    Threshold voltage and space charge in organic transistors

    We investigate rubrene single-crystal field-effect transistors, whose stability and reproducibility are sufficient to measure systematically the shift in threshold voltage as a function of channel length and source-drain voltage. The shift is due to space-charge transferred from the contacts, and can be modeled quantitatively without free fitting parameters, using Poisson's equation, and by assuming that the density of states in rubrene is that of a conventional inorganic semiconductor. Our results demonstrate the consistency, at the quantitative level, of a variety of recent experiments on rubrene crystals, and show how the use of FET measurements can enable the determination of microscopic parameters (e.g., the effective mass of charge carriers).Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Quantitative analysis of electronic transport through weakly-coupled metal/organic interfaces

    Using single-crystal transistors, we have performed a systematic experimental study of electronic transport through oxidized copper/rubrene interfaces as a function of temperature and bias. We find that the measurements can be reproduced quantitatively in terms of the thermionic emission theory for Schottky diodes, if the effect of the bias-induced barrier lowering is included. Our analysis emphasizes the role of the coupling between metal and molecules, which in our devices is weak due to the presence of an oxide layer at the surface of the copper electrodes.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Structural Transformations in the Thermal Dehydration of [Cu<sub>2</sub>(bpa)(btec)(H<sub>2</sub>O)<sub>4</sub>]<sub>n</sub> Coordination Polymer

    Reactions between pyridinic ligands such as 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpa) and transition metal cations are a very widespread technique to produce extended coordination polymers such as Metal-Organic Frameworks. In combination with a second ligand these systems could present different topologies and behaviors. In this context, the use of 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid (H4btec) gave us a novel 2D compound, [Cu2(bpa)(btec)(H2O)4]n (1), which was prepared by microwave-assisted synthesis and structurally characterized by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction. Its thermal behavior was analyzed through thermogravimetric analysis and variable temperature powder X-ray diffraction, concluding that thermal stability is influenced by the coordination water molecules, allowing two sequential thermochromic phase transformations to take place. These transformations were monitored by electronic paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements. In addition, the crystal structure of the anhydrous compound [Cu2(bpa)(btec)]n (1.ah) was determined. Finally, a topological study was carried out for the bpa ligand considering all the structures deposited in the Cambridge Structural Databased. More than 1000 structures were analyzed and classified into 17 different topologies, according to the role of the ligand

    Design of van der Waals interfaces for broad-spectrum optoelectronics

    Van der Waals (vdW) interfaces based on 2D materials are promising for optoelectronics, as interlayer transitions between different compounds allow tailoring of the spectral response over a broad range. However, issues such as lattice mismatch or a small misalignment of the constituent layers can drastically suppress electron–photon coupling for these interlayer transitions. Here, we engineered type-II interfaces by assembling atomically thin crystals that have the bottom of the conduction band and the top of the valence band at the Γ point, and thus avoid any momentum mismatch. We found that these van der Waals interfaces exhibit radiative optical transitions irrespective of the lattice constant, the rotational and/or translational alignment of the two layers or whether the constituent materials are direct or indirect gap semiconductors. Being robust and of general validity, our results broaden the scope of future optoelectronics device applications based on two-dimensional materials

    Bacillus thuringiensis isolates entomopathogenic for Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) and Anticarsia gemmatalis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

    Samples of the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) were collected from soil and insects. Eight isolates were selected from rural soil, 15 from urban soil and 11 from insects. These were evaluated for entomopathogenicity against larvae of Anticarsia gemmatalis and Culex quinquefasciatus. The pathogenicity tests showed that a higher percentage of isolates were active against A. gemmatalis (60%) compared to C. quinquefasciatus (31%). Probit analysis (LC50) indicated that against A. gemmatalis four of the isolates presented values similar to the reference strain against A. gemmatalis, while against C. quinquefasciatus one isolate showed an LC50 similar to the reference strain (IPS-82). SDS-PAGE characterisation of two isolates showed a 27 kDa protein fraction related to the Bt subspecies israelensis cytolytic toxin (cyt) gene. One 130 kDa protein, possibly related to the Bt crystal inclusions (cry1) gene, was identified in the other two isolates, which were more toxic for lepidoptera; another isolate presented a protein of 100 kDa. Some new local Bt isolates had similar LC50 probit values to the reference strains
