    Volatility of the Utilities Industry: Its Causal Relationship to Other Nine Industries

    The goal of this study is to investigate the causality relationship between the Utilities industry and the nine other industries. Previous literatures show that volatility of stock prices is informative; Granger causality is applied in this research by using of a leveraged bootstrap test developed by Hacker and Hatemi-J (2006) to examine the behavior of the volatility. The results indicate that causality of the volatility of the Utilities industry on the volatility of seven other industries, except the Information Technology and Telecommunication Services industries. The data also suggest that Financials industry has impact on the Utilities industry

    Liquefaction Assessment and Lateral Spreading in Nantou, Taiwan

    On September 21, 1999, Taiwan was struck by an earthquake, called Chi-Chi earthquake, one of the largest in 100 years. The epicenter was located 12.5 km west of the Sun Moon Lake (Northern Latitude 23.85Ā°) Eastern Longitude 120.78Ā°), with focal depth of 8 km, and magnitude of Mw=7.6 (USGS). This earthquake caused heavy casualties and severe property damages around central Taiwan. It was found that this earthquake resulted in sand boiling, differential settlement on the ground and lateral spreading around part of the Maolou River bank in Nantou City. Field investigation, geological exploration and in situ tests, which include 14 borings with standard penetration tests and 8 cone penetration test soundings, were conducted to demonstrate the soil profiles and to perform soil liquefaction potential assessment. The ground failure due to spreading liquefaction near Maolou River bank was also described. The result revealed that soils about 5-8 meters below the ground surface contains fine to medium silty sand or sandy silt which is the same strata as the highest liquefaction potential based on SPT-N and CPT-qc liquefaction simplified procedures. It is also shown that the critical depth also has the physical properties similar to the boiled sand taken from the sand volcanoes

    Models of pre-service teachers' academic achievement: The influence of cognitive motivational variables

    Theoretical models were tested using structural equation modeling to evaluate the interrelations among cognitive motivational variables and academic achievement using a sample of 128 predominately Hispanic pre-service teachers enrolled in two undergraduate educational psychology classes. Data were gathered using: (1) a quantitative questionnaire to assess personal control, internal causality, self-efficacy, mastery goal orientation, and final course grade and (2) a problem-solving activity to identify engagement style: action- or process-oriented. The proposed theoretical model produced a poor model fit and thus a modified model was forwarded that directly linked self-efficacy with final course grade rather then mediated by mastery goal orientation. Results supported the modified model and suggested that the cognitive motivational variables under investigation played important roles in predicting studentsā€™ grades, with self-efficacy acting as the mediator between both internal causality and personal control and studentsā€™ final course grade. This study also demonstrated that the modified model was relatively invariant across gender, ethnicity, and engagement style. Implications for both teacher educators and teachers for understanding the complex links between cognitive motivational variables and academic achievement with a predominately Hispanic sample are discussed

    Association Between Platelet Count and Components of Metabolic Syndrome in Geriatric Taiwanese Women

    SummaryBackgroundThe growing elderly population in Taiwan, as in many other countries, has resulted in increased importance of the metabolic syndrome (MetS). Although it has been reported in different age groups, the relationship between platelets and MetS remains unknown in geriatric patients.Patients and MethodsWe enrolled 1460 women >65 years old. Women with a known history of diabetes, hyperlipidemia or hypertension or those taking medication for these conditions were all excluded. The women were further divided into quartiles arbitrarily according to platelet count (PC) (PC1ā€“PC4, lowest to highest accordingly).ResultsAmong the MetS components, body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and log transformation triglyceride (Log TG) were all significantly higher in the PC4 group (pĀ <Ā 0.05), and they were also positively correlated with PC. However, in multiple regression, BMI became nonsignificant. Both LDL-C and Log TG were the only two factors that remained positively and independently correlated with PC. Compared to PC1, all the other three groups had significantly higher odds ratios for having MetS (2.013, 1.473ā€“2.751; 1.486, 1.081ā€“2.042; 1.537, 1.117ā€“2.114; odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for PC4, PC3 and PC2, respectively).ConclusionElderly women with MetS had higher PC. Among the five components, TG was positively correlated with PC. There was a positive correlation between PC and LDL-C but not high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The importance of both lipids might be re-evaluated in the future in older women

Stakeholder perspectives are important and include parental ethno-theories, which embrace views about many aspects of speech, language and communication, language development, and interventions. The Developmental Niche Framework provides a useful theory to understand parental beliefs. Ethnotheories, including those about language development, delay and interventions, may vary cross culturally and are less well understood in relation to families who may be considered ā€˜under-servedā€™ or ā€˜hard-to-reachā€™ by speech and language therapy services.     Bilateral Assessment of Functional Tasks for Robot-assisted Therapy Applications

