    Standardization of molecular monitoring for chronic myeloid leukemia in Latin America using locally produced secondary cellular calibrators

    A study of rotating globular clusters - the case of the old, metal-poor globular cluster NGC 4372

    Aims: We present the first in-depth study of the kinematic properties and derive the structural parameters of NGC 4372 based on the fit of a Plummer profile and a rotating, physical model. We explore the link between internal rotation to different cluster properties and together with similar studies of more GCs, we put these in the context of globular cluster formation and evolution. Methods: We present radial velocities for 131 cluster member stars measured from high-resolution FLAMES/GIRAFFE observations. Their membership to the GC is additionally confirmed from precise metallicity estimates. Using this kinematic data set we build a velocity dispersion profile and a systemic rotation curve. Additionally, we obtain an elliptical number density profile of NGC 4372 based on optical images using a MCMC fitting algorithm. From this we derive the cluster's half-light radius and ellipticity as r_h=3.4'+/-0.04' and e=0.08+/-0.01. Finally, we give a physical interpretation of the observed morphological and kinematic properties of this GC by fitting an axisymmetric, differentially rotating, dynamical model. Results: Our results show that NGC 4372 has an unusually high ratio of rotation amplitude to velocity dispersion (1.2 vs. 4.5 km/s) for its metallicity. This, however, puts it in line with two other exceptional, very metal-poor GCs - M 15 and NGC 4590. We also find a mild flattening of NGC 4372 in the direction of its rotation. Given its old age, this suggests that the flattening is indeed caused by the systemic rotation rather than tidal interactions with the Galaxy. Additionally, we estimate the dynamical mass of the GC M_dyn=2.0+/-0.5 x 10^5 M_Sun based on the dynamical model, which constrains the mass-to-light ratio of NGC 4372 between 1.4 and 2.3 M_Sun/L_Sun, representative of an old, purely stellar population.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 12 pages, 14 figures, 2 table

    A long term spectroscopic and photometric study of the old nova HR Del

    The Nova HR Del, discovered in 1967, was found to be exceptionally bright in the optical and UV during the whole lifetime of the IUE satellite (ending in 1996) and appears to be still extremely luminous today. The reason for this continuing activity is not clear; continuing weak thermonuclear burning might be involved. HR Del was thus monitored over several years, both in broad band photometry and spectroscopically in the Hα\alpha spectral region. The profile of the Hα\alpha line shows two components: a narrow, central component; and broader wings. The former is most easily understood as being due to an accretion disk, whose geometry might lead to it partly occulting itself. That component shows something like an S wave with an orbital phase dependance, suggesting that it could be due to a spot bright in Hα\alpha. The wide component must come from another region, with a probably non-negligible contribution from the material ejected during the 1967 outburst. Non-orbital variations of the Hα\alpha equivalent width were found both on long and short time scales. Similar variations were found in the photometry, showing a component with a clear dependence on the orbital phase, but no obvious relation with the Hα\alpha variations. The orbital part of the photometric variations can be explained by irradiation of the companion, while the properties of Hα\alpha are explicable by the presence of an accretion disk and a spot bright in Hα\alpha.Comment: 12 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Nonlinear hyperbolic systems: Non-degenerate flux, inner speed variation, and graph solutions

    We study the Cauchy problem for general, nonlinear, strictly hyperbolic systems of partial differential equations in one space variable. First, we re-visit the construction of the solution to the Riemann problem and introduce the notion of a nondegenerate (ND) system. This is the optimal condition guaranteeing, as we show it, that the Riemann problem can be solved with finitely many waves, only; we establish that the ND condition is generic in the sense of Baire (for the Whitney topology), so that any system can be approached by a ND system. Second, we introduce the concept of inner speed variation and we derive new interaction estimates on wave speeds. Third, we design a wave front tracking scheme and establish its strong convergence to the entropy solution of the Cauchy problem; this provides a new existence proof as well as an approximation algorithm. As an application, we investigate the time-regularity of the graph solutions (X,U)(X,U) introduced by the second author, and propose a geometric version of our scheme; in turn, the spatial component XX of a graph solution can be chosen to be continuous in both time and space, while its component UU is continuous in space and has bounded variation in time.Comment: 74 page

