    The cell membrane is an organized and fluid structure that modulates cellular activities in response to specific extracellular signals, and maintains the critical communication, integration, and homeostasis between the cytosol and the extracellular matrix (ECM). In recent years, tissue engineering and cell biology research has been rapidly progressed by a remarkable understanding of cell and ECM interfaces. In this review, the design of new biomimetic platforms based on the conjugation of ECM proteins on solid supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) will be summarized. The platforms provide a better system to evaluate cellular responses to specific recognition events, gradient, mechanical property, nanostructures, and inter- and intra-molecular interactions of ECM proteins on a non-fouling and fluid membrane. Moreover, the findings from the molecular interactions and cellular activities will be highlighted to look into the cell-materials mechanisms

    Typically, hardware devices, such as networking devices, include status indicators that display the status of ports and other elements related to the device. Each status indicator includes a status light that is carried by a plastic tube or pipe. Large amounts of plastic are typically involved in the manufacture of port status plastic tubes for networking devices worldwide. Techniques described herein provide for a universal status light that can be provided for networking devices in which the universal status light provides for merging port status indicators and general status indicators into a single status indicator, which may help to reduce plastic consumption and CO2 emissions

    FFTPL: An Analytic Placement Algorithm Using Fast Fourier Transform for Density Equalization

    We propose a flat nonlinear placement algorithm FFTPL using fast Fourier transform for density equalization. The placement instance is modeled as an electrostatic system with the analogy of density cost to the potential energy. A well-defined Poisson's equation is proposed for gradient and cost computation. Our placer outperforms state-of-the-art placers with better solution quality and efficiency

    Using optical code-division multiple-access techniques in Michelson interferometer vibration sensor networks

    This study proposes a spectral-amplitude-coding optical code-division multiple-access (SAC-OCDMA) framework for accessing the vibration frequency of a test object by using a Michelson interferometer vibration sensor (MIVS). Each sensor node possesses an individual signature codeword, and liquid crystal spatial light modulator (LC-SLM) encoders/decoders (codecs) are adopted to provide excellent orthogonal properties in the frequency domain. The proposed LC-SLM-based OCDMA system mitigates multiple access interference among all sensor nodes. When optical beams strike and are reflected by the object, the sensing interferometer becomes sensitive to external physical parameters such as temperature, strain, and vibration. The MIVS includes a Michelson interferometer placed at a specific distance from the test object on a designed vibration platform. A balanced photodetector (BPD) was used to convert the light output of the LC-SLM decoders into electrical signals, and a digitizing oscilloscope was used to Fourier transform the BPD electrical signal output, thereby yielding the vibration frequency of the test object. The results showed that the proposed sensor network with an interferometer can be used as a distributed highly sensitive sensor to obtain mechanical values. This study provides a new optical sensor network for current vibration frequency measurements

    A SEEMINGLY UNRELETED REGRESSION ANALYSIS ON THE TRADING BEHAVIOR OF MUTUAL FUND INVESTORS

    This paper provides a comprehensive investigation on the causality relationship between fund performance and trading flows. We analyze if investors behave asymmetrically in fund purchasing and selling by seemingly unrelated regression which comprises several individual relationships that are linked by the fact that their disturbances or the error terms are correlated. The empirical result shows a significantly negative relationship between fund performance and purchase flows for domestic funds. The magnitude of domestic funds redemption negatively affects current return, but not for international funds. As previousfund return positively affects current net flows,the further lagged performances have no significant impact on the trading flows, revealing that fund investors are sensitive only to short-term past performance. Most importantly, while negative fund performance leads to the increases in redemption, positive performance contrarily leads to the decreases in purchase. The evidences strongly indicate an asymmetry behavior of fund investors in the return-purchase causality relations

    Improvement of n-butanol tolerance in Escherichia coli by membrane-targeted tilapia metallothionein

    Background: Though n-butanol has been proposed as a potential transportation biofuel, its toxicity oftencauses oxidative stress in the host microorganism and is considered one of the bottlenecks preventing itsefficient mass production.Results: To relieve the oxidative stress in the host cell, metallothioneins (MTs), which are known as scavengersfor reactive oxygen species (ROS), were engineered in E. coli hosts for both cytosolic and outer-membrane-targeted (osmoregulatory membrane protein OmpC fused) expression. Metallothioneins from human (HMT),mouse (MMT), and tilapia fish (TMT) were tested. The host strain expressing membrane-targeted TMT showed thegreatest ability to reduce oxidative stresses induced by n-butanol, ethanol, furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural, andnickel. The same strain also allowed for an increased growth rate of recombinant E. coli under n-butanol stress.Further experiments indicated that the TMT-fused OmpC protein could not only function in ROS scavenging butalso regulate either glycine betaine (GB) or glucose uptake via osmosis, and the dual functional fusion proteincould contribute in an enhancement of the host microorganism’s growth rate.Conclusions: The abilities of scavenging intracellular or extracellular ROS by these engineering E. coli wereexamined, and TMT show the best ability among three MTs. Additionally, the membrane-targeted fusion protein,OmpC-TMT, improved host tolerance up to 1.5% n-butanol above that of TMT which is only 1%. These resultspresented indicate potential novel approaches for engineering stress tolerant microorganism strains

    Control of the nanoscale crystallinity and phase separation in polymer solar cells

    Grazing-incidence x-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy were performed on bulk heterojunction regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (RR-P3HT) [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl esters spin-cast films with different film processing conditions to correlate the crystalline nanostructure of P3HT with the corresponding solar cell performance. The increase in long wavelength absorption for solvent annealed films is related to highly conjugated crystal structure of RR-P3HT phase-separated in the active layer. Upon thermal annealing, the solvent annealed 50-nm-thick device shows high solar cell performance with fill factor up to 73% and power conversion efficiency of 3.80%
