The effects of this device operating in optical frequencies were studied, taking into account the central frequency of the conventional optical communication spectrum (C-band).     Field theoretic formulation of a mode-coupling equation for colloids

    The only available quantitative description of the slowing down of the dynamics upon approaching the glass transition has been, so far, the mode-coupling theory, developed in the 80's by G\"otze and collaborators. The standard derivation of this theory does not result from a systematic expansion. We present a field theoretic formulation that arrives at very similar mode-coupling equation but which is based on a variational principle and on a controlled expansion in a small dimensioneless parameter. Our approach applies to such physical systems as colloids interacting via a mildly repulsive potential. It can in principle, with moderate efforts, be extended to higher orders and to multipoint correlation functions

    The extent and practice of inclusion in independent schools in South Africa

    In line with international trends in education, South Africa has embraced inclusive education as the means by which learners who experience barriers to learning will be educated. As inclusion is beginning to be realised in South African schools, a gap in the emerging research base on inclusive education is that of inclusion in the independent sector. A study was undertaken to establish the extent to which learners who experience barriers to learning are included in independent schools belonging to ISASA (the largest independent schools association in South Africa) and the practices that facilitate inclusion. The results of a survey administered to principals were analysed quantitatively and reveal that most ISASA schools include learners who experience various barriers to learning and employ inclusive practices that are described in the international literature. We report on salient aspects emerging from the study and focus on the diversity of learners found in ISASA schools, as well as the inclusive practices found at school-wide, classroom, and individual levels. The practices described are the provision of on-site specialist personnel, support for teachers, building modifications to ensure access by persons using wheelchairs and various instructional practices and assessment adaptations. Recommendations arising from the study may give direction to South African schools pursuing inclusivity. South African Journal of Education Vol. 29 (1) 2009: pp. 105-12

    Hormonal regulation of female reproduction

    Reproduction is an event that requires the coordination of peripheral organs with the nervous system to ensure that the internal and external environments are optimal for successful procreation of the species. This is accomplished by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis that coordinates reproductive behavior with ovulation. The primary signal from the central nervous system is gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which modulates the activity of anterior pituitary gonadotropes regulating follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) release. As ovarian follicles develop they release estradiol, which negatively regulates further release of GnRH and FSH. As estradiol concentrations peak they trigger the surge release of GnRH, which leads to LH release inducing ovulation. Release of GnRH within the central nervous system helps modulate reproductive behaviors providing a node at which control of reproduction is regulated. To address these issues, this review focuses on several critical questions. How is the HPG axis regulated in species with different reproductive strategies? What internal and external conditions modulate the synthesis and release of GnRH? How does GnRH modulate reproductive behavior within the hypothalamus?     The aim of this paper is to extend the applicability of an algorithm for solving inconsistent linear systems to the rank-deficient case, by employing incomplete projections onto the set of solutions of the augmented system Ax-r = b. The extended algorithm converges to the unique minimal norm solution of the least squares solutions. For that purpose, incomplete oblique projections are used, defined by means of matrices that penalize the norm of the residuals.     Wireless link evaluation of a dielectric resonator nanoantenna

    Optical antennas/nanoantennas are optical elements that have gained highlight in this decade and have potential application in several branches of photonics/plasmonics, such as, optical sensors, lasers, solid state lighting, photovoltaics, microscopy, etc. Additionally, the dipole nanoantennas have been the antennas elements mostly studied in proposals for those applications and, in special, for free-space communication based on plasmonic circuits. Here we report some advantages of dielectric resonator nanoantennas (DRNAs) as elements for coupling light to plasmonic-based circuits. Fundamental antenna parameters such as reflection coefficient, gain, efficiency, among others, are evaluated and its advantages are highlighted for nanophotonics applications. A study about an optical link for circuits based on metal-dielectric-metal-dielectric (MDMD) nanostrip waveguides operating at the central wavelength of λ0 = 1.55 μm is evaluated. We studied the coupling of near- and far-fields of a DRNA matched to an MDMD nanostrip waveguide.