    This article presents a novel evaluation system along with methods to evaluate bilateral coordination of arm function on activities of daily living tasks before and after robot-assisted therapy. An affordable bilateral assessment system (BiAS) consisting of two mini-passive measuring units modeled as three degree of freedom robots is described. The process for evaluating functional tasks using the BiAS is presented and we demonstrate its ability to measure wrist kinematic trajectories. Three metrics, phase difference, movement overlap, and task completion time, are used to evaluate the BiAS system on a bilateral symmetric (bi-drink) and a bilateral asymmetric (bi-pour) functional task. Wrist position and velocity trajectories are evaluated using these metrics to provide insight into temporal and spatial bilateral deficits after stroke. The BiAS system quantified movements of the wrists during functional tasks and detected differences in impaired and unimpaired arm movements. Case studies showed that stroke patients compared to healthy subjects move slower and are less likely to use their arm simultaneously even when the functional task requires simultaneous movement. After robot-assisted therapy, interlimb coordination spatial deficits moved toward normal coordination on functional tasks

    COSMOS2020: Exploring the dawn of quenching for massive galaxies at 3 < z < 5 with a new colour selection method

    We select and characterise a sample of massive (log(Māˆ—/_{*}/MāŠ™)>10.6_{\odot})>10.6) quiescent galaxies (QGs) at 3<z<53<z<5 in the latest COSMOS2020 catalogue. QGs are selected using a new rest-frame colour selection method, based on their probability of belonging to the quiescent group defined by a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) trained on rest-frame colours (NUVāˆ’U,Uāˆ’V,Vāˆ’JNUV-U, U-V, V-J) of similarly massive galaxies at 2<z<32<z<3. We calculate the quiescent probability threshold above which a galaxy is classified as quiescent using simulated galaxies from the SHARK semi-analytical model. We find that at zā‰„3z\geq3 in SHARK, the GMM/NUVUāˆ’VJNUVU-VJ method out-performs classical rest-frame UVJUVJ selection and is a viable alternative. We select galaxies as quiescent based on their probability in COSMOS2020 at 3<z<53<z<5, and compare the selected sample to both UVJUVJ and NUVrJNUVrJ selected samples. We find that although the new selection matches UVJUVJ and NUVrJNUVrJ in number, the overlap between colour selections is only āˆ¼50āˆ’80%\sim50-80\%, implying that rest-frame colour commonly used at lower redshifts selections cannot be equivalently used at z>3z>3. We compute median rest-frame SEDs for our sample and find the median quiescent galaxy at 3<z<53<z<5 has a strong Balmer/4000 Angstrom break, and residual NUVNUV flux indicating recent quenching. We find the number densities of the entire quiescent population (including post-starbursts) more than doubles from 3.5Ā±2.2Ɨ10āˆ’63.5\pm2.2\times10^{-6} Mpcāˆ’3^{-3} at 4<z<54<z<5 to 1.4Ā±0.4Ɨ10āˆ’51.4\pm0.4\times10^{-5} Mpcāˆ’3^{-3} at 3<z<43<z<4, confirming that the onset of massive galaxy quenching occurs as early as 3<z<53<z<5.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures + appendix.     PET/CT Imaging of Zr-89-N-sucDf-Pembrolizumab in Healthy Cynomolgus Monkeys

    PURPOSE: Programmed cell death-1 receptor (PD-1) and its ligand (PD-L1) are the targets for immunotherapy in many cancer types. Although PD-1 blockade has therapeutic effects, the efficacy differs between patients. Factors contributing to this variability are PD-L1 expression levels and immune cells present in tumors. However, it is not well understood how PD-1 expression in the tumor microenvironment impacts immunotherapy response. Thus, imaging of PD-1-expressing immune cells is of interest. This study aims to evaluate the biodistribution of Zirconium-89 (89Zr)-labeled pembrolizumab, a humanized IgG4 kappa monoclonal antibody targeting PD-1, in healthy cynomolgus monkeys as a translational model of tracking PD-1-positive immune cells. PROCEDURES: Pembrolizumab was conjugated with the tetrafluorophenol-N-succinyl desferal-Fe(III) ester (TFP-N-sucDf) and subsequently radiolabeled with 89Zr. Four cynomolgus monkeys with no previous exposure to humanized monoclonal antibodies received tracer only or tracer co-injected with pembrolizumab intravenously over 5 min. Thereafter, a static whole-body positron emission tomography (PET) scan was acquired with 10 min per bed position on days 0, 2, 5, and 7. Image-derived standardized uptake values (SUVmean) were quantified by region of interest (ROI) analysis. RESULTS: 89Zr-N-sucDf-pembrolizumab was synthesized with high radiochemical purity (>ā€‰99 %) and acceptable molar activity (>ā€‰7 MBq/nmol). In animals dosed with tracer only, 89Zr-N-sucDf-pembrolizumab distribution in lymphoid tissues such as mesenteric lymph nodes, spleen, and tonsils increased over time. Except for the liver, low radiotracer distribution was observed in all non-lymphoid tissue including the lung, muscle, brain, heart, and kidney. When a large excess of pembrolizumab was co-administered with a radiotracer, accumulation in the lymph nodes, spleen, and tonsils was reduced, suggestive of target-mediated accumulation. CONCLUSIONS: 89Zr-N-sucDf-pembrolizumab shows preferential uptake in the lymphoid tissues including the lymph nodes, spleen, and tonsils. 89Zr-N-sucDf-pembrolizumab may be useful in tracking the distribution of a subset of immune cells in non-human primates and humans.
