Reply to Comment on "Reevaluation of the parton distribution of strange quarks in the nucleon"
A Comment on the recently published reevaluation of the polarization-averaged
parton distribution of strange quarks in the nucleon using final data on the
multiplicities of charged kaons in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering is
reviewed. Important features of the comparison of one-dimensional projections
of the multidimensional HERMES data are pointed out. A test of the
leading-order extraction of xS(x) using the difference between charged-kaon
multiplicities is repeated. The results are consistent with leading-order
predictions within the uncertainties in the input data, and do not invalidate

Emergency department based intervention with adolescent substance users: 10 year economic and health outcomes
BACKGROUND: Alcohol and other drug (AOD) use are significant cause of disease burden and costs among adolescents. METHODS: We conducted a randomized trial in hospital emergency departments (ED) following an AOD-related presentation, comparing usual care with brief advice and referral to link adolescents aged 12-19 years with external AOD services. Subsequently, we used health data linkage to assemble data on mortality, hospital admissions, ED attendances, out-patient mental health and use of opiate pharmacotherapies in the next 10 years. From these, treatment costs and rates of events were estimated and compared using generalized linear models. RESULTS: Those who received the intervention had lower costs (227: z=3.16, p=0.002) and rates (0.03 versus 0.25: z=2.57, p=0.010) of ED mental health AOD presentations. However, the intervention did not significantly reduce overall mean health costs per patient (intervention 64833, p=0.800). Similarly, there was no significant difference in the costs associated with hospitalizations (50911 p=0.924), overall ED presentations (4150, p=0.916), out-patient mental health services (7717, p=0.282), or opiate pharmacotherapies (2054, p=0.209). Injecting drug use was a significant baseline predictor of subsequent costs in the cohort (z=2.64, p=0.008). CONCLUSIONS: An ED delivered intervention may reduce direct ED costs and subsequent ED AOD attendances. There was also some indication that overall costs may be impacted, with economically large but non-significant differences between the groups. The high costs and morbidity incurred by some of this cohort illustrate the importance of targeting high-risk adolescents
Continuous infusion of 5-fluorouracil with alpha 2b interferon for advanced colorectal carcinoma.
Thirty patients with symptomatic colorectal carcinoma were commenced on treatment with 5-fluorouracil (2.5 g week-1) administered by continuous intravenous infusion and alpha 2b interferon (3 x 10(6) U s.c. three times a week). Six out of 30 patients (20%) achieved a partial response. Three patients (10%) had stable disease and 21 patients (70%) progressed on treatment. Twenty patients (67%) completed ten or more weeks of treatment. In nine patients, treatment was withdrawn after 2-9 weeks because of disease progression or death. One patient's treatment was interrupted by emergency surgery. The median survival for all patients was 210 days (7 months). The principal side-effects were oral mucositis (12/30 patients), nausea (8/30 patients) and transient diarrhoea (4/30 patients), and initial constitutional symptoms due to alpha 2b interferon. The combination of low-dose continuous infusional 5-fluorouracil and low-dose alpha 2b interferon is well tolerated but has no obvious advantage over alternative infusional regimens using 5-fluorouracil as a single agent

challenge for the scientific community. By giving a significant amount of new
information, GWs will be a cornerstone for a better understanding of
gravitational physics. In this paper we re-discuss that the GW astronomy will
permit to solve a captivating issue of gravitation. In fact, it will be the
definitive test for Einstein's general relativity (GR), or, alternatively, a

FMECA and FTA analysis applied to the manufacturing process of pulsating heat pipes
Pulsating heat pipes (PHPs) offer significant advantages for the thermal control of electronic components due to their simple manufacturing and high heat transfer rates. The reliability of PHPs has traditionally been assessed through long-life testing, but detailed reliability analyses from an equipment perspective are limited. The study of PHP reliability is essential due to its application and operational conditions. For instance, in aerospace applications these devices operate under severe conditions, and maintenance or replacement is impossible during operation, making them critical components in system functionality. The reliability analysis of PHPs focuses on the manufacturing process, considering future operating conditions. Although preliminary PHP testing will be conducted on Earth, laboratory conditions are less stringent due to the difficulty of replicating launch acceleration and space conditions for long-term testing under microgravity. This study presents an FMECA (Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis) of the pulsating heat pipe manufacturing process, breaking down the production of each component. The results indicate that the most critical point is concentrated in the assembly of these components, leading to a higher incidence of welding failures. It recommends further work to improve welding and analyze mechanical stresses within the heat pipe
Overnight changes in waking auditory evoked potential amplitude reflect altered sleep homeostasis in major depression
Objective: Sleep homeostasis is altered in major depressive disorder (MDD). Pre- to postsleep decline in waking auditory evoked potential (AEP) amplitude has been correlated with sleep slow wave activity (SWA), suggesting that overnight changes in waking AEP amplitude are homeostatically regulated in healthy individuals. This study investigated whether the overnight change in waking AEP amplitude and its relation to SWA is altered in MDD.
Method: Using 256-channel high-density electroencephalography, all-night sleep polysomnography and single-tone waking AEPs pre- and postsleep were collected in 15 healthy controls (HC) and 15 non-medicated individuals with MDD.
Results: N1 and P2 amplitudes of the waking AEP declined after sleep in the HC group, but not in MDD. The reduction in N1 amplitude also correlated with fronto-central SWA in the HC group, but a comparable relationship was not found in MDD, despite equivalent SWA between groups. No pre- to postsleep differences were found for N1 or P2 latencies in either group. These findings were not confounded by varying levels of alertness or differences in sleep variables between groups.
Conclusion: MDD involves altered sleep homeostasis as measured by the overnight change in waking AEP amplitude. Future research is required to determine the clinical implications of these findings
Gravitational Ionization: A Chaotic Net in the Kepler System
The long term nonlinear dynamics of a Keplerian binary system under the
combined influences of gravitational radiation damping and external tidal
perturbations is analyzed. Gravitational radiation reaction leads the binary
system towards eventual collapse, while the external periodic perturbations
could lead to the ionization of the system via Arnold diffusion. When these two
opposing tendencies nearly balance each other, interesting chaotic behavior
occurs that is briefly studied in this paper. It is possible to show that
periodic orbits can exist in this system for sufficiently small damping.
Moreover, we employ the method of averaging to investigate the phenomenon of

Beam-helicity asymmetries for single-hadron production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering from unpolarized hydrogen and deuterium targets
A measurement of beam-helicity asymmetries for single-hadron production in
deep-inelastic scattering is presented. Data from the scattering of 27.6 GeV
electrons and positrons off gaseous hydrogen and deuterium targets were
collected by the HERMES experiment. The asymmetries are presented separately as
a function of the Bjorken scaling variable, the hadron transverse momentum, and
the fractional energy for charged pions and kaons as well as for protons and
anti-protons. These asymmetries are also presented as a function of the three
aforementioned kinematic variables simultaneously
Gravitational-wave Detection With Matter-wave Interferometers Based On Standing Light Waves
We study the possibility of detecting gravitational-waves with matter-wave
interferometers, where atom beams are split, deflected and recombined totally
by standing light waves. Our calculation shows that the phase shift is
dominated by terms proportional to the time derivative of the gravitational
wave amplitude. Taking into account future improvements on current
technologies, it is promising to build a matter-wave interferometer detector