    Road Infrastructure Safety Management. Proactive Safety Tools to Evaluate Potential Conditions of Risk

    The identification of highly critical sections in a road network is possible by examining the network operation, with the goal of determining the risk factors and observe the critical issues, in order to better plan possible improvements. Therefore, this study proposes a method to evaluate the coherence of existing road layouts, through the analysis of the geometric characteristics, theoretical speeds and drivers operating speeds, under different environmental and flow conditions. The analysis focuses on the road network managed by ANAS SpA in the Veneto Region, for which the reconstruction of the road axes geometry, the curvature graph and the theoretical design speed profile have been obtained, according to the indications of the Italian Ministerial Decree 05/11/2001. The theoretical design speed profile has then been compared with the information relating to the road users' mobility, in terms of the 85th percentile speeds, obtained from the extraction and analysis of the Floating Car Data (FCD). The data were processed by reconstructing the continuous profile of operating speeds with a specific regression function known as "smoothing cubic spline". The comparison with the theoretical design speeds allows to observe whether the users assume a behavior close to or distant from what is expected, based on the technical and geometrical characteristics of the road layout. The proposed methodology can contribute to the implementation of a proactive road safety check, aimed at recognizing and assessing the potential risk conditions for road traffic, with particular attention to the point of view of the road user

    Generation of primary photons through inverse Compton scattering using a Monte Carlo simulation code

    Photon sources based on inverse Compton scattering, namely, the interaction between relativistic electrons and laser photons, are emerging as quasimonochromatic energy-tunable sources either as compact alternatives to synchrotron facilities for the production of low-energy (10–100 keV) x rays or to reach the 1–100 MeV photon energy range, which is inaccessible at synchrotrons. Different interaction layouts are possible for electron and laser beams, and several applications are being studied, ranging from fundamental research in nuclear physics to advanced x-ray imaging in the biomedical field, depending on the radiation energy range, intensity, and bandwidth. Regardless of the specific application, a reliable tool for the simulation of the radiation produced is essential for the design, the commissioning, and, subsequently, the study and optimization of this kind of source. Different computational tools have been developed for this task, based on both a purely analytical treatment and Monte Carlo simulation codes. Each of these tools has strengths and weaknesses. Here, we present a novel Monte Carlo code based on GEANT4 for the simulation of inverse Compton scattering in the linear regime. The code produces results in agreement with CAIN, one of the most used Monte Carlo tools, for a wide range of interaction conditions at a computational time reduced by 2 orders of magnitude. Furthermore, the developed tool can be easily embedded in a GEANT4 user application for the tracking of photons generated through inverse Compton scattering in a given experimental setup

    Chemical characterisation of construction and demolitionwaste in Skopje city and its surroundings (Republic of Macedonia)

    In the Republic of Macedonia, construction and demolition waste is often dumped, underestimating the potential recycling and re-use as raw materials for civil engineering works and/or cement/ceramic industries. SAMCODE (Sustainable Approach to Managing Construction and Demolition Waste) is a know-how exchange program, the focus of which is chemical characterisation in terms of major and trace elements in order to evaluate the possible Macedonian construction and demolition waste recycling. Thirty-nine waste samples were collected from different dumps in Skopje and surroundings. X-ray fluorescence analyses, carried out on powdered samples, show i) highly variable concentrations, indicative of the heterogenous nature of construction and demolition waste, and ii) high concentration in Cr, Ni, and Zn with respect to Italian, Chinese, and Dutch tolerance limits, probably due to the presence of these elements in ophiolitic rocks and sulphide-bearing deposits, used as raw material in building activity. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analyses of leachates, performed to assess the mobility of heavy metals, show significant concentrations of Cr, and to a lesser extent, Ni. Results suggest that homogenisation processes of the recycled materials should be implemented and preliminary screening of construction and demolition waste should be performed to eliminate heavy metals-bearing components

