    Universality of residence-time distributions in non-adiabatic stochastic resonance

    We present mathematically rigorous expressions for the residence-time and first-passage-time distributions of a periodically forced Brownian particle in a bistable potential. For a broad range of forcing frequencies and amplitudes, the distributions are close to periodically modulated exponential ones. Remarkably, the periodic modulations are governed by universal functions, depending on a single parameter related to the forcing period.     Thermopower as a Possible Probe of Non-Abelian Quasiparticle Statistics in Fractional Quantum Hall Liquids

    We show in this paper that thermopower is enhanced in non-Abelian quantum Hall liquids under appropriate conditions. This is because thermopower measures entropy per electron in the clean limit, while the degeneracy and entropy associated with non-Abelian quasiparticles enhance entropy when they are present. Thus thermopower can potentially probe non-Abelian nature of the quasiparticles, and measure their quantum dimension.Comment: 5 pages. Minor revisions in response to referee comments.     Overcoming entrenched disagreements. the case of misoprostol for post-partum haemorrhage.

    The debate about whether misoprostol should be distributed to low resource communities to prevent post-partum haemorrhage (PPH), recognised as a major cause of maternal mortality, is deeply polarised. This is in spite of stakeholders having access to the same evidence about the risks and benefits of misoprostol. To understand the disagreement, we conducted a qualitative analysis of the values underpinning debates surrounding community distribution of misoprostol. We found that different moral priorities, epistemic values, and attitudes towards uncertainty were the main factors sustaining the debate. With this understanding, we present a model for ethical discourse that might overcome the current impasse

    Knowledge needs and use in long‐term care homes for older people: A qualitative interview study of managers’ views

Available on open access from Wiley via the DOI in this record. We explore the views of managers' knowledge needs and use to optimise care practices and enhance the life experience for older people living, and staff working, in long‐term care homes (with and without nursing). This paper contributes to previous research by offering insights into the knowledge types drawn upon and used by managers to inform efforts to better support gaining and mobilising knowledge. Using a pragmatic qualitative approach, we undertook 19 semi‐structured interviews with managers and leaders in 15 care homes in the South West of England, varying in geographical location, size and type of ownership. We did a thematic analysis of the data using Framework Analysis. Our interpretations were informed by the existing literature on knowledge types. We identified three themes from our analysis as to managers’ knowledge needs and use when implementing changes. First, views about training and formal reports or “explicit knowledge” consisting of the two sub‐themes “gaining explicit knowledge” and “research knowledge”. Second, perspectives relating to practical experience or “tacit knowledge” and judging the use of knowledge in particular cases or “phronesis”. Third, the role of emotion in managers’ knowledge needs and use. We found that having knowledge was positively valued by managers and leaders for improving care practices and enhancing the lives of people residing in care homes. Tacit knowledge and phronesis were particularly highly valued and we note challenges with the perceived applicability, relevance and use of research evidence. We identify that emotions are an important component within knowledge use and a need to further understand how to support the emotional wellbeing of managers so they can support care staff and residents.     Observable and hidden singular features of large fluctuations in nonequilibrium systems

    We study local features, and provide a topological insight into the global structure of the probability density distribution and of the pattern of the optimal paths for large rare fluctuations away from a stable state. In contrast to extremal paths in quantum mechanics, the optimal paths do {\it not} encounter caustics. We show how this occurs, and what, instead of caustics, are the experimentally observable singularities of the pattern.     Lattice congruences of the weak order

    We study the congruence lattice of the poset of regions of a hyperplane arrangement, with particular emphasis on the weak order on a finite Coxeter group. Our starting point is a theorem from a previous paper which gives a geometric description of the poset of join-irreducibles of the congruence lattice of the poset of regions in terms of certain polyhedral decompositions of the hyperplanes. For a finite Coxeter system (W,S) and a subset K of S, let \eta_K:w \mapsto w_K be the projection onto the parabolic subgroup W_K. We show that the fibers of \eta_K constitute the smallest lattice congruence with 1\equiv s for every s\in(S-K). We give an algorithm for determining the congruence lattice of the weak order for any finite Coxeter group and for a finite Coxeter group of type A or B we define a directed graph on subsets or signed subsets such that the transitive closure of the directed graph is the poset of join-irreducibles of the congruence lattice of the weak order.Comment: 26 pages, 4 figure

    Atomic Spectral Features During Thermonuclear Flashes on Neutron Stars

    The gravitational redshift measured by Cottam, Paerels and Mendez for the neutron star (NS) in the low-mass X-ray binary EXO 0748-676 depends on the identification of an absorption line during a type I burst as the Hα\alpha line from hydrogenic Fe. We show that Fe is present above the photosphere as long as M˙>4×10−13M⊙yr−1\dot M>4\times 10^{-13}M_\odot {\rm yr^{-1}} during the burst. In this limit, the total Fe column is NFe≈3×1019cm−2N_{\rm Fe}\approx 3\times 10^{19}{\rm cm^{-2}} for incident material of solar abundances and only depends on the nuclear physics of the proton spallation. The Fe destruction creates many heavy elements with Z<26Z<26 which may imprint photo-ionization edges on the NS spectra during a radius expansion event or in a burst cooling tail. Detecting these features in concert with those from Fe would confirm a redshift measurement. We also begin to address the radiative transfer problem, and find that a concentrated Fe layer with kT=1.2−1.4keVkT=1.2-1.4 {\rm keV} and column NFe=7−20×1020cm−2N_{\rm Fe}= 7-20 \times 10^{20} {\rm cm}^{-2} (depending on the line depth) above the hotter continuum photosphere is required to create the Hα\alpha line of the observed strength. This estimate must be refined by considerations of non-LTE effects as well as resonant line transport. Until these are carried out, we cannot say whether the Fe column from accretion and spallation is in conflict with the observations. We also show that hydrogenic Fe might remain in the photosphere due to radiative levitation from the high burst flux.Comment: Substantially revised version, to appear in Ap J Letter

    Possible Association of APOE Genotype with Working Memory in Young Adults

    Possession of the Δ4 allele of the Apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene is associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. Early adult life effects of Δ4 are less well understood. Working memory has been relatively little studied (compared to episodic memory) in relation to APOE genotype despite its importance in cognitive functioning. Our hypothesis was that Δ4 would lead to an impairment in working memory in young adults.We studied working memory using a computerised n-back task in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) at age 18. Data was available for 1049-1927 participants and for the 2- and 3-back versions of the task. Using multiple and multi-level regression controlling for important confounders we examined the association between APOE genotype on accuracy and reaction times.There was no evidence of a genotype effect on accuracy when the two difficulty levels were examined separately. There was some evidence to support a deleterious effect of the Δ4 allele on n-back accuracy in the multi-level regression. There was weak evidence that the Δ22 group were less accurate but the numbers were very low in this group. The Δ34 group had faster reaction times than the reference Δ33 group in all adjusted analyses but the Δ44 group were only faster in the 3-back condition in multi-level analyses.There was no evidence of benefit in Δ4 carriers, but there was some evidence of a detrimental effect on working memory in this large study
