Top transport in electroweak baryogenesis
In non-supersymmetric models of electroweak baryogenesis the top quark plays
a crucial role. Its CP-violating source term can be calculated in the WKB
approximation. We point out how to resolve certain discrepancies between
computations starting from the Dirac equation and the Schwinger--Keldysh
formalism. We also improve on the transport equations, keeping the
W-scatterings at finite rate. We apply these results to a model with one Higgs
doublet, augmented by dimension-6 operators, where our refinements lead to an
increase in the baryon asymmetry by a factor of up to about 5.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, references adde
Is U3Ni3Sn4 best described as near a quantum critical point?
Although most known non-Fermi liquid (NFL) materials are structurally or
chemically disordered, the role of this disorder remains unclear. In
particular, very few systems have been discovered that may be stoichiometric
and well ordered. To test whether U3Ni3Sn4 belongs in this latter class, we
present measurements of the x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) of
polycrystalline and single-crystal U3Ni3Sn4 samples that are consistent with no
measurable local structural disorder. We also present temperature-dependent
specific heat data in applied magnetic fields as high as 8 T that show features
that are inconsistent with the antiferromagnetic Griffiths' phase model, but do
support the conclusion that a Fermi liquid/NFL crossover temperature increases
with applied field. These results are inconsistent with theoretical
explanations that require strong disorder effects, but do support the view that
U3Ni3Sn4 is a stoichiometric, ordered material that exhibits NFL behavior, and
is best described as being near an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, in press with PR
High temperature thermal conductivity of 2-leg spin-1/2 ladders
Based on numerical simulations, a study of the high temperature, finite
frequency, thermal conductivity of spin-1/2 ladders is
presented. The exact diagonalization and a novel Lanczos technique are
employed.The conductivity spectra, analyzed as a function of rung coupling,
point to a non-diverging limit but to an unconventional low frequency
behavior. The results are discussed with perspective recent experiments
indicating a significant magnetic contribution to the energy transport in

Effects of BMI on bone loading due to physical activity
The aim of the current study was to compare bone loading due to physical activity between lean and, overweight and obese individuals. Fifteen participants (lower BMI group: BMI<25 kg/m2, n=7; higher BMI group: 25 kg/m2 < BMI < 36.35 kg/m2, n=8) wore a tri-axial accelerometer on one day to collect data for the calculation of bone loading. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (short form) was used to measure time spent at different physical activity levels. Daily step counts were measured using a pedometer. Differences between groups were compared using independent t-tests. Accelerometer data revealed greater loading dose at the hip in lower BMI participants at a frequency band of 0.1–2 Hz (P=.039, Cohen‘s d =1.27) and 2–4 Hz (P=.044, d =1.24). Lower BMI participants also had a significantly greater step count (P=.023, d =1.55). This corroborated with loading intensity (d ≥ 0.93) and questionnaire (d =0.79) effect sizes to indicate higher BMI participants tended to spend more time in very light, and less time in light and moderate activity. Overall participants with a lower BMI exhibited greater bone loading due to physical activity; participants with a higher BMI may benefit from more light and moderate level activity to maintain bone health.Kellogg’s Compan
Perspectives on the Missiological Legacy of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation
Upon the occasion of the 500th anniversary Martin Luther’s publication of his 95 theses, this composite article brings together five perspectives on the missiological legacy of the reformer and the subsequent Protestant Reformation. The blend of voices makes clear that Luther and the subsequent Protestant Reformation do not have a simple missiological legacy but rather various legacies: theological, ecclesiological, political, and practical; some of which co-exist, and even collide, in the same ecclesiastical community. The scandalous legacy of a splintered and splintering church remains. Yet, demonstrations of mutual recognition, reciprocal respect, and genuine fellowship can be found in certain missiological circles
Watching the birth of a charge density wave order: diffraction study on nanometer-and picosecond-scales
Femtosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction is used to study a photo-induced
phase transition between two charge density wave (CDW) states in 1T-TaS,
namely the nearly commensurate (NC) and the incommensurate (I) CDW states.
Structural modulations associated with the NC-CDW order are found to disappear
within 400 fs. The photo-induced I-CDW phase then develops through a
nucleation/growth process which ends 100 ps after laser excitation. We
demonstrate that the newly formed I-CDW phase is fragmented into several
nanometric domains that are growing through a coarsening process. The
coarsening dynamics is found to follow the universal Lifshitz-Allen-Cahn growth
law, which describes the ordering kinetics in systems exhibiting a

The macroeconomic effects of international uncertainty shocks
We propose a large-scale Bayesian VAR model with factor stochastic volatility to investigate the macroeconomic consequences of international uncertainty shocks on the G7 countries. The factor structure enables us to identify an international uncertainty shock by assuming that it is the factor most correlated with forecast errors related to equity markets and permits fast sampling of the model. Our findings suggest that the estimated uncertainty factor is strongly related to global equity price volatility, closely tracking other prominent measures commonly adopted to assess global uncertainty. The dynamic responses of a set of macroeconomic and financial variables show that an international uncertainty shock exerts a powerful effect on all economies and variables under consideration
