    Fast Mid-IR Flashes Detected During Small Solar X-Ray Bursts

    Solar observations in the mid-infrared 8-14 \mu\m band continuum were carried out with cadence of 5 frames per second, in December 2007. Rapid small heated sources, with typical duration of the order of seconds, were found on the bright plage-like areas around sunspots, in association with relatively weak GOES soft X-ray bursts. This work presents the analysis of fast mid-infrared flashes detected during a GOES B2.0-class event on 10 December 2007, beginning at about 10:40 UT. Rapid brightness temperature enhancements of 0.5 to 2.0 K were detected at the Earth by a microbolometer array, using a telescope with 10.5 cm diameter aperture producing a diffraction limited field-of-view of 25 arcsec. Minimum detectable temperature change was of 0.1 K. The corresponding fluxes are 30-130 solar flux units.     The observed link between urbanization and invasion can depend on how invasion is measured

    Aim Cities are thought to promote biological invasions because invasive species are more often introduced in urban areas and because they are more successful in disturbed environments. However, the association is not as strongly supported by the literature as is generally assumed and might depend on how urbanization and invasion are measured. In this study, we test if the type of data used to assess the link between urbanization and invasion can affect a study's conclusions. Location Europe and middle Rhône valley (~5000 km2 in south-eastern France). Method We studied the spatial distribution of the invasive garden ant Lasius neglectus in its current introduced range in Europe and tested its association with urbanization using three measures of invasion (presence-only, presence–absence and population area) and two measures of urbanization (urban/nonurban land cover classification and proportion of impervious surfaces (buildings, road) per spatial unit). Results Based on presence-only data across Europe, L. neglectus occurred in urban areas 10 times more often than expected from a random geographical distribution. However, when controlling for spatial bias in sampling effort with presence–absence data (1870 sampling locations in the middle Rhône valley, France), the occurrence of the species was independent of urbanization. Moreover, the surface occupied by L. neglectus populations was negatively correlated with urbanization. Main conclusions These findings show that the type of occurrence data used to test the link between urbanization and invasion can strongly affect the conclusion of a study. This is particularly concerning because invasion studies often use presence-only data that are likely biased towards cities. Future urban invasions studies must be carefully designed to avoid this pitfall.Peer reviewe

    Sub-terahertz, microwaves and high energy emissions during the December 6, 2006 flare, at 18:40 UT

    The presence of a solar burst spectral component with flux density increasing with frequency in the sub-terahertz range, spectrally separated from the well-known microwave spectral component, bring new possibilities to explore the flaring physical processes, both observational and theoretical. The solar event of 6 December 2006, starting at about 18:30 UT, exhibited a particularly well-defined double spectral structure, with the sub-THz spectral component detected at 212 and 405 GHz by SST and microwaves (1-18 GHz) observed by the Owens Valley Solar Array (OVSA). Emissions obtained by instruments in satellites are discussed with emphasis to ultra-violet (UV) obtained by the Transition Region And Coronal Explorer (TRACE), soft X-rays from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) and X- and gamma-rays from the Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI). The sub-THz impulsive component had its closer temporal counterpart only in the higher energy X- and gamma-rays ranges. The spatial positions of the centers of emission at 212 GHz for the first flux enhancement were clearly displaced by more than one arc-minute from positions at the following phases. The observed sub-THz fluxes and burst source plasma parameters were found difficult to be reconciled to a purely thermal emission component. We discuss possible mechanisms to explain the double spectral components at microwaves and in the THz ranges.Comment: Accepted version for publication in Solar Physic

