Feminism and the Critique of Violence: negotiating feminist political agency
The acute sensitivity of feminism to violence, in its many different forms and contexts, makes it a particularly interesting case for the examination of the relationship between politics and violence in theory and practice. Our purpose in this paper is not to adjudicate the normative question of whether feminism implies a commitment to pacifism or to the use of non-violence. Rather, we are interested in examining how the relation between feminist politics and violence is construed as feminists struggle to develop a politics in which opposition to patriarchal violence is central. We begin with the feminist critique of violence, and move to examine how particular articulations of that critique shape and are shaped by practices of feminist political agency in specific contestation over the goals and strategies of feminism. We use the well-known case of feminist debates over the Greenham Common Peace Camp in the UK in the 1980s to demonstrate how negotiating women's political agency in relation to opposition to male violence poses problems, both for feminists who embrace non-violence and prioritize the opposition to war, and for feminists who are suspicious of non-violence and of the association of feminism with peace activism. In both cases, the debates over Greenham demonstrate the fundamentally political character of the ways in which the relation and distinction between violence and politics are conceptually and practically negotiated

Extreme UV QSOs
We present a sample of spectroscopically confirmed QSOs with FUV-NUV color
(as measured by GALEX photometry) bluer than canonical QSO templates and than
the majority of known QSOs. We analyze their FUV to NIR colors, luminosities
and optical spectra. The sample includes a group of 150 objects at low redshift
(z 0.5), and a group of 21 objects with redshift 1.7z2.6. For the low
redshift objects, the "blue" FUV-NUV color may be caused by enhanced Ly
emission, since Ly transits the GALEX FUV band from z=0.1 to z=0.47.
Synthetic QSO templates constructed with Ly up to 3 times stronger than
in standard templates match the observed UV colors of our low redshift sample.
The H emission increases, and the optical spectra become bluer, with
increasing absolute UV luminosity. The UV-blue QSOs at redshift about 2, where
the GALEX bands sample restframe about 450-590A (FUV) and about 590-940A(NUV),
are fainter than the average of UV-normal QSOs at similar redshift in NUV,
while they have comparable luminosities in other bands. Therefore we speculate
that their observed FUV-NUV color may be explained by a combination of steep
flux rise towards short wavelengths and dust absorption below the Lyman limit,
such as from small grains or crystalline carbon. The ratio of Ly to CIV
could be measured in 10 objects; it is higher (30% on average) than for
UV-normal QSOs, and close to the value expected for shock or collisional

Slow learning about inhibitors in human contingency learning
Conditioned inhibition is observed after training in which a stimulus signals the absence of an otherwise expected outcome. For example, in Pavlov’s (1927) procedure for conditioned inhibition, A+ trials are interspersed with AX- trials, where (+) indicates reinforcement and (-) notes non-reinforcement. Most models of learning assume that the surprisingness of the outcome is important for learning. Such models predict weaker terminal responding to a previous inhibitor than to a previously neutral stimulus after cue-outcome pairings. Such models also predict that learning about the inhibitor will be faster than learning about the neutral stimulus because the inhibitor is more surprising. To empirically test these different predictions, a 2 (Inhibitor vs. Neutral stimulus) X 3 (Number of Trials [Zero vs. One vs. Two] mixed design was conducted in a human contingency learning procedure. Our experiment revealed faster excitatory learning for a previously neutral stimulus than for a previous inhibitory stimulus, which is inconsistent with the view that surprise drives learning

