Automatic Dimension Selection for a Non-negative Factorization Approach to Clustering Multiple Random Graphs
We consider a problem of grouping multiple graphs into several clusters using
singular value thesholding and non-negative factorization. We derive a model
selection information criterion to estimate the number of clusters. We
demonstrate our approach using "Swimmer data set" as well as simulated data

User involvement in regulation: A qualitative study of service user involvement in Care Quality Commission inspections of health and social care providers in England
Background High profile failures of care in the NHS have raised concerns about regulatory systems for health‐care professionals and organizations. In response, the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the regulator of health and social care in England overhauled its regulatory regime. It moved to inspections which made much greater use of expert knowledge, data and views from a range of stakeholders, including service users. Objective We explore the role of service users and citizens in health and social care regulation, including how CQC involved people in inspecting and rating health and social care providers. Design We analyse CQC reports and documents, and 61 interviews with CQC staff and representatives of groups of service users and citizens and voluntary sector organizations to explore the place of service user voice in regulatory processes. Results Care Quality Commission invited comments and facilitated the sharing of existing service user experiences and engaged with representatives of groups of service users and voluntary sector organizations. CQC involved service users in their inspections as “experts by experience.” Information from service users informed both the inspection regime and individual inspections, but CQC was less focused on giving feedback to service users who contributed to these activities. Discussion and conclusions Service users can make an important contribution to regulation by sharing their experiences and having their voices heard, but their involvement was somewhat transactional, and largely on terms set by CQC. There may be scope for CQC to build more enduring relationships with service user groups and to engage them more effectively in the regulatory regime

They allow the simulator access to an expanded range of simulation parameters like viscosity, viscosity contrast and interfacial tensions, and to obtain data with low levels of interfacial micro-current activity in the region of the dynamic contact line
Near wall hemodynamics: Modelling the glycocalyx and the endothelial surface

