This study is aimed to examine the predominant inflammatory cells in nasal polyps (NP) in the local community and its correlation to the clinical presentations. Materials and Methods: The study was done retrospectively looking at patients who had undergone functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM), Kelantan, Malaysia with a histopathological diagnosis of nasal polyposis (NP), between the years 2004 to 2008. Sixty two patients between the ages of 18 years to 60 years old were selected and data relevant to the study were collected from the patient’s folders using a specially created form prepared for the study. The NP histopathology report from each patient underwent FESS were analysed and the patients were divided into eosinophilic and non eosinophilic dominant group. Clinical presentations from each patient were also gathered and analysed according to the NP group. Results: In HUSM, there were a higher number of eosinophilic types NP as compared to the neutrophilic type NP which is contrary to other study conducted on Asian populations. The clinical symptom correlations between either eosinophilic or non-eosinophilic type of NP have not shown any significant associations. Conclusion: The study showed that the incidence of histological subtypes of nasal polyp in HUSM is almost the same as that found in other parts of the world (Europe and North America) which will reduce the possibility of racial or geographical influence on the pathogenesis of the nasal polyp. Clinical symptoms and presentation alone are not enough to differentiate the type of the nasal polyp without the histological study

Composites with fiber reinforcement are often a popular lightweight option. Due to their unique qualities, fiber-reinforced composites are the best alternative to traditional materials. Mechanical parameters of a carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy resin (CFRE) composite reinforced with date seed granulated powder (DSGP) were examined at the room temperature. The mechanical qualities included tensile, flexural, and impact strength. Enhanced mechanical properties were noticed compared to carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite produced using the hand lay-up method and vacuum bag. The DSGP-reinforced CFRE with weight ratios of 0%, 15%, 25%, and 35% were considered. The test results revealed the maximum values of breaking force, maximum bending force, energy absorption capacity, and hardness number for 15%, 35%, 25%, 25% Wt DSGP samples. The results show that the optimal composition for carbon fiber reinforced epoxy with date seed granules is in the range from 15% to 25% wt. GDS. This study reveals that carbon fiber-date seed-reinforced composites are excellent substitutes for carbon fiber composites since they offer better mechanical properties at a lower cost

This study explores the influence of partial replacement of high reactivity Attapulgite (HRA) with cement by weight and evaluate the effect of curing temperatures on the compressive strength of modified cement paste (MCP). Recently, the Iraqi clay(Attapulgite) has been processed to pozzolanic material HRA, after extracting it from the quarry the clays crushed and grind to filler then specific the suitable calcinations temperature to make this clays as a pozolznic material. The possibility of replacing the Iraqi clays with cement can be reduce the cost and the impact of cement manufacturing on environment. In this study, three percentages of high reactivity Attapulgite used as a replacement 0, 10 and 20 % by weight of cement. The samples cured in four temperatures 20, 40, 60 and 80 °C. The samples with dimension 50x50x50 mm3 were casted and tested at ages 7, and 28 days. The test result shows that the compressive strength at early ages without HRA and cured at 20 °C were higher than samples with HRA. The maximum percentage of HRA as a replacement with cement has a reduced the compressive strength of the concrete. The result at 28 days for the samples with 10% of HRA at curing temperature 40 °C shows increased in compressive strength up to 60 °C, while when the samples were cured at curing temperature 80 °C shows decreased the compressive strength

The challenge for future generation of wireless environment is on how to choose the appropriate wireless access network connection when there are several different wireless networks are existed. Hence, a vertical handover network selection (VHONS) being used to aid in term of service quality for user's satisfaction of the mobile terminal. This article intends to propose a new method of choosing the vertical handover network. This method covers the weight distribution and cost factor techniques. The weight distribution is used to measure different weights for existing wireless network based on the user's preference and mobile terminal power. The cost factor technique is also used to identify the cost for performing handover target by considering every network parameters and its weight. Results obtained showed that the algorithm has the ability to increase user's satisfaction compared to other algorithms, which consistently choose one accessible network