    Launch of solar coronal mass ejections and submillimeter pulse bursts

    The rapid solar spikes (100-500 ms) recently discovered at submillimeter waves bring new possibilities to investigate energetic processes near the solar surface that might have an important role in the launch and propelling of ionized mass away from the Sun. We present a study on the association between the launch time of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) observed by the LASCO instruments on the SOHO spacecraft and the onset of the new kind of rapid solar spikes (100-500 ms) observed at submillimetric waves (212 and 405 GHz) by the new Solar Submm-wave Telescope (SST). We investigated six submm-wave events, all found associated to CMEs. Seven related CME were identified. Five of them were associated with flares with large GOES class soft X-rays, presenting distinct time histories and associations at other energy ranges, and two of them were related to flares behind the solar limb, with simultaneous related activity observed in the visible solar disk. Ultraviolet images from EIT on SOHO show some kind of small or large-scale magnetic activity or brightening for all events. The extrapolation of apparent CME positions to the solar surface show that they occurred nearly coincident in time with the onset of submm-wave pulses for all six events. These results suggest that pulse bursts might be representative of an important early signature of CMEs, especially for events beginning near the center of the solar disk, sometimes identified as "halo" CMEs. They lead to several challenging questions relative to the physical nature of the pulses and its association to the launch and acceleration of coronal mass ejections. Although these evidences may favor multiple rapid energy releases at the origin near the solar surface, they require further research in order to better understand both diagnostics and model descriptions.Fil: Kaufmann, Pierre.     Promoter hypermethylation-mediated inactivation of multiple Slit-Robo pathway genes in cervical cancer progression

    BACKGROUND: Cervical Cancer (CC) exhibits highly complex genomic alterations. These include hemizygous deletions at 4p15.3, 10q24, 5q35, 3p12.3, and 11q24, the chromosomal sites of Slit-Robo pathway genes. However, no candidate tumor suppressor genes at these regions have been identified so far. Slit family of secreted proteins modulates chemokine-induced cell migration of distinct somatic cell types. Slit genes mediate their effect by binding to its receptor Roundabout (Robo). These genes have shown to be inactivated by promoter hypermethylation in a number of human cancers. RESULTS: To test whether Slit-Robo pathway genes are targets of inactivation at these sites of deletion, we examined promoter hypermethylation of SLIT1, SLIT2, SLIT3, ROBO1, and ROBO3 genes in invasive CC and its precursor lesions. We identified a high frequency of promoter hypermethylation in all the Slit-Robo genes resulting in down regulated gene expression in invasive CC, but the inhibitors of DNA methylation and histone deacetylases (HDACs) in CC cell lines failed to effectively reactivate the down-regulated expression. These results suggest a complex mechanism of inactivation in the Slit-Robo pathway in CC. By analysis of cervical precancerous lesions, we further show that promoter hypermethylation of Slit-Robo pathway occurs early in tumor progression. CONCLUSION: Taken together, these findings suggest that epigenetic alterations of Slit-Robo pathway genes (i) play a role in CC development, (ii) further delineation of molecular basis of promoter methylation-mediated gene regulation provides a potential basis for epigenetic-based therapy in advanced stage CC, and (iii) form epigenetic signatures to identify precancerous lesions at risk to progression

    Lack of efficacy of fenbendazole against Giardia duodenalis in a naturally infected population of dogs in France

    Giardiosis is a worldwide intestinal parasitosis, affecting both humans and animals. Treatment in dogs remains limited and the lack of efficacy of the few approved medications is a rising concern. In this study, 23 dogs raised by veterinary students and naturally infected with Giardia duodenalis were treated in home conditions with fenbendazole (50 mg/kg orally for 5 consecutive days). Fecal samples were collected immediately before treatment (FS1), 2–4 days after treatment (FS2) and 8–10 days after treatment (FS3). Giardia duodenalis cyst excretion was measured quantitatively by direct immunofluorescence assay (DFA) at FS1, FS2 and FS3. Molecular typing with a nested PCR targeting the SSU rDNA locus was also performed at FS1 and FS2. Fecal consistency improved in 16/21 dogs (76%) and mean cyst shedding was reduced by 84% after treatment. However, only 8/23 dogs (35%) achieved therapeutic success (≥90% reduction of cysts) and only 4/23 dogs (17%) had complete elimination of G. duodenalis. Molecular typing showed that dogs harbored only canine-specific assemblages, with a high prevalence of assemblage C in analyzed samples (30/39). We also detected different assemblages after treatment and nucleotide substitutions in assemblage C sequences that have not been described previously. Eight to ten days after treatment, high Giardia cyst excretion was measured, suggesting possible reinfection despite hygiene measures and/or multiplication. These data suggest that fenbendazole treatment may improve fecal consistency but has limited therapeutic efficacy against giardiosis in this population of dogs.     Properties of fast submillimeter time structures during a large solar flare

