Advanced supersonic propulsion study, phase 3
The variable stream control engine is determined to be the most promising propulsion system concept for advanced supersonic cruise aircraft. This concept uses variable geometry components and a unique throttle schedule for independent control of two flow streams to provide low jet noise at takeoff and high performance at both subsonic and supersonic cruise. The advanced technology offers a 25% improvement in airplane range and an 8 decibel reduction in takeoff noise, relative to first generation supersonic turbojet engines
On the direct indecomposability of infinite irreducible Coxeter groups and the Isomorphism Problem of Coxeter groups
In this paper we prove, without the finite rank assumption, that any
irreducible Coxeter group of infinite order is directly indecomposable as an
abstract group. The key ingredient of the proof is that we can determine, for
an irreducible Coxeter group, the centralizers of the normal subgroups that are
generated by involutions. As a consequence, we show that the problem of
deciding whether two general Coxeter groups are isomorphic, as abstract groups,
is reduced to the case of irreducible Coxeter groups, without assuming the
finiteness of the number of the irreducible components or their ranks. We also
give a description of the automorphism group of a general Coxeter group in
terms of those of its irreducible components.Comment: 30 page
The left atrial appendage in health and disease
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the commonest sustained cardiac arrhythmiaand results in significant morbidity and mortality. The left atrial appendage (LAA), a small embryonic remnant of the left atrium (LA), has been shown to play a key role in the pathophysiology of AF-related stroke and thromboembolism. As a consequence the LAA, in spite of its meagre size, has been described as ‘our most lethal human attachment’. Despite being a recognised harbinger of disease, the LAA has also been shown to play an important role in health. This review seeks to address our current understanding of this vital structure in both health and disease states
A nod in the wrong direction : Does nonverbal feedback affect eyewitness confidence in interviews?
Eyewitnesses can be influenced by an interviewer's behaviour and report information with inflated confidence as a result. Previous research has shown that positive feedback administered verbally can affect the confidence attributed to testimony, but the effect of non-verbal influence in interviews has been given little attention. This study investigated whether positive or negative non-verbal feedback could affect the confidence witnesses attribute to their responses. Participants witnessed staged CCTV footage of a crime scene and answered 20 questions in a structured interview, during which they were given either positive feedback (a head nod), negative feedback (a head shake) or no feedback. Those presented with positive non-verbal feedback reported inflated confidence compared with those presented with negative non-verbal feedback regardless of accuracy, and this effect was most apparent when participants reported awareness of the feedback. Conditional value-at-risk for water management in Lake Burley Griffin
Copyright © Australian Mathematical SocietyAs the centrepiece of Canberra, Lake Burley Griffin provides the setting for buildings of national importance and a venue for aquatic recreation while, as part of the Molonglo River, the lake has a role in the ecological processes of its broader setting. For the purposes of recreation and landscape a constant water level is preferred: the management plan requires the lake to be maintained at a prescribed normal level. In years of low rainfall this requirement could conflict with the water demands of other users. Episodes of high rainfall may also require compromise between competing objectives. For example, drawdown of lake levels for flood mitigation could impact on the lake's recreational and amenity values and the spill may not be a good use of water. Conditional Value at Risk, a risk measure developed by the financial industry for portfolio management, is defined as the expected loss given that some loss threshold is exceeded. The clustering of galaxies in the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: mock galaxy catalogues for the low-redshift sample
We present one thousand mock galaxy catalogues for the analysis of the Low
Redshift Sample (LOWZ, effective redshift z ~ 10.32) of the Baryon Oscillation
Spectroscopic Survey Data Releases 10 and 11. These mocks have been created
following the PTHalos method of Manera13 et al. (2013) revised to include new
developments. The main improvement is the introduction of a redshift dependence
in the Halo Occupation Distribution in order to account for the change of the
galaxy number density with redshift. These mock catalogues are used in the
analyses of the LOWZ galaxy clustering by the BOSS collaboration.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
G343.1-2.3 and PSR 1706-44
The association of G343.1-2.3 and PSR 1706-44 has been controversial from its first proposal. In this paper we present new evidence from images made by with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), MRT and Mt. Pleasant. To cover the full extent of G343.1-2.3 with ATCA mosaicing was required, and we present the polarisation images from this experiment. The ATCA observations confirms the much larger extent of the SNR, which now encompasses the pulsar
N-methyl-N-alkylpyrrolidinium nonafluoro-1-butanesulfonate salts : Ionic liquid properties and plastic crystal behaviour
A series of N-methyl-N-alkylpyrrolidinium nonafluoro-1-butanesulfonate salts were synthesised and characterised. The thermophysical characteristics of this family of salts have been investigated with respect to potential use as ionic liquids and solid electrolytes. N-Methyl-N-butylpyrrolidinium nonafluoro-1-butanesulfonate (p1,4NfO) has the lowest melting point of the family, at 94 °C. Electrochemical analysis of p1,4 NfO in the liquid state shows an electrochemical window of ~6 V. All compounds exhibit one or more solid–solid transitions at sub-ambient temperatures, indicating the existence of plastic crystal phases.<br /