Blood is modelled as a two-component incompressible fluid: the plasma and corpuscular elements dispersed in it. The latter are modelled as deformable liquid droplets having greater density and viscosity. Interfacial surface tension and membrane effects are present to mimic key properties and to avoid droplets’ coalescence. The mesoscopic model also includes the presence of the wavy wall, due to the endothelial cells and incorporates a representation of the glycocalyx, covering the vessel wall. The glycocalyx is modelled as a porous medium, the droplets being subjected to a repulsive elastic force when approaching it, during their transit. Preliminary simulations are intended to show the influence of the undulation on the wall together with that of the glycocalyx
Sexual orientation and symptoms of common mental disorder or low wellbeing: combined meta-analysis of 12 UK population health surveys
Background Previous studies have indicated increased risk of mental disorder symptoms, suicide and substance misuse in lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) adults, compared to heterosexual adults. Our aims were to determine an estimate of the association between sexual orientation identity and poor mental health and wellbeing among adults from 12 population surveys in the UK, and to consider whether effects differed for specific subgroups of the population. Methods Individual data were pooled from the British Cohort Study 2012, Health Survey for England 2011, 2012 and 2013, Scottish Health Survey 2008 to 2013, Longitudinal Study of Young People in England 2009/10 and Understanding Society 2011/12. Individual participant meta-analysis was used to pool estimates from each study, allowing for between-study variation. Results Of 94,818 participants, 1.1 % identified as lesbian/gay, 0.9 % as bisexual, 0.8 % as ‘other’ and 97.2 % as heterosexual. Adjusting for a range of covariates, adults who identified as lesbian/gay had higher prevalence of common mental disorder when compared to heterosexuals, but the association was different in different age groups: apparent for those under 35 (OR = 1.78, 95 % CI 1.40, 2.26), weaker at age 35–54.9 (OR = 1.42, 95 % CI 1.10, 1.84), but strongest at age 55+ (OR = 2.06, 95 % CI 1.29, 3.31). These effects were stronger for bisexual adults, similar for those identifying as ‘other’, and similar for 'low wellbeing'. Conclusions In the UK, LGB adults have higher prevalence of poor mental health and low wellbeing when compared to heterosexuals, particularly younger and older LGB adults. Sexual orientation identity should be measured routinely in all health studies and in administrative data in the UK in order to influence national and local policy development and service delivery. These results reiterate the need for local government, NHS providers and public health policy makers to consider how to address inequalities in mental health among these minority groups
Numerical Solution of a Complete Formulation of Flow in a Perfusion Bone-Tissue Bioreactor Using Lattice Boltzmann Equation Method
We report the key findings from numerical solutions of a model of transport
within an established perfusion bioreactor design. The model includes a
complete formulation of transport with fully coupled convection-diffusion and
scaffold cell attachment. It also includes the experimentally determined
internal (Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA)) scaffold boundary, together with the
external vessel and flow-port boundaries. Our findings, obtained using parallel
lattice Boltzmann equation method, relate to (i) whole-device, steady-state
flow and species distribution and (ii) the properties of the scaffold. In
particular the results identify which elements of the problem may be addressed
by coarse grained methods such as the Darcy approximation and those which
require a more complete description. The work demonstrates that appropriate
numerical modelling will make a key contribution to the design and development
of large scale bioreactors.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Multi-scale interaction of flow and the artery wall
We discuss, from the perspective of basic science, the physical and biological processes which underlie atherosclerotic (plaque) initiation at the vascular endothelium, identifying their widely separated spatial and temporal scales which participate. We draw on current, related models of vessel wall evolution, paying particular attention to the role of flow, and proceed to propose, then validate (in practical, qualitative terms, at least) a multiply coupled, multi-scale modeling strategy, which, eventually, aims at a quantitative, patient-specific understanding of the coupling between the flow and the endothelial state
Utilising implementation intentions to promote healthy eating in adolescents
Objectives: This study evaluated a school-based behaviour change intervention for adolescents to address unhealthy eating habits that may otherwise “track” into adulthood. Design: A behaviour change intervention was conducted utilising implementation intention formation (or if-then planning) for adolescents to achieve two healthy eating goals: (1) including fruit and vegetable in each daily meal, and (2) replacing unhealthy snacks with healthy choices. Methods: Participants (N = 107) aged between 16 and 18 years were randomised to intervention, active control and passive control conditions. Intervention participants formed implementation intentions for achieving the healthy eating goals; participants in the active control condition completed health-related tasks; and passive control participants read health information. Eating habits and intentions were measured at baseline and 5-month follow-up. Results: Findings showed that the intervention was not effective in achieving the healthy eating goals. Conclusions: Our findings give some indication that implementation intentions alone may not be a powerful enough means of changing eating behaviour in this age group. We reflect in detail upon the elements of the intervention that may have prevented its success in changing behaviour, for example, its failure to raise motivation, and the target of potentially unsuitable self-regulatory goals. We also discuss our findings, for example, on forming multiple plans and the role of intentions, within the context of current literature
Functionalized Upconversion Nanoparticles for Targeted Labelling of Bladder Cancer Cells.
Bladder cancer is the ninth most common cancer worldwide. Due to a high risk of recurrence and progression of bladder cancer, every patient needs long-term surveillance, which includes regular cystoscopy, sometimes followed by a biopsy of suspicious lesions or resections of recurring tumours. This study addresses the development of novel biohybrid nanocomplexes representing upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP) coupled to antibodies for photoluminescent (PL) detection of bladder cancer cells. Carrying specific antibodies, these nanoconjugates selectively bind to urothelial carcinoma cells and make them visible by emitting visible PL upon excitation with deeply penetrating near-infrared light. UCNP were coated with a silica layer and linked to anti-Glypican-1 antibody MIL38 via silica-specific solid-binding peptide. Conjugates have been shown to specifically attach to urothelial carcinoma cells with high expression of Glypican-1. This result highlights the potential of produced conjugates and conjugation technology for further studies of their application in the tumour detection and fluorescence-guided resection
