    Predicting Diabetes Onset: an Ensemble Supervised Learning Approach

    An exploratory research is presented to gauge the impact of feature selection on heterogeneous ensembles. The task is to predict diabetes onset with healthcare data obtained from UC Irvine (UCI) database. Evidence suggests that accuracy and diversity are the two vital requirements to achieve good ensembles. Therefore, the research presented in this paper exploits diversity from heterogeneous base classifiers; and the optimisation effect of feature subset selection in order to improve accuracy. Five widely used classifiers are employed for the ensembles and a meta-classifier is used to aggregate their outputs. The results are presented and compared with similar studies that used the same dataset within the literature. It is shown that by using the proposed method, diabetes onset prediction can be done with higher accuracy

    Evaluating the Efficacy of Topical Silver Nitrate and Intramuscular Antimonial Drugs in the Treatment of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Sokoto, Nigeria

    Background: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a disease of public health importance in Nigeria, with high prevalence in the Northwest and Northeastern part of the country. The side effects of antimonial drugs {stibogluconate (SSG) and meglumine antimoniate} in the treatment of CL have often resulted in poor drug adherence and default by patients and possible drug resistance. The increasing default to follow-up and the significant side effects associated with antimonial therapy necessitated the dire need of alternative therapeutic modalities. Thus, this study aimed at comparing the efficacy of topical silver nitrate with the antimonial drugs in the treatment of CL. Methods: A total of 95 patients with clinically diagnosed leishmaniasis and parasitologically proven CL participated in the study after their informed-consent had been obtained. The treatment selection was optional to the participants. Sixty (63.2%) patients received alternative therapy of topical silver nitrate as a single dose while 35(36.8%) patients received antimonial therapy for 21 days at 20mg/kg body weight. Results: On day 30 of treatment, 68 (86.1%) lesions among patients on topical silver nitrate healed completely as compared with only 5 (6.8%) among those on i.m. SSG. There was no improvement in 25 (34.2%) lesions among those on i.m. SSG compared with only 1 (1.2%) lesion among those on topical silver nitrate. Overall, there was a  statistically significant difference in the cure rate among patients on silver nitrate as compared with those on i.m. SSG on the 21st and 30th days of treatment.(p<0.05).     Skeletal muscle dysfunction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

    Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a debilitating disease characterized by inflammation-induced airflow limitation and parenchymal destruction. In addition to pulmonary manifestations, patients with COPD develop systemic problems, including skeletal muscle and other organ-specific dysfunctions, nutritional abnormalities, weight loss, and adverse psychological responses. Patients with COPD often complain of dyspnea on exertion, reduced exercise capacity, and develop a progressive decline in lung function with increasing age. These symptoms have been attributed to increases in the work of breathing and in impairments in gas exchange that result from airflow limitation and dynamic hyperinflation. However, there is mounting evidence to suggest that skeletal muscle dysfunction, independent of lung function, contributes significantly to reduced exercise capacity and poor quality of life in these patients. Limb and ventilatory skeletal muscle dysfunction in COPD patients has been attributed to a myriad of factors, including the presence of low grade systemic inflammatory processes, nutritional depletion, corticosteroid medications, chronic inactivity, age, hypoxemia, smoking, oxidative and nitrosative stresses, protein degradation and changes in vascular density. This review briefly summarizes the contribution of these factors to overall skeletal muscle dysfunction in patients with COPD, with particular attention paid to the latest advances in the field

    17P. Building ICT Success Using PBL Based Practices

    Increasingly, nowadays students must learn more advanced technical skills in order to secure jobs in a competitive 21st century workforce. This is true even in the Gulf Countries, including the UAE, where less IT work opportunities are available and where competition to find a good IT job is becoming harder. Yet the curriculum that was available to teach them these cutting-edge skills was often textbook-based, uninspiring, and limited in its appeal. Therefore, it was essential to address these issues at the curriculum of developmental program of United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) before students move on to their specific discipline. Considering the earlier mentioned flaws in IT, UGRU curriculum, leadership team in spring 2005 decided to introduce critical and creative thinking and cognition based ICT literacy program along with PBL (Problem Based Learning). The basic objectives of the PBL projects are to promote (i) Research, (ii) Critical Thinking, and (iii) Application of ICT knowledge. The themes of the projects are based on geo-social, scientific or general awareness. In this paper the IT UGRU developmental program will be compared to those counterparts that exist in leading Universities such as UAE, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, UK, Canada, and USA. This paper describes the PBL based teaching strategies and their overall effectiveness. It also discusses the impact of these projects on student learning and achieving educational goals. Results are very encouraging. The outcome of this research indicates that using PBL in ICT classrooms can help students become self learners, able to search out, understand, analyze, and synthesize information in a better way. It also helps them to understand the real value of ICT in their lives

    An efficient protocol for in vitro propagation of Rosa gruss an teplitz and Rosa centifolia