Products by solid-state recycling of aluminum chips in hot extrusion process were controlled by temperature related parameters using preheating temperature 450 °C, 500 °C, and 550°C for 1 hr, 2 hr, and 3 hr preheating time. By using Design of Experiments (DOE), the results found that the preheating temperature is more important to be controlled rather than the preheating time in analysis both mechanical and physical properties. The results also found that increasing of temperature led to the high tensile strength and low microhardness. The profile extruded at 550 °C with 3 hr duration had gained the optimum case to get the maximum tensile strength and the profile extruded at 450 °C with 1 hr had result the optimum case to gain the maximum microhardness. For the optimum cases, heat treatment was carried out using quenching temperature at 530 ºC for 2 hr and aging process at 175 ºC for 4 hr. The tensile strength and microhardness of extrudes specimens were improved significantly by heat treatment

Trade-off between area and speed for projective Edwards Elliptic Curves Crypto-system over GF (p) using parallel hardware designs and architectures

    Get PDF
Elliptic Curves Crypto-system (ECC) has been widely involved in many security applications. ECC computations suffer the long time inversion operation when applied using usual affine coordinates which affects the performance of ECC. Moreover, while the majority of previous researches focused on addressing the performance of ECC, other factors that play crucial role in building efficient ECC design for different security applications have not been intensively investigated, such as area, system utilization, resources-consuming, AT, and AT2 cost factors. Our research proposes several designs and architectures for Edwards ECC over GF (p) using projective coordinates (X/Z2 Y/Z2). All our proposed designs apply ECC computations with no inversion operation. To improve the performance even further, our research utilizes the inherent parallelism in elliptic curves computations by applying arithmetic operations for ECC in parallel. Our results show that the performance for the proposed 5-PM design overcomes designs using the known projective coordinates as well as the affine coordinates, since it achieves the shortest time delay. Furthermore, the other proposed designs provide an attractive trade-off between mentioned factors by varying the degree of parallelism for ECC computational schemes. Although this trade-off compromises the performance of ECC, the other factors were enhanced progressively. This helps to select the most suitable ECC design for several elliptic curves applications according to their requirements and available resources. The 2-PM design obtains the best system utilization results and AT cost with less area in comparison with designs using a higher degree of parallelism

Influence of laser treatment on mechanical properties, wear resistance, and Vickers hardness of aluminum alloy was studied. The specimens were treated by using Nd:YaG laser of energy 780 mj, wavelength 512 nm, and duration time 8 ns. The wear behavior of the specimens was studied for all specimens before and after treatment by Nd:YaG laser and the dry wear experiments were carried out by sing pinon-disc technique. The specimens were machined as a disk with diameter of 25 mm and circular groove in depth of 3 mm. All specimens were conducted by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray florescence analysis (EDS), optical microscopy, and Vickers hardness. The results showed that the dry wear rate was decreased after laser hardening and increased Vickers hardness values by ratio of 2.4 : 1. The results showed that the values of wear rate for samples having circular grooves are less than samples without grooves after laser treatment

    Get PDF
Rooftop solar energy is a system that is built at the roof of either a residential or commercial building. Many systems can be installed to make rooftop solar energy, with one of them being the photovoltaic (PV) system. The PV system is solar electricity that has been used on buildings owing to the several benefits accorded by it, among which are, cooling the environment in the building, reducing the cost of electricity bill, and facilitating an environment friendly. In order to ensure that rooftop solar energy is widely used, the KeTTHA, under the government, provides a few programs to the society, but regardless of such programs, the majority of people remain unaware of this rooftop solar energy. In this study, the researcher has examined awareness of solar energy among UUM's staff and students. Based on interviews and questionnaire survey, the researcher determined the level of knowledge and information they hold regarding solar energy, in general, and rooftop solar energy, in particular. The study calculated the percentage of awareness among male and female students, after which, the differences between their awareness were obtained. The benefits and methods used to calculate the results were also presented in this study. The results were solely based on the staff and students’ perceptions at UUM. In the future, studies should include a more extensive group from Malaysian society
