    Statistical Graphics in QUAIL: An Overview

    It has been suggested (Wainer, 1989) that the system first proposed by C.S. Peirce to organise knowledge is particularly suited to describing statistical graphics. Peirce felt that all information could be broken down into three different types { monadic information, which describes something in and of itself, dyadic information, which describes a relationship between two things, and triadic information, which describes the relation between two things mediated by a third. We can see how this applies in statistical graphics by considering the scatterplot. There, each case in a dataset is represented in the display by a glyph, which is monadic in nature. The scatterplot is a dyad; by positioning the case glyphs in the plane according to the values each case has on two variates X and Y , any empirical relationship between the variates can be seen. Triadic information is available by linking the scatterplot with another plot, say a dot-plot of a third variate, Z. Colouring the glyphs in the dot-plot within a given range of Z values, causes the corresponding glyphs in the scatterplot to be coloured in the same way. Here the relationship between X and Y is seen mediated by the third variate Z. This description of information is reflected in the design and implementation of our graphics software, which is part of the QUAIL system (Oldford et al). Quail (for QUantitative Analysis in Lisp) is a programming environment for statistical and quantitative computing. It has extensive arithmetical, mathematical, statistical and display facilities. This paper gives a brief overview of the principles underlying the statistical graphics facilities. The original software model was first illustrated in a video (Hurley and Oldford, 1988), and was described in Hurley and Oldford (1991). Perhaps surprisingly, we have not altered the original software model, rather we have extended and enriched its scope over the intervening years. The statistical graphics system in Quail has an object-oriented design, which we outline in Section 2. In the language of Peirce, individual objects have a monadic nature. We provide basic building blocks consisting of simple graphical objects such as point symbols and lines and container objects within which the simple objects are positioned to display relationships, ultimately forming plots. Container objects present dyadic information; Section 3 describes some such objects available in Quail. In Section 4, we outline a few of the ways triadic information is available; generally this involves comparison of plots, and, if the plots are displayed over time, interactive graphics

    United classification of cosmic gamma-ray bursts and their counterparts

    United classification of gamma-ray bursts and their counterparts is established on the basis of measured characteristics: photon energy E and emission duration T. The founded interrelation between the mentioned characteristics of events consists in that, as the energy increases, the duration decreases (and vice versa). The given interrelation reflects the nature of the phenomenon and forms the E-T diagram, which represents a natural classification of all observed events in the energy range from 10E9 to 10E-6 eV and in the corresponding interval of durations from about 10E-2 up to 10E8 s. The proposed classification results in the consequences, which are principal for the theory and practical study of the phenomenon.Comment: Keywords Gamma rays: burst

    "Author! Author!" : Shakespeare and biography

Yet for many years the place of the author in the practice of understanding literary works has been problematized, and even on occasions eliminated. Criticism reads the “works”, and may or may not refer to an author whose “life” contributed to their meaning. Biography seeks the author in the works, the personality that precedes the works and gives them their characteristic shape and meaning. But the form of literary biography addresses the unusual kind of “life” that puts itself into “works”, and this is particularly challenging where the “works” predominate massively over the salient facts of the “life”. This essay surveys the current terrain of Shakespeare biography, and considers the key questions raised by the medium: can we know anything of Shakespeare's “personality” from the facts of his life and the survival of his works? What is the status of the kind of speculation that inevitably plays a part in biographical reconstruction? Are biographers in the end telling us as much about themselves as they tell us about Shakespeare?Peer reviewe

    Magnetoluminescence

    Pulsar Wind Nebulae, Blazars, Gamma Ray Bursts and Magnetars all contain regions where the electromagnetic energy density greatly exceeds the plasma energy density. These sources exhibit dramatic flaring activity where the electromagnetic energy distributed over large volumes, appears to be converted efficiently into high energy particles and gamma-rays. We call this general process magnetoluminescence. Global requirements on the underlying, extreme particle acceleration processes are described and the likely importance of relativistic beaming in enhancing the observed radiation from a flare is emphasized. Recent research on fluid descriptions of unstable electromagnetic configurations are summarized and progress on the associated kinetic simulations that are needed to account for the acceleration and radiation is discussed.     Prevalence of drug-resistant minority variants in untreated HIV-1-infected individuals with and those without transmitted drug resistance detected by sanger sequencing

