Observation of Scaling Violations in Scaled Momentum Distributions at HERA
Charged particle production has been measured in deep inelastic scattering
(DIS) events over a large range of and using the ZEUS detector. The
evolution of the scaled momentum, , with in the range 10 to 1280
, has been investigated in the current fragmentation region of the Breit
frame. The results show clear evidence, in a single experiment, for scaling
violations in scaled momenta as a function of .Comment: 21 pages including 4 figures, to be published in Physics Letters B.

D* Production in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA
This paper presents measurements of D^{*\pm} production in deep inelastic
scattering from collisions between 27.5 GeV positrons and 820 GeV protons. The
data have been taken with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The decay channel
(+ c.c.) has been used in the study. The
cross section for inclusive D^{*\pm} production with
and is 5.3 \pms 1.0 \pms 0.8 nb in the kinematic region
{ GeV and }. Differential cross
sections as functions of p_T(D^{*\pm}), and are
compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations based on the photon-gluon
fusion production mechanism. After an extrapolation of the cross section to the
full kinematic region in p_T(D^{*\pm}) and (D^{*\pm}), the charm
contribution to the proton structure function is
determined for Bjorken between 2 10 and 5 10.Comment: 17 pages including 4 figure
Observation of Events with an Energetic Forward Neutron in Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA
In deep inelastic neutral current scattering of positrons and protons at the center of mass energy of 300 GeV, we observe, with the ZEUS detector, events with a high energy neutron produced at very small scattering angles with respect to the proton direction. The events constitute a fixed fraction of the deep inelastic, neutral current event sample independent of Bjorken x and Q2 in the range 3 · 10-4 \u3c xBJ \u3c 6 · 10-3 and 10 \u3c Q2 \u3c 100 GeV2
Differential cross-sections of D*+- photoproduction in e p collisions at HERA
Inclusive photoproduction of D*+- in ep collisions at HERA has been measured
with the ZEUS detector for photon-proton centre of mass energies in the range
115 < W < 280 GeV and photon virtuality Q**2 < 4 GeV**2. The cross section
sigma(ep --> D*X) integrated over the kinematic region pt(D*) > 3 GeV and -1.5
< eta(D*) < 1.0 is (10.6+-1.7(stat.)+1.6(syst.)-1.3(syst.)) nb. Differential
cross sections as functions of pt(D*), eta(D*) and W are given. The data are
compared with two next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions. For a
calculation using a massive charm scheme the predicted cross sections are
smaller than the measured ones. A recent calculation using a massless charm
scheme is in agreement with the data.Comment: 18 pages including 4 figure
Observation of isolated high E(t) photons in photoproduction at HERA
Events containing an isolated prompt photon with high transverse energy,
together with a balancing jet, have been observed for the first time in
photoproduction at HERA.The data were taken with the ZEUS detector, in a
centre of mass energy range 120--250 GeV. The fraction of the
incoming photon energy participating in the production of the prompt photon and
the jet, , shows a strong peak near unity, consistent with LO QCD
Monte Carlo predictions. In the transverse energy and pseudorapidity range
5\le \eTg < 10 GeV, , \eTj\ge 5 GeV, and
, with \xgO > 0.8, the measured cross section is
, in good agreement with a recent NLO calculation.Comment: 22 pages including 8 figure
Measurement of elastic J/#psi# photoproduction at HERA
The reaction #gamma# p #-># J/#psi#p has been studied in ep interactions using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The cross section for elastic J/#psi# photoproduction has been measured as a function of the photon-proton centre of mass energy W in the range 40 < W < 140 GeV at a median photon virtuality Q"2 of 5 x 10"-"5 GeV"2. The photoproduction cross section, #sigma#_#gamma#_p_#->#_J_/_#psi#_p, is observed to rise steeply with W. A fit to the data presented in this paper to determine the parameter #delta# in the form #sigma#_#gamma#_p_#->#_J_/_#psi#_p #propor to# W"#delta# yields the value #delta# = 0.92 #+-# 0.14 #+-# 0.10. The differential cross section d#sigma#/d vertical stroke t vertical stroke is presented over the range vertical stroke t vertical stroke < 1.0 GeV"2 where t is the square of the four-momentum exchanged at the proton vertex. d#sigma#/d vertical stroke t vertical stroke falls exponentially with a slope parameter of 4.6 #+-# 0.4"+"0"."4_-_0_._6 GeV"-"2. The measured decay angular distributions are consistent with s-channel helicity conservation. Measurement of the reaction gamma* p --> phi p in deep inelastic e+ p scattering at HERA
The production of mesons in the reaction (), for GeV and for
virtual photon-proton centre of mass energies () in the range 42-134 GeV,
has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. When compared to lower energy
data at similar , the results show that the \gamma^*p \rightarrow \phid
p cross section rises strongly with . This behaviour is similar to that
previously found for the cross section. This
strong dependence cannot be explained by production through soft pomeron
exchange. It is, however, consistent with perturbative QCD expectations, where
it reflects the rise of the gluon momentum density in the proton at small .
The ratio of , which has previously been
determined by ZEUS to be 0.065 0.013 (stat.) in photoproduction at a mean
of 70 GeV, is measured to be 0.18 0.05 (stat.) 0.03 (syst.) at
a mean of 12.3 GeV and mean of 100 GeV and is thus
approaching at large the value of 2/9 predicted from the quark charges of
the vector mesons and a flavour independent production mechanism.Comment: 22 pages, including 4 figures. Includes some minor editorial change
Dijet angular distributions in direct and resolved photoproduction at HERA
Jet photoproduction, where the two highest transverse energy (\ETJ) jets
have \ETJ above 6 GeV and a jet-jet invariant mass above 23~GeV, has been
studied with the ZEUS detector at the HERA collider. Resolved and direct
photoproduction samples have been separated. The cross section as a function of
the angle between the jet-jet axis and the beam direction in the dijet rest
frame has been measured for the two samples. The measured angular distributions
differ markedly from each other. They agree with the predictions of QCD
calculations, where the different angular distributions reflect the different
spins of the quark and gluon exchanged in the hard subprocess.Comment: 20 pages including 4 figure
F-2(D(3)) measurements at ZEUS
Results on the diffractive structure function F-2(D(3)) in deep inelastic neutral current positron-proton scattering (DIS) have been obtained by the ZEUS collaboration using two different methods. Diffractive interactions are selected by either requiring a small, not exponentially suppressed invariant hadronic mass M-X in the main detector or by detecting a fast proton in the ZEUS leading proton spectrometer (LPS). The results of the two methods are compared
Leading baryons at low x(L) in DIS and photoproduction at ZEUS
Results obtained by the ZEUS collaboration on leading baryon production in the proton fragmentation region are presented. The reaction gamma p --> NX, with N a proton or a neutron, is examined both at low and high photon virtuality
