    Empowering Children to Learn: An Exploratory Study Using a Philosophical Listening Tool (the Little Box of Big Questions 2)

    A key function of educational psychologists is to promote empowering and cultivating learning environments that prepare children and young people for the twenty-first century. This study explores how children may be empowered to learn through the clarification of their daily lived experiences. Learning experiences are examined from the perspective of the children themselves, with a particular emphasis on metaphysical concepts. A listening tool was used to gather data: in-depth stories, experiences, motivations and beliefs about individual learning. Thematic analysis was applied to interviews, further promoting the ‘voice of the child’ and illuminating how children think about their own learning. Autonomy, experience and purpose are examined in the context of how children learn. This research aims to contribute towards the growing body of knowledge about how children learn. The findings may help to inform the work of educational psychologists and enhance the educational experiences of children and young people

    A Preliminary Study on Using the “Little Box of Big Questions (2012)” for Children With Social, Emotional, Behavioural and Moderate Learning Needs

    Listening to children is comprehensively acclaimed and embedded in Educational Psychology practice and moral, pragmatic and legal perspectives, and professional guidance exist to enforce this practice. Whilst a variety of tools have been explored for listening to children using various techniques, research is yet to focus on using philosophical/spiritual listening approaches with children with special educational needs. This paper targets this specific area by exploring the experiences and impact of using a spiritual listening tool, The Little Box of Big Questions (2012), and follow-up questions to enable reflection opportunities. Data was collected over four sessions with four children aged 13 to 14 with social, emotional, behavioural and moderate learning needs who attended a specialist school for moderate learning needs. Semi-structured interviews, alongside a teacher focus group, informed the thematic analysis, with findings suggesting that relationships, education and feelings about themselves and others not only play a role in students’ lives but are also areas of perceived improvements following the sessions. Implications for educational psychologists were discussed, including a greater understanding of the use and impact of The Little Box of Big Questions with children with special educational needs to elicit aspirations, enable goal setting and motivate change

    Listening to Children and Young People’s (CYP) Experience and Perceptions During the Period of COVID-19 and Their Advice for Teachers and Schools

    This research project aimed to elicit the views of children and young people (CYP) about their experience of COVID-19, and their advice to teachers and schools. The views of fourteen CYP aged between 9 and 15 years of age from within and around London were ascertained through individual semi-structured interviews and analysed through thematic analysis. There were a variety of responses from CYP, including the following: a deep appreciation for their teachers and their support throughout the pandemic; stories of positive personal growth and spending more time with their family. However, their inability to see friends and the challenges of learning from home had a considerable impact on some CYP who would have liked home learning to have been more personalised, interactive and varied and for there to have been a greater awareness of workload. A list of issues for consideration and a checklist based upon the CYP’s views have been compiled, for the use of schools and teachers. Given the small sample, the timing of the study and the fact that the pandemic is ongoing, some suggestions for further research are indicated

    We exploit a relationship between the Structure Functions of nucleons, the physical deuteron and of a deuteron, composed of point-nucleons to compute angular distributions of inclusive cross sections of 4.05 GeV electrons. We report general agreement with data and interpret the remaining discrepancies.     Inclusive quasi-elastic electron-nucleus scattering

    This article presents a review of the field of inclusive quasi-elastic electron-nucleus scattering. It discusses the approach used to measure the data and includes a compilation of data available in numerical form. The theoretical approaches used to interpret the data are presented. A number of results obtained from the comparison between experiment and calculation are then reviewed. New level sequences with positive and negative parities have been identified from n-γγ and n-γγγ coincidences. Spins have been assigned to many of the levels on the basis of angular distribution and directional correlation measurements. Excitation energies of the positive-parity yrast band and the branching ratios of its decay are compared with the predictions of the rigid triaxial rotor plus particle model. ©2004 The American Physical SocietyA.     Four-quasiparticle alignments in 66Ge

    13 págs.; 7 figs.; 1 tab. ; PACS number(s): 23.20.Lv, 21.10.Re, 25.70.Hi, 27.50.1eThe neutron-deficient nucleus 66Ge was populated at high spin in two experiments using the reaction 40Ca(32S, α2p) at beam energies of 105 and 95 MeV. In the first experiment, a self-supporting 40Ca target was used, while a gold-backed target of similar thickness was used in the second experiment, γ rays were detected with the EUROBALL array, combined with the charged-particle detector array EUCLIDES and the Neutron Wall. The level scheme of 66Ge was extended up to E ≈ 18 MeV and Iπ = (23-). Above angular momentum 10+, we found two sequences, connected by energetically staggered ΔI = 1 M 1 transitions. The total Routhian surface calculations describe 66Ge at lower spins as a γ-soft nucleus having a moderate deformation of β2 ≈ 0.23, while a triaxial deformation is predicted for the band structures above Iπ = 10+.     Pairing in the iron arsenides: a functional RG treatment

    We study the phase diagram of a microscopic model for the superconducting iron arsenides by means of a functional renormalization group. Our treatment establishes a connection between a strongly simplified two-patch model by Chubukov et al. and a five-band- analysis by Wang et al.. For a wide parameter range, the dominant pairing instability occurs in the extended s-wave channel. The results clearly show the relevance of pair scattering between electron and hole pockets. We also give arguments that the phase transition between the antiferromagnetic phase for the undoped system and the superconducting phase may be first order

    High-momentum dynamic structure function of liquid 3He-4He mixtures: a microscopic approach

    The high-momentum dynamic structure function of liquid 3He-4He mixtures has been studied introducing final state effects. Corrections to the impulse approximation have been included using a generalized Gersch-Rodriguez theory that properly takes into account the Fermi statistics of 3He atoms. The microscopic inputs, as the momentum distributions and the two-body density matrices, correspond to a variational (fermi)-hypernetted chain calculation. The agreement with experimental data obtained at q=23.1q=23.1 \AA1^{-1} is not completely satisfactory, the comparison being difficult due to inconsistencies present in the scattering measurements. The significant differences between the experimental determinations of the 4He condensate fraction and the 3He kinetic energy, and the theoretical results, still remain unsolved.Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, to appear in Phys.     GRS computation of deep inelastic electron scattering on 4He

    We compute cross sections for inclusive scattering of high energy electrons on 4He, based on the two lowest orders of the Gersch-Rodriguez-Smith (GRS) series. The required one- and two-particle density matrices are obtained from non-relativistic 4He wave functions using realistic models for the nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon interaction. Predictions for E=3.6 GeV agree well with the NE3 SLAC-Virginia data.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, submitted to PR