    We report properties of fast varying submillimeter emission during one of the strongest solar radio flares of solar cycle 23. Emission was obtained by the Solar Submillimeter-Wave Telescope at 212 and 405 GHz and compared with hard X-ray and γ-ray counts up to few tens of MeV photon energy ranges. We employ different methods to detect and characterize flux density variations and find that during the impulsive phase of the event, the closer in time to the peak flare, the higher the occurrence of the fastest and brightest time structures. The good comparison with hard X-ray and γ-ray count rates indicates that fast submillimeter pulses are the signatures of primary energetic injections. The characteristics of the fast spikes at 212 and 405 GHz, such as their flux density and localization, compared to those of the underlying slower impulsive component, also suggest that their nature is different.Fil: Raulin, Jean Pierre.     Integrative genomics analysis of chromosome 5p gain in cervical cancer reveals target over-expressed genes, including Drosha

    Background: Copy number gains and amplifications are characteristic feature of cervical cancer (CC) genomes for which the underlying mechanisms are unclear. These changes may possess oncogenic properties by deregulating tumor-related genes. Gain of short arm of chromosome 5 (5p) is the most frequent karyotypic change in CC. Methods: To examine the role of 5p gain, we performed a combination of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and gene expression analyses on invasive cancer and in various stages of CC progression. Results: The SNP and FISH analyses revealed copy number increase (CNI) of 5p in 63% of invasive CC, which arises at later stages of precancerous lesions in CC development. We integrated chromosome 5 genomic copy number and gene expression data to identify key target over expressed genes as a consequence of 5p gain. One of the candidates identified was Drosha (RNASEN), a gene that is required in the first step of microRNA (miRNA) processing in the nucleus. Other 5p genes identified as targets of CNI play a role in DNA repair and cell cycle regulation (BASP1, TARS, PAIP1, BRD9, RAD1, SKP2, and POLS), signal transduction (OSMR), and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (NNT, SDHA, and NDUFS6), suggesting that disruption of pathways involving these genes may contribute to CC progression. Conclusion: Taken together, we demonstrate the power of integrating genomics data with expression data in deciphering tumor-related targets of CNI. Identification of 5p gene targets in CC denotes an important step towards biomarker development and forms a framework for testing as molecular therapeutic targets

    Sex-dependent role of CD300f immune receptor in generalized anxiety disorder.

    Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) presents a high prevalence in the population, leading to distress and disability. Immune system alterations have been associated with anxiety-related behaviors in rodents and GAD patients. CD300f immune receptors are highly expressed in microglia and participate not only in the modulation of immune responses but also in pruning and reshaping synapses. It was recently demonstrated that CD300f might be influential in the pathogenesis of depression in a sex-dependent manner. Here, we evaluated the role of CD300f immune receptor in anxiety, using CD300f knockout mice (CD300f-/-) and patients with GAD. We observed that male CD300f-/- mice had numerous behavioral changes associated with a low-anxiety phenotype, including increased open field central locomotion and rearing behaviors, more exploration in the open arms of the elevated plus-maze test, and decreased latency to eat in the novelty suppressed feeding test. In a cross-sectional population-based study, including 1111 subjects, we evaluated a common single-nucleotide polymorphism rs2034310 (C/T) in the cytoplasmatic tail of CD300f gene in individuals with GAD. Notably, we observed that the T allele of the rs2034310 polymorphism conferred protection against GAD in men, even after adjusting for confounding variables. Overall, our data demonstrate that CD300f immune receptors are involved in the modulation of pathological anxiety behaviors in a sex-dependent manner. The biological basis of these sex differences is still poorly understood, but it may provide significant clues regarding the neuropathophysiological mechanisms of GAD and can pave the way for future specific pharmacological interventions