    Minority variant human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) resistance mutations are associated with an increased risk of virological failure during treatment with NNRTI-containing regimens. To determine whether individuals to whom variants with isolated NNRTI-associated drug resistance were transmitted are at increased risk of virological failure during treatment with a non-NNRTI-containing regimen, we identified minority variant resistance mutations in 33 individuals with isolated NNRTI-associated transmitted drug resistance and 49 matched controls. We found similar proportions of overall and nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor-associated minority variant resistance mutations in both groups, suggesting that isolated NNRTI-associated transmitted drug resistance may not be a risk factor for virological failure during treatment with a non-NNRTI-containing regimen. © The Author 2017.     Investigation of Some Physical Properties of Accretion Induced Collapse in Producing Millisecond Pulsars

    We investigate some physical characteristics of Millisecond Pulsar (MSP) such as magnetic fields, spin periods and masses, that are produced by Accretion Induced Collapse (AIC) of an accreting white dwarf (WD) in stellar binary systems. We also investigate the changes of these characteristics during the mass-transfer phase of the system in its way to become a MSP. Our approach allows us to follow the changes in magnetic fields and spin periods during the conversion of WDs to MSPs via AIC process. We focus our attention mainly on the massive binary WDs (M > 1.0Msun) forming cataclysmic variables, that could potentially evolve to reach Chandrasekhar limit, thereafter they collapse and become MSPs.     Prospective organisation of neonatal arm movements : a motor foundation of embodied agency, disrupted in premature birth

    Prospective motor control moves the body into the future, from where one is to where one wants to be. It is a hallmark of intentionality. But its origins in development is uncertain. In this study, we tested whether or not the arm movements of newborn infants were prospectively controlled. We measured the spatiotemporal organisation of 480 neonatal arm movements and 384 arm movements of infants prematurely born at-risk for neurodevelopmental disorder. We found 75% of healthy term-birth neonatal movements and 68% of prematurely-born infant movements conformed to the tauG-coupling model of prospective sensorimotor control. Prospective coupling values were significantly reduced in the latter (p = .010, r = .087). In both cases prospectively controlled movements were tightly organised by fixed-duration units with a base duration of 218 ms and additional temporal units of 145 ms. Yet distances remained constant. Thus, we demonstrate for the first time a precise prospective spatiotemporal organisation of neonatal arm movements and demonstrate at-risk infants exhibit reduced sensorimotor control.     An interlaboratory study of TEX86 and BIT analysis of sediments, extracts and standard mixtures.

    Two commonly used proxies based on the distribution of glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) are the TEX86 (TetraEther indeX of 86 carbon atoms) paleothermometer for sea surface temperature reconstructions and the BIT (Branched Isoprenoid Tetraether) index for reconstructing soil organic matter input to the ocean. An initial round-robin study of two sediment extracts, in which 15 laboratories participated, showed relatively consistent TEX86 values (reproducibility ±3-4°C when translated to temperature) but a large spread in BIT measurements (reproducibility ±0.41 on a scale of 0-1). Here we report results of a second round-robin study with 35 laboratories in which three sediments, one sediment extract, and two mixtures of pure, isolated GDGTs were analyzed. The results for TEX86 and BIT index showed improvement compared to the previous round-robin study. The reproducibility, indicating interlaboratory variation, of TEX86 values ranged from 1.3 to 3.0°C when translated to temperature. These results are similar to those of other temperature proxies used in paleoceanography. Comparison of the results obtained from one of the three sediments showed that TEX86 and BIT indices are not significantly affected by interlaboratory differences in sediment extraction techniques. BIT values of the sediments and extracts were at the extremes of the index with values close to 0 or 1, and showed good reproducibility (ranging from 0.013 to 0.042). However, the measured BIT values for the two GDGT mixtures, with known molar ratios of crenarchaeol and branched GDGTs, had intermediate BIT values and showed poor reproducibility and a large overestimation of the "true" (i.e., molar-based) BIT index. The latter is likely due to, among other factors, the higher mass spectrometric response of branched GDGTs compared to crenarchaeol, which also varies among mass spectrometers. Correction for this different mass spectrometric response showed a considerable improvement in the reproducibility of BIT index measurements among laboratories, as well as a substantially improved estimation of molar-based BIT values. This suggests that standard mixtures should be used in order to obtain consistent, and molar-based, BIT values
