    Optical spectroscopy of rare-earth ions doped KY(WO4)2 thin films

    KY(WO4)2 thin films doped with Dy3+, Tb3+, Yb3+, were grown onto KY(WO4)2 substrates using liquid-phase epitaxy. Spectroscopic investigations of the grown layers were performed. Obtained results were compared with spectra given for bulk crystals. Upconversion experiments after direct Yb3+ excitation in Dy3+-Yb3+ and Tb3+-Yb3+ codoped layers will be also presented

    Organic vs Conventional Suckling Lamb Production: Product Quality and Consumer Acceptance

    Samples of suckling lambs (n=40) of two breeds reared under conventional and organic conditions were analysed to asses physico-chemical characteristics, including instrumental texture, and nutritional quality in terms of fatty acid composition. Consumer acceptance was also studied using the home-use test. Results revealed that organic suckling lamb meat is healthier as shown by the lower saturated fatty acid levels, the higher polyunsaturated fatty acid contents and the higher 6/3 ratiko. The organic meat had lower instrumental hardness, received higher scores in all sensory parameters, and had statistically better fat sensation and higher ratings for overall liking. These results lend support to the notion among consumers that organic products are healthier and tastier

    Consumer Appreciation of Carcass Quality of Organic vs Conventional Suckling Lamb Production

    Carcass characteristics of sucking lambs (n= 40) of two breeds reared under conventional and organic conditions were analysed including objective and subjective parameters for fatness and conformation, meat and fat colour. Consumer acceptance was also studied using the home-use test. Results showed that the characteristics of the carcass of suckling lamb were similar for both types of production systems pointing out that organic production system did not affect fatness or muscle development. However, organic meat was darker (higher L* and a* values) probably related with the higher amount of exercise, although fat was not more yellow. In contrast consumers did not consider organic meat darker and there were not significant differences in appearance related with the similar conformation. These results reflect that consumer perceive organic meat as at least as good as conventional production not only regarding environmental quality but also regarding carcass quality

    [esp] La villa romana Romeral ha sido objeto de diversas intervenciones arqueológicas: de forma discontinua, entre 1961-1968, con la intención de proteger y recuperar una parte de sus mosaicos; de forma regular, en el marco de un programa global de investigación, a partir de 1995. Las excavaciones han permitido identificar un gran establecimiento y definir sus principales fases de ocupación, entre los siglos I y V d.C. La fase más importante corresponde al siglo IV, cuando el edificio se reorganiza totalmente en torno a un peristilo, utilizando los programas arquitectónicos y decorativos propios de las grandes residencias de la aristocracia de la antigüedad tardía.     Developmental gene network analysis

    The developmental process is controlled by the information processing functions executed by the cis-elements that regulate the expression of the participating genes. A model of the network of cis-regulatory interactions that underlies the specification of the endomesoderm of the sea urchin embryo is analyzed here. Although not all the relevant interactions have yet been uncovered, the model shows how the information processing functions executed by the cis-regulatory elements involved can control essential functions of the specification process, such as transforming the localization of maternal factors into a domain-specific program of gene expression; refining the specification pattern; and stabilizing states of specification. The analysis suggests that the progressivity of the developmental process is also controlled by the cis-regulatory interactions unraveled by the network model. Given that evolution occurs by changing the program for development of the body plan, we illustrate the potential of developmental gene network analysis in understanding the process by which morphological features are maintained and diversify. Comparison of the network of cis-regulatory interactions with a portion of that underlying the specification of the endomesoderm of the starfish illustrates how the similarities and differences provide insights into how the programs for development work and how they evolve

    El propósito de esta investigación fue analizar la relación entre la evolución de la velocidad media (Velmedia) y los valores de la escala OMNI-RES, en 3 intensidades (carga Inicial [CI], máxima potencia [MP] y repetición máxima [RM]). 38 sujetos divididos en dos grupos: Entrenados (G1, n = 19) y No Entrenados (G2, n = 19) realizaron un test incremental de cargas en el ejercicio del press de banca. En la percepción subjetiva del esfuerzo (RPE) no se encontraron diferencias significativas entre ambos grupos. El análisis de la Velmedia mostró diferencias significativas tanto en la MP como en la RM. La OMNI-RES es un buen método para cuantificar la intensidad en el ejercicio del press de banca, aunque sería aconsejable acompañar este valor con otra medida de intensidad como la Velmedia. De esta forma, se podría ajustar mejor la intensidad real realizada en las diferentes series de entrenamient

    Performance evaluation of two slow-medium growing chicken strains maintained under organic production system during different seasons

    A total of 160 1-day-old medium-growing male chicks (Gallus gallus domesticus) were raised for 120 days in a certified organic farming system. A total of two strains were studied (Coloryield, CY; RedBro, RB). Overall, two weather periods were considered based on the outdoor temperature, being S1 colder than S2. In total, 40 chicks per strain were assigned to each period (n = 80). Chickens were fed ad libitum with the same organic feeds. In the first month, chickens were kept indoors and, from day 30, they had access to the pasture. Slaughter live weight (LW), average daily gains, (ADG), the feed conversion ratio (FCR), and mortality rates did not differ between the two strains. LW was (p < 0.05) higher in the S1 and a trend (p = 0.084) was observed for ADG, which was higher in S1. No differences were found for feed intake, FCR, and mortality rates between weather periods. There were no differences for coefficient of variation (CV) between the strains studied, nevertheless, CV for LW in S2 was increased. Differences in the productive performance between these strains raised in organic production systems were slight. However, chickens raised in S1 had a better performance.