    Rose is a beautiful flower having commercial and ornamental value. In order to establish protocol shoot tips explants of Rosa gruss an teplitz and Rosa centifolia were proliferated in vitro using MS medium supplemented with different levels of benzylaminopurine (0, 0.5,1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 mg l-1 ). Maximum numbers of shoots (3.906), shoot length (3.106 cm), fresh weight (178.47 mg) and dry weight (43.06 mg) was recorded at 1.0 mg l-1 BAP. For induction of root, uniform micro-shoots were excised and transferred to the rooting medium (1/2 MS macro, micro elements and vitamins) supplemented with 20 g l-1 sucrose and different concentrations (0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mg l-1) of indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). IBA increased culture rooting percentage (89.375), number of roots (8.7188) and root length (3.5781 cm) more efficiently at 0.50 mg l-1.Key words: In vitro propagation, BAP, indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), Rosa gruss an teplitz, Rosa centifolia

    The article is a continuation of the investigations concerning F-contractions which have been recently introduced in [Wardowski in Fixed Point Theory Appl. 2012:94,2012]. The authors extend the concept of F-contractive mappings to the case of nonlinear F-contractions and prove a fixed point theorem via the dynamic processes. The paper includes a non-trivial example which shows the motivation for such investigations. The work is summarized by the application of the introduced nonlinear F-contractions to functional equations

    Mitigating MAC Layer Performance Anomaly of Wi-Fi Networks through Adaptable Channelization

    . 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLANs) can support multiple data rates at physical layer by using adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme. However, this differential data rate capability introduces a serious performance anomaly in WLANs. In a network comprising of several nodes with varying transmission rates, nodes with lower data rate (slow nodes) degrade the throughput of nodes with higher transmission rates (fast nodes). The primary source of this anomaly is the channel access mechanism of WLANs which ensures long term equal channel access probability to all nodes irrespective of their transmission rates. In this work, we investigate the use of adaptable width channelization to minimize the effect of this absurdity in performance. It has been observed that surplus channel-width due to lower transmission rate of slow nodes can be assigned to fast nodes connected to other access points (APs), which can substantially increase the overall throughput of the whole network. We propose a medium access control (MAC) layer independent anomaly prevention (MIAP) algorithm that assigns channel-width to nodes connected with different APs based on their transmission rate. We have modeled the effect of adaptable channelization and provide lower and upper bounds for throughput in various network scenarios. Our empirical results indicate a possible increase in network throughput by more than 20% on employing the proposed MIAP algorith

    Macular Infarction Associated with Reactive Arthritis

    A 53-year-old woman visited the Department of Rheumatology with a chief complaint of a 3-day history of fever and chills and also presented with pain occuring in both knees at the time of outpatient visit. Based on rheumatologic and hematological lab studies, ultrasonography, and a needle aspiration biopsy of the articular cavity, the patient was diagnosed with reactive arthritis. On hospitalization day 3, consultation with the Department of Ophthalmology was requested regarding decreased visual acuity lasting for 3 days. Upon ophthalmologic examination, the corrected visual acuity was 0.1 in the right eye and 0.05 in the left eye. Upon slit lamp microscopy, there were no abnormal findings in the anterior segment. Upon fundus examination, however, there were yellow-white lesions in the macular area of both eyes. Fluorescein angiographywas performed to assess the macular lesions, and the findings were suggestive of macular infarction in both eyes. Due to a lack of other underlying disease, a past surgical history, and a past history of drug administration, the patient was diagnosed with macular infarction in both eyes associated with reactive arthritis. To date, there have been no other such cases reported. In a patient with reactive arthritis, we experienced a case of macular infarction in both eyes, which occurred without association with a past history of specific drug use or underlying disease.     Genetic Variation At 8Q24, Family History Of Cancer, And Upper Gastrointestinal Cancers In A Chinese Population

    Genetic variation at 8q24 is associated with prostate, bladder, breast, colorectal, thyroid, lung, ovarian, UADT, liver and stomach cancers. However, a role for variation at 8q24 in familial clustering of upper gastrointestinal cancers has not been studied. In order to explore potential inherited susceptibility, we analyzed epidemiologic data from a population-based case-control study of upper gastrointestinal cancers from Taixing, China. The study population includes 204 liver, 206 stomach, and 218 esophageal cancer cases and 415 controls. Associations between 8q24 rs1447295, rs16901979, rs6983267 and these cancers were stratified by family history of cancer. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were adjusted for potential confounders: age, sex, education, tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, and BMI at interview. We also adjusted for hepatitis B and aflatoxin (liver cancer) and Helicobacter pylori (stomach cancer). In a dominant model, among those with a family history of cancer, rs1447295 was positively associated with liver cancer (ORadj 2.80; 95% CI 1.15–6.80). Heterogeneity was observed (Pheterogeneity=0.029) with rs6983267 and liver cancer, with positive association in the dominant model among those with a family history of cancer and positive association in the recessive model among those without a family history of cancer. When considered in a genetic risk score model, each additional 8q24 risk genotype increased the odds of liver cancer by two-fold among those with a family history of cancer (ORadj 2.00; 95% CI 1.15–3.47). These findings suggest that inherited susceptibility to liver cancer may exist in the Taixing population and that variation at 8q24 might be a genetic component of that inherited susceptibility