Quantum chemical studies of redox properties and conformational changes of a four-center iron CO2 reduction electrocatalyst.
The CO2 reduction electrocatalyst [Fe4N(CO)12]- (abbrev. 1-) reduces CO2 to HCO2- in a two-electron, one-proton catalytic cycle. Here, we employ ab initio calculations to estimate the first two redox potentials of 1- and explore the pathway of a side reaction involving CO dissociation from 13-. Using the BP86 density functional approximation, the redox potentials were computed with a root mean squared error of 0.15 V with respect to experimental data. High temperature Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics was employed to discover a reaction pathway of CO dissociation from 13- with a reaction energy of +10.6 kcal mol-1 and an activation energy of 18.8 kcal mol-1; including harmonic free energy terms, this yields ΔGsep = 1.4 kcal mol-1 for fully separated species and ΔG‡ = +17.4 kcal mol-1, indicating CO dissociation is energetically accessible at ambient conditions. The analogous dissociation pathway from 12- has a reaction energy of 22.1 kcal mol-1 and an activation energy of 22.4 kcal mol-1 (ΔGsep = 12.8 kcal mol-1, ΔG‡ = +18.1 kcal mol-1). Our computed harmonic vibrational analysis of [Fe4N(CO)11]3- or 23- reveals a distinct CO-stretching peak red-shifted from the main CO-stretching band, pointing to a possible vibrational signature of dissociation. Multi-reference CASSCF calculations are used to check the assumptions of the density functional approximations that were used to obtain the majority of the results
QSO hosts and environments at z=0.9 to 4.2: JHK images with adaptive optics
We have observed nine QSOs with redshifts 0.85 to 4.16 at near-IR wavelengths
with the adaptive optics bonnette of the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope.
Exposure times ranged from 1500 to 24000s (mostly near 7000s) in J, H, or K
bands, with pixels 0.035 arcsec on the sky. The FWHM of the co-added images at
the location of the quasars are typically 0.16 arcsec. Including another QSO
published previously, we find associated QSO structure in at least eight of ten
objects, including the QSO at z = 4.16. The structures seen in all cases
include long faint features which appear to be tidal tails. In four cases we
have also resolved the QSO host galaxy, but find them to be smooth and
symmetrical: future PSF removal may expand this result. Including one object
previously reported, of the nine objects with more extended structure, five are
radio-loud, and all but one of these appear to be in a dense small group of
compact galaxy companions. The radio-quiet objects do not occupy the same dense
environments, as seen in the NIR. In this small sample we do not find any
apparent trends of these properties with redshift, over the range 0.8 < z <
2.4. The colors of the host galaxies and companions are consistent with young
stellar populations at the QSO redshift. Our observations suggest that adaptive
optic observations in the visible region will exhibit luminous signatures of

Block copolymers by the conversion of living lithium initiated anionic polymerization into living ruthenium ROMP
This paper describes a method for the synthesis of well-defined AB block copolymers, where one block is synthesized via anionic polymerization initiated with alkyllithium compounds, and one by ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) using well-defined ruthenium macroinitiators. This methodology was demonstrated by copolymerizing styrene with norbornene derivatives. Polystyrene was synthesized via living anionic polymerization initiated by sec-butyllithium, and functionalized to form macromonomers. These were used as precursors to well-defined ruthenium macroinitiators, the macromonomers being converted by an alkylidene exchange reaction with ruthenium propylidene initiator RuCl2(CHEt)(PCy3)2. These macroinitiators were used to initiate the ROMP of various norbornene derivatives in order to synthesize well-defined block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions
The host galaxies of luminous quasars
We present results of a deep HST/WFPC2 imaging study of 17 quasars at z~0.4,
designed to determine the properties of their host galaxies. The sample
consists of quasars with absolute magnitudes in the range -24>M_V>-28, allowing
us to investigate host galaxy properties across a decade in quasar luminosity,
but at a single redshift. We find that the hosts of all the RLQs, and all the
RQQs with nuclear luminosities M_V<-24, are massive bulge-dominated galaxies,
confirming and extending the trends deduced from our previous studies. From the
best-fitting model host galaxies we have estimated spheroid and black-hole
masses, and the efficiency (with respect to Eddington luminosity) with which
each quasar is radiating. The largest inferred black-hole mass in our sample is
\~3.10^9 M_sun, comparable to those at the centres of M87 and Cygnus A. We find
no evidence for super-Eddington accretion in even the most luminous objects. We
investigate the role of scatter in the black-hole:spheroid mass relation in
determining the ratio of quasar to host-galaxy luminosity, by generating
simulated populations of quasars lying in hosts with a Schechter mass function.
Within the subsample of the highest luminosity quasars, the observed variation
in nuclear-host luminosity ratio is consistent with being the result of the
scatter in the black-hole:spheroid relation. Quasars with high nuclear-host
ratios can be explained by sub-Eddington accretion onto black holes in the
high-mass tail of the black-hole:spheroid relation. Our results imply that,
owing to the Schechter cutoff, host mass should not continue to increase
linearly with quasar luminosity, at the very highest luminosities. Any quasars
more luminous than M_V=-27 should be found in massive elliptical hosts which at
the present day would have M_V ~ -24.5.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 18 pages; 7 figures and 17

Economics knowledge, attitudes and experience of student teachers in Scotland
There is a move away from teaching economics as a separate subject in Scotland. It is now mainly taught within Business Management courses in upper secondary school and is embedded within several subject areas in both primary and early secondary curricula, a move that is in step with broader curricular aims to break down barriers among subjects. This writing discusses the need for clearly situated teaching and learning of economics, provided by teachers provided by teachers who have sufficient background knowledge to devise effective contexts for learning, whether or not it is taught as a discrete subject. The results of a survey of student teachers' levels of economic literacy are analysed and recommendations made for the preparation of teachers to deal effectively with embedded approaches to teaching about economics
