Reproductive aspects of the rose shrimp Parapenaeus longirostris (Lucas, 1846) in the Gulf of Cadiz (southwestern Iberian Peninsula)
Parapenaeus longirostris (Lucas, 1846) is an abundant penaeid species which inhabits the Eastern Atlantic, from Portugal to Angola, and the Mediterranean Sea. This species is of great interest to fishermen in the Spanish waters of the Gulf of Cadiz. The study on the reproductive cycle of P. longirostris was based on the analysis of monthly commercial samples and fisheries research surveys carried out in this region. The species shows two spawning peaks throughout the year, the first peak occurring in late spring and the second one in the autumn. The bigger mature females mainly perform spring spawnings, whereas adult females of smaller size perform autumn spawnings. Females at first maturity were between 21.5 and 22 mm CL. In males the joining of the two pieces of the petasma takes place between 12 and 15 mm CL., being always separated at sizes lower than 11 mm CL. The size at which the 50 % of males have a joint pestama was estimated at 12.9 mm CL. The spermatophoric mass on the coxae of the fifth pereiopods were present from a size of 13 mm CL., the size at first maturity being estimated at 14.8 mm CL. The condition factor is related more to grow events than to ovarian maturation, there is an existing relationship between them. The relative fecundity was estimated at 7,486 eggs per gramme of female, the fecundity ranging between 21,410 and 186,856 eggs. Females at the stage of both advanced ovarian development and readiness to spawn occurred in depths greater than 100

First high-resolution multi-proxy palaeoenvironmental record of the Late Glacial to Early Holocene transition in the RÃa de Arousa (Atlantic margin of NW Iberia)
A 322-cm-long sedimentary sequence obtained in the shallow marine basin of the RÃa de Arousa—a submerged unglaciated river valley on the Atlantic margin of northwestern Iberia—was analysed using a multi-proxy approach to study how climatic and sea level changes affected the coastal ecosystems during the Last Glacial–Interglacial Transition. Past sedimentation, vegetation and marine productivities were inferred from palynological, radiocarbon, seismic and lithological data. A substantial reduction in the pollen and dinoflagellate cyst accumulation rates is observed at ∼12,700 to 11,700 cal a BP, suggesting lower marine and vegetation productivities likely as a response to the Younger Dryas cooling event. Overall, the regional vegetation changed from cold-tolerant open woodlands (Pinus sylvestris/P. nigra and Betula) dominating before ∼10,200 cal a BP to coastal wetlands and the regional spread of Quercus-dominated forests after ∼9800 cal a BP. Cluster analysis and principal component analysis allowed the identification of several small environmental oscillations, such as the 11.4 ka and 10.5 ka cooling events. After that, a conspicuous heath expansion was likely favoured by the palaeotopography, the increased precipitation and the relative sea level rise, which might have caused a profound change in the coastal configuration. Concurrently, both the dinoflagellate cyst and non-pollen palynomorph records reveal variations in the marine productivity and coastal hydrodynamics that also agree with a period of marked marine transgression, warming and increasing river flow. New sedimentary data highlight the high sensitivity of the ria's ecosystems to environmental oscillations and show a close temporal correspondence between terrestrial and marine responses to climate change
Numerical simulation of a 3-D gas-solid fluidized bed: Comparison of TFM and CPFD numerical approaches and experimental validation
This paper presents the results of a 3-D numerical simulation of a freely bubbling fluidized bed, based on the Eulerian¿Lagrangian approach, using the software Barracuda (CPFD-Barracuda). The main results obtained were assessed in terms of frequency analysis, bubble pierced length, bubble size, bubble passage frequency and bubble velocity. The results obtained were also compared with experimental data obtained in a 3-D fluidized bed using pressure and optical probes, and with the numerical results using the more common Eulerian-Eulerian approach, implemented in the commercial software Fluent (TFM-Fluent). The results show that CPFD-Barracuda satisfactorily predicts the global behaviour of bubbling beds with a low computational cost, although it computes smaller bubble sizes and lower bubble velocities than TFM-Fluent and experiments. Additionally, the spectra of pressure and particle volume fraction obtained with CPFD-Barracuda resemble those from the experiments and the TFM-Fluent simulations, but with a larger contribution of lower frequencies. The peaks of the pressure spectra from CPFD-Barracuda are close to those from the experiments and the TFM-Fluent simulations, whereas those in the solid volume spectra seem to be underestimated by CPFD-Barracuda. The results also indicate that the particle fraction threshold value chosen to distinguish bubbles contours notably influences the results of the bubble characteristics, especially for TFM-Fluent, whereas CPFD-Barracuda is less sensitive to this threshold value. This work was partially funded by the Ministerio de EconomÃa y
