    Investigating the insecticidal potential of Geomyces (Myxotrichaceae: Helotiales) and Mortierella (Mortierellacea: Mortierellales) isolated from Antarctica

    Fungi isolated from environmentally challenging habitats can have adaptations of potential value when developed as insect pest-controls. Fungal isolates collected from Antarctica, Geomyces sp. I, Geomyces sp. II, Mortierella signyensis and M. alpina, were investigated for (i) growth characteristics at 0-35[degree sign]C, (ii) spore production at 10 and 20[degree sign]C, (iii) viability following exposure to freezing temperatures, and (iv) insecticidal activity against waxmoths (Galleria mellonella L.), houseflies (Musca domestica L.), mealworms (Tenebrio molitor L.) and black vine weevils (Otiorhynchus sulcatus Fabricius). All isolates showed growth between 5-20[degree sign]C, with some showing growth outside this range. Geomyces isolates sporulated over a wider range of conditions than the Mortierella isolates. Spore germination at 10[degree sign]C was higher for Geomyces sp. II when this isolate was produced at 10 compared to 20[degree sign]C (greatest difference 74.6 vs 32.7%). All isolates grew, with the exception of M. alpina, following exposure to -20[degree sign]C for 4 weeks. Insecticidal investigations showed M. alpina and M. signyensis caused significant mortality of waxmoth and housefly larvae via injection and soil inoculation, and M. alpina caused significant mortality of housefly larvae via baiting; the Geomyces isolates had little lethal effect

    Combining electrical stimulation mediated by iterative learning control with movement practice using real objects and simulated tasks for post-stroke upper extremity rehabilitation.

    Objective: Task specific training and Electrical Stimulation (ES) are techniques used in rehabilitation of the upper extremity post stroke. This study describes the feasibility of using a rehabilitation system that combines personalised, precisely controlled levels of ES to the anterior deltoid, triceps and finger and wrist extensors during goal-oriented activity utilising real objects from daily life. Materials and Methods:Four chronic stroke participants undertook seventeen intervention sessions, each of one hour duration. During each session, particpants performed goal -orientated tasks while Iterative learning control (ILC) updated the ESsignal applied to each muscle group. The update was based on the difference between the ideal and actual movement in the previous attempt at the task, measured using Microsoft Kinect and PrimeSense sensors. The control system applied the minimum amount of ES required with a view to facilitating success at each given task while maximising voluntary effort. Results: Preliminary results demonstrate that ES mediated by ILC resulted in a statistically significant improvement in range of movement in all four joint angles studied (shoulder flexion; elbow, wrist and index finger extension) over 17 intervention sessions. Additionally, participants required signficantly less extrinsic support for each task. The tasks and system is described and initial intervention data are reported. Discussion: The feasibility of using this system for assisting upper limb movement has been demonstrated. A large scale pilot RCT is now required

    Optimisation of hand posture stimulation using an electrode array and iterative learning control.

    Nonlinear optimisation-based search algorithms have been developed for the precise stimulation of muscles in the wrist and hand, to enable stroke patients to attain predefined gestures. These have been integrated in a system comprising a 40 element surface electrode array that is placed on the forearm, an electrogoniometer and data glove supplying position data from 16 joint angles, and custom signal generation and switching hardware to route the electrical stimulation to individual array elements. The technology will be integrated in a upper limb rehabilitation system currently undergoing clinical trials to increase their ability to perform functional tasks requiring fine hand and finger movement. Initial performance results from unimpaired subjects show the successful reproduction of six reference hand postures using the system

    Bystander experiences of domestic violence and abuse during the COVID-19 pandemic

    This article seeks to understand the experiences of bystanders to domestic violence and abuse (DVA) during the COVID-19 pandemic in Wales. Globally, professionals voiced concern over the COVID-19 restrictions exacerbating conditions for DVA to occur. Yet evidence suggests this also increased opportunities for bystanders to become aware of DVA and take action against it. This mixed methods study consists of a quantitative online survey and follow-up interviews with survey respondents. Conducted in Wales, UK, during a national lockdown in 2021, this article reports on the experiences of 186 bystanders to DVA during the pandemic.Results suggest that bystanders had increased opportunity to become aware of DVA due to the pandemic restrictions. Results support the bystander situational model whereby respondents have to become aware of the behaviour, recognise it as a problem, feel that they possess the correct skills, and have confidence in their skills, before they will take action. Having received bystander training was a significant predictor variable in bystanders taking action against DVA; this is an important finding that should be utilised to upskill general members of the community

