Pion emission in 2H, 12C, 27Al, gamma pi+ reactions at threshold
The first data from MAX-lab in Lund, Sweden on pion production in
photonuclear reactions at threshold energies, is presented. The decrease of the
total yield of pi+ in gamma + 12C, 27Al reactions below 200 MeV as well as
differential, dsigma/dOmega, cross sections follow essentially predictions from
an intranuclear cascade model with an attractive potential for pion-nucleus
interaction in its simplest form. Double differential, d2sigma/dOmegadT, cross
sections at 176 MeV show, however, deviations from the model, which call for
refinements of nuclear and Coulomb potentials and possibly also for coherent
pion production mechanisms.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figure
Elucidating Individual Magnetic Contributions in Bi-Magnetic Fe3O4/Mn3O4 Core/Shell Nanoparticles by Polarized Powder Neutron Diffraction
Heterogeneous bi-magnetic nanostructured systems have had a sustained interest during the last decades owing to their unique magnetic properties and the wide range of derived potential applications. However, elucidating the details of their magnetic properties can be rather complex. Here, a comprehensive study of Fe3O4/Mn3O4 core/shell nanoparticles using polarized neutron powder diffraction, which allows disentangling the magnetic contributions of each of the components, is presented. The results show that while at low fields the Fe3O4 and Mn3O4 magnetic moments averaged over the unit cell are antiferromagnetically coupled, at high fields, they orient parallel to each other. This magnetic reorientation of the Mn3O4 shell moments is associated with a gradual evolution with the applied field of the local magnetic susceptibility from anisotropic to isotropic. Additionally, the magnetic coherence length of the Fe3O4 cores shows some unusual field dependence due to the competition between the antiferromagnetic interface interaction and the Zeeman energies. The results demonstrate the great potential of the quantitative analysis of polarized neutron powder diffraction for the study of complex multiphase magnetic materials
Isovector soft dipole mode in 6Be
By using the 1H(6Li,6Be)n charge-exchange reaction, continuum states in 6Be
were populated up to E_t=16 MeV, E_t being the 6Be energy above its three-body
decay threshold. In kinematically complete measurements performed by detecting
alpha+p+p coincidences, an E_t spectrum of high statistics was obtained,
containing approximately ~5x10^6 events. The spectrum provides detailed
correlation information about the well-known 0^+ ground state of 6Be at
E_t=1.37 MeV and its 2^+ state at E_t=3.05 MeV. Moreover, a broad structure
extending from 4 to 16 MeV was observed. It contains negative parity states
populated by Delta L=1 angular momentum transfer without other significant
contributions. This structure can be interpreted as a novel phenomenon, i.e.
the isovector soft dipole mode associated with the 6Li ground state. The
population of this mode in the charge-exchange reaction is a dominant
phenomenon for this reaction, being responsible for about 60% of the cross
section obtained in the measured energy range.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

Dynamic scaling and aging phenomena in short-range Ising spin glass: CuCoCl-FeCl graphite bi-intercalation compound
Static and dynamic behavior of short-range Ising-spin glass
CuCoCl-FeCl graphite bi-intercalation compounds
(GBIC) has been studied with SQUID DC and AC magnetic susceptibility. The
dependence of the zero-field relaxation time above a spin-freezing
temperature (= 3.92 0.11 K) is well described by critical slowing
down. The absorption below decreases with
increasing angular frequency , which is in contrast to the case of 3D
Ising spin glass. The dynamic freezing temperature at which
dd, is determined as a function of
frequency (0.01 Hz 1 kHz) and magnetic field (0 5 kOe). The dynamic scaling analysis of the relaxation time
defined as at suggests the absence of
SG phase in the presence of (at least above 100 Oe). Dynamic scaling
analysis of and near
leads to the critical exponents ( = 0.36 0.03, = 3.5
0.4, = 1.4 0.2, = 6.6 1.2, = 0.24
0.02, and = 0.13 0.02). The aging phenomenon is studied through
the absorption below . It obeys a
power-law decay with an exponent . The rejuvenation effect is also observed under
sufficiently large (temperature and magnetic-field) perturbations.Comment: 14 pages, 19 figures; to be published in Phys. Rev. B (September 1,

Electromigration-Induced Flow of Islands and Voids on the Cu(001) Surface
Electromigration-induced flow of islands and voids on the Cu(001) surface is
studied at the atomic scale. The basic drift mechanisms are identified using a
complete set of energy barriers for adatom hopping on the Cu(001) surface,
combined with kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. The energy barriers are
calculated by the embedded atom method, and parameterized using a simple model.
The dependence of the flow on the temperature, the size of the clusters, and
the strength of the applied field is obtained. For both islands and voids it is
found that edge diffusion is the dominant mass-transport mechanism. The rate
limiting steps are identified. For both islands and voids they involve
detachment of atoms from corners into the adjacent edge. The energy barriers
for these moves are found to be in good agreement with the activation energy
for island/void drift obtained from Arrhenius analysis of the simulation
results. The relevance of the results to other FCC(001) metal surfaces and
their experimental implications are discussed.Comment: 9 pages, 13 ps figure

OBJECTIVE— Variants downstream of the melanocortin-4 receptor gene (MC4R) have been reported to associate with obesity. We examined rs17782313, rs17700633, rs12970134, rs477181, rs502933, and rs4450508 near MC4R for association with obesity-related quantitative traits, obesity, and type 2 diabetes in Danish individuals
Probing the high momentum component of the deuteron at high Q^2
The d(e,e'p) cross section at a momentum transfer of 3.5 (GeV/c)^2 was
measured over a kinematical range that made it possible to study this reaction
for a set of fixed missing momenta as a function of the neutron recoil angle
theta_nq and to extract missing momentum distributions for fixed values of
theta_nq up to 0.55 GeV/c. In the region of 35 (deg) <= theta_nq <= 45 (deg)
recent calculations, which predict that final state interactions are small,
agree reasonably well with the experimental data. Therefore these experimental
reduced cross sections provide direct access to the high momentum component of
the deuteron momentum distribution in exclusive deuteron
electro-disintegration.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Light propagation in statistically homogeneous and isotropic universes with general matter content
We derive the relationship of the redshift and the angular diameter distance
to the average expansion rate for universes which are statistically homogeneous
and isotropic and where the distribution evolves slowly, but which have
otherwise arbitrary geometry and matter content. The relevant average expansion
rate is selected by the observable redshift and the assumed symmetry properties
of the spacetime. We show why light deflection and shear remain small. We write
down the evolution equations for the average expansion rate and discuss the
validity of the dust approximation.Comment: 42 pages, no figures. v2: Corrected one detail about the angular
diameter distance and two typos. No change in result
