    The Rhetoric of Exile in the Preaching and Teaching of the Anglo-Saxon Church: Glimpses of the Cultural Ideology in Old English Homilies

    Abstract. This article explores how the early medieval vernacular homiletic discourse produced in Anglo-Saxon England strategically employs the rhetoric exile, a theme whose significance is also articulated widely in Old English poetry. As words denoting such similar ideas as exile, banishment, exclusion, casting/driving out, etc., recur significantly in the homilies of the Anglo-Saxon Church, including the homilies of Ælfric, Wulfstan, and the Blickling and Vercelli Codices, I propose an analysis of the instances in which the rhetoric about exile is used in preaching and theology in order to reveal not only the Church authors/teachers’ ability and effort to translate Latin and to disseminate complex theological ideas in their vernacular tongue, but also certain aspects of the broader cultural ideology in the culture of Anglo-Saxon England

    Separation Enhancement of Mechanical Filters by Adding Negative Air Ions

    The purpose of this work is to combine negative air ions (NAIs) and mechanical filters for removal of indoor suspended particulates. Various factors, including aerosol size (0.05-0.45 Οm), face velocity (10 and 20 cm/s), species of aerosol (potassium chloride and dioctyl phthalate), relative humidity (30% and 70%), and concentrations of NAIs (2 ´ 104, 1 ´ 105, and 2 ´ 105 NAIs/cm3) were considered to evaluate their effects on the aerosol collection characteristics of filters. Results show that the aerosol penetration through the mechanical filter is higher than that through the mechanical filters cooperated with NAIs. This finding implies that the aerosol removal efficiency of mechanical filters can be improved by NAIs. Furthermore, the aerosol penetration through the mechanical filters increased with the aerosol size when NAIs were added. That is due to that the aerosol is easier to be charged when its size gets larger. The results also indicate the aerosol penetration decreased with the NAIs concentration increased. Reversely, aerosol penetration through the mechanical filters increased with the face velocity under the influence of NAIs. The aerosol penetration through the filter with NAIs was no affected with relative humidity. Finally, The penetration through the filter with NAIs against solid aerosol was lower than that against liquid aerosol

    Copper-catalyzed C–S bond formation between aldehydes and thiols in the presence of TBHP as an oxidant is described. Functional groups including chloro, trifluoromethyl, bromo, iodo, nitrile, ester and thiophene are all tolerated by the reaction conditions employed. This reaction is performed in water without the use of a surfactant. Both aryl and alkyl aldehydes couple suitably with aryl- and alkyl thiols, affording the corresponding thioesters in moderate to good yields

    Boosting Factual Consistency and High Coverage in Unsupervised Abstractive Summarization

    Abstractive summarization has gained attention because of the positive performance of large-scale, pretrained language models. However, models may generate a summary that contains information different from the original document. This phenomenon is particularly critical under the abstractive methods and is known as factual inconsistency. This study proposes an unsupervised abstractive method for improving factual consistency and coverage by adopting reinforcement learning. The proposed framework includes (1) a novel design to maintain factual consistency with an automatic question-answering process between the generated summary and original document, and (2) a novel method of ranking keywords based on word dependency, where keywords are used to examine the coverage of the key information preserved in the summary. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the reinforcement learning baseline on both the evaluations for factual consistency and coverage

    Qubit Mapping Toward Quantum Advantage

    Qubit Mapping is a pivotal stage in quantum compilation flow. Its goal is to convert logical circuits into physical circuits so that a quantum algorithm can be executed on real-world non-fully connected quantum devices. Qubit Mapping techniques nowadays still lack the key to quantum advantage, scalability. Several studies have proved that at least thousands of logical qubits are required to achieve quantum computational advantage. However, to our best knowledge, there is no previous research with the ability to solve the qubit mapping problem with the necessary number of qubits for quantum advantage in a reasonable time. In this work, we provide the first qubit mapping framework with the scalability to achieve quantum advantage while accomplishing a fairly good performance. The framework also boasts its flexibility for quantum circuits of different characteristics. Experimental results show that the proposed mapping method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on quantum circuit benchmarks by improving over 5% of the cost complexity in one-tenth of the program running time. Moreover, we demonstrate the scalability of our method by accomplishing mapping of an 11,969-qubit Quantum Fourier Transform within five hours

    TNFAIP3, a negative regulator of the TLR signaling pathway, is a potential predictive biomarker of response to antidepressant treatment in major depressive disorder

    AbstractInflammation and abnormalities in Toll-like receptor (TLR) expression and activation have been linked to major depressive disorder (MDD). However, negative regulators of TLR pathways have not been previously investigated in this context. Here, we sought to investigate the association of depression severity, measured by the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17), with mRNA expression levels of negative regulators of the TLR pathway, including SOCS1, TOLLIP, SIGIRR, MyD88s, NOD2 and TNFAIP3, in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from 100 patients with MDD and 53 healthy controls, before and after treatment with antidepressants. Positive regulators of the TLR4 pathway, including Pellino 1, TRAF6 and IRAK1, were also investigated. Among all patients, MyD88s, and TNFAIP3 mRNAs were expressed at lower levels in PBMCs from patients with MDD. Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that TNFAIP3 mRNA expression before treatment was inversely correlated with severity of depression and effectively predicted improvement in HAMD-17 scores. Among 79 treatment-completers, only TNFAIP3 mRNA was significantly increased by treatment with antidepressants for 4 weeks. Treatment of human monocytes (THP-1) and mouse microglia (SIM-A9) cell lines with fluoxetine significantly increased TNFAIP3 mRNA expression and suppressed IL-6 levels. The suppressive effect of fluoxetine on IL-6 was attenuated by knockdown of TNFAIP3 expression. These findings suggest that both dysfunction of the negative regulatory system in patients with MDD and antidepressant treatment exert anti-inflammatory effects, at least in part through increased expression of the TNFAIP3 gene. They also indicate that modulating expression of the TNFAIP3 gene to rebalance TLR-mediated inflammatory signaling may be potential therapeutic strategy for treating MDD