    Sustained impact of energy-dense TV and online food advertising on children\u27s dietary intake: a within-subject, randomised, crossover, counter-balanced trial

    Background Policies restricting children\u27s exposure to unhealthy food marketing have been impeded by the lack of evidence showing a direct link between food advertising exposure and children\u27s energy intake and body weight. Food advertising exposure increases children\u27s immediate food consumption, but whether this increased intake is compensated for at later eating occasions is not known; consequently the sustained effect on diets remains unclear. Methods We conducted a within-subject, randomised, crossover, counterbalanced study across four, six-day holiday camps in New South Wales, Australia between April 2016 and January 2017. Children (7-12 years, n = 160) were recruited via local schools, email networks and social media. Two gender- and age-balanced groups were formed for each camp (n = 20), randomised to either a multiple- or single- media condition and exposed to food and non-food advertising in an online game and/or a television cartoon. Children\u27s food consumption (kilojoules) was measured at a snack immediately after exposure and then at lunch later in the day. Linear mixed models were conducted to examine relationships between food advertising exposure and dietary intake, taking into account gender, age and weight status. Results All children in the multiple-media condition ate more at a snack after exposure to food advertising compared with non-food advertising; this was not compensated for at lunch, leading to additional daily food intake of 194 kJ (95% CI 80-308, p = 0.001, d = 0.2). Exposure to multiple-media food advertising compared with a single-media source increased the effect on snack intake by a difference of 182 kJ (95% CI 46-317, p = 0.009, d = 0.4). Food advertising had an increased effect among children with heavier weight status in both media groups. Conclusion Online (\u27advergame\u27) advertising combined with TV advertising exerted a stronger influence on children\u27s food consumption than TV advertising alone. The lack of compensation at lunch for children\u27s increased snack intake after food advertising exposure suggests that unhealthy food advertising exposure contributes to a positive energy-gap, which could cumulatively lead to the development of overweight

    Cognitive and behavioural strategies employed to overcome "lapses" and prevent "relapse" among weight-loss maintainers and regainers: A qualitative study.

    While many behavioural weight management programmes are effective in the short-term, post-programme weight regain is common. Overcoming "lapses" and preventing "relapse" has been highlighted as important in weight-loss maintenance, but little is known on how this is achieved. This study aimed to compare the cognitive and behavioural strategies employed to overcome "lapses" and prevent "relapse" by people who had regained weight or maintained weight-loss after participating in a weight management programme. By investigating differences between groups, we intended to identify strategies associated with better weight-loss maintenance. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 26 participants (58% female) recruited from the 5-year follow-up of the Weight Loss Referrals for Adults in Primary Care (WRAP) trial (evaluation of a commercial weight-loss programme). Participants who had lost ≥5% baseline weight during the active intervention were purposively sampled according to 5-year weight trajectories (n = 16 'Regainers', n = 10 'Maintainers'). Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed thematically. Key differences in strategies were that Maintainers continued to pay attention to their dietary intake, anticipated and planned for potential lapses in high-risk situations, and managed impulses using distraction techniques. Regainers did not report making plans, used relaxed dietary monitoring, found distraction techniques to be ineffective and appeared to have difficulty navigating food within interpersonal relationships. This study is one of the longest qualitative follow-ups of a weight loss trial to date, offering unique insights into long-term maintenance. Future programmes should emphasize strategies focusing on self-monitoring, planning and managing interpersonal relationships to help participants successfully maintain weight-loss in the longer-term.This study is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Programme Grants for Applied Research RP-PG-0216-20010.     Global biogeographic patterns of avian morphological diversity

    Understanding the biogeographical patterns, and evolutionary and environmental drivers, underpinning morphological diversity are key for determining its origins and conservation. Using a comprehensive set of continuous morphological traits extracted from museum collections of 8353 bird species, including geometric morphometric beak shape data, we find that avian morphological diversity is unevenly distributed globally, even after controlling for species richness, with exceptionally dense packing of species in hyper-diverse tropical hotspots. At the regional level, these areas also have high morphological variance, with species exhibiting high phenotypic diversity. Evolutionary history likely plays a key role in shaping these patterns, with evolutionarily old species contributing to niche expansion, and young species contributing to niche packing. Taken together, these results imply that the tropics are both ‘cradles’ and ‘museums’ of phenotypic diversity