    O fundo de pasto é um modo de vida típico do Semiárido brasileiro, onde grupos formados por pessoas com laços sanguíneos ou de compadrio ocupam áreas no meio da Caatinga formando comunidades que integram o uso de áreas coletivas e individuais, sendo as principais atividades a criação de caprinos e ovinos, o extrativismo e a agricultura voltados à segurança alimentar da família e dos animais. A cartografia social surge como uma ferramenta de gestão e planejamento dos territórios tradicionais considerando os saberes dos povos que estão inseridos diariamente nesses ambientes e podem descrever com propriedade sobre as relações com o meio onde vivem. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo a análise do material produzido durante a execução do mapeamento participativo da Comunidade Tradicional de Fundo de Pasto Cachoeirinha, Juazeiro/BA. Deste modo, seguiu-se a metodologia de mapeamento participativo a partir de oficina em conjunto com a comunidade. Foram construídos mapas temáticos para representar cada forma de uso da terra no território, correspondentes aos temas e subsistemas de manejo identificados pela comunidade: mapa da área coletiva do Fundo de Pasto, mapa dos lotes individuais, mapa dos quintais produtivos, mapa com a representação eral do território e mapa histórico destacando os principais acontecimentos que marcaram a historia da Comunidade. Os mapas culturais são importantes, pois são uma ferramenta a mais de apropriação do território com informações sobre uso e ocupação da terra, distribuição de áreas e roçados, áreas degradadas para recuperação e áreas conservadas.Edição dos Anais do XI Congresso Brasileiro de Agroecologia, São Cristóvão, Sergipe, 2020

    Proliferation and estrogen signaling can distinguish patients at risk for early versus late relapse among estrogen receptor positive breast cancers

    Introduction: We examined if a combination of proliferation markers and estrogen receptor (ER) activity could predict early versus late relapses in ER-positive breast cancer and inform the choice and length of adjuvant endocrine therapy. Methods: Baseline affymetrix gene-expression profiles from ER-positive patients who received no systemic therapy (n = 559), adjuvant tamoxifen for 5 years (cohort-1: n = 683, cohort-2: n = 282) and from 58 patients treated with neoadjuvant letrozole for 3 months (gene-expression available at baseline, 14 and 90 days) were analyzed. A proliferation score based on the expression of mitotic kinases (MKS) and an ER-related score (ERS) adopted from Oncotype DX® were calculated. The same analysis was performed using the Genomic Grade Index as proliferation marker and the luminal gene score from the PAM50 classifier as measure of estrogen-related genes. Median values were used to define low and high marker groups and four combinations were created. Relapses were grouped into time cohorts of 0-2.5, 0-5, 5-10 years. Results: In the overall 10 years period, the proportional hazards assumption was violated for several biomarker groups indicating time-dependent effects. In tamoxifen-treated patients Low-MKS/Low-ERS cancers had continuously increasing risk of relapse that was higher after 5 years than Low-MKS/High-ERS cancers [0 to 10 year, HR 3.36; p = 0.013]. High-MKS/High-ERS cancers had low risk of early relapse [0-2.5 years HR 0.13; p = 0.0006], but high risk of late relapse which was higher than in the High-MKS/Low-ERS group [after 5 years HR 3.86; p = 0.007]. The High-MKS/Low-ERS subset had most of the early relapses [0 to 2.5 years, HR 6.53; p < 0.0001] especially in node negative tumors and showed minimal response to neoadjuvant letrozole. These findings were qualitatively confirmed in a smaller independent cohort of tamoxifen-treated patients. Using different biomarkers provided similar results. Conclusions: Early relapses are highest in highly proliferative/low-ERS cancers, in particular in node negative tumors. Relapses occurring after 5 years of adjuvant tamoxifen are highest among the highly-proliferative/high-ERS tumors although their risk of recurrence is modest in the first 5 years on tamoxifen. These tumors could be the best candidates for extended endocrine therapy
