Soot formation and burnout in flames
The amount of soot formed when burning a benzene/hexane mixture in a turbulent combustor was examined. Soot concentration profiles in the same combustor for kerosene fuel are given. The chemistry of the formation of soot precursors, the nucleation, growth and subsequent burnout of soot particles, and the effect of mixing on the previous steps were considered
Non-local fluctuation correlations in active gels
Many active materials and biological systems are driven far from equilibrium
by embedded agents that spontaneously generate forces and distort the
surrounding material. Probing and characterizing these athermal fluctuations is
essential for understanding the properties and behaviors of such systems. Here
we present a mathematical procedure to estimate the local action of
force-generating agents from the observed fluctuating displacement fields. The
active agents are modeled as oriented force dipoles or isotropic compression
foci, and the matrix on which they act is assumed to be either a compressible
elastic continuum or a coupled network-solvent system. Correlations at a single
point and between points separated by an arbitrary distance are obtained,
giving a total of three independent fluctuation modes that can be tested with
microrheology experiments. Since oriented dipoles and isotropic compression
foci give different contributions to these fluctuation modes, ratiometric
analysis allows us characterize the force generators. We also predict and
experimentally find a high-frequency ballistic regime, arising from individual
force generating events in the form of the slow build-up of stress followed by
rapid but finite decay. Finally, we provide a quantitative statistical model to
estimate the mean filament tension from these athermal fluctuations, which

Relaxation time of the topological T1 process in a two-dimensional foam
The elementary topological T1 process in a two-dimensional foam corresponds
to the "flip" of one soap film with respect to the geometrical constraints.
From a mechanical point of view, this T1 process is an elementary relaxation
process through which the entire structure of an out-of-equilibrium foam
evolves. The dynamics of this elementary relaxation process has been poorly
investigated and is generally neglected during simulations of foams. We study
both experimentally and theoretically the T1 dynamics in a dry two-dimensional
foam. We show that the dynamics is controlled by the surface viscoelastic
properties of the soap films (surface shear plus dilatational viscosity, ms+k,
and Gibbs elasticity e), and is independent of the shear viscosity of the bulk
liquid. Moreover, our approach illustrates that the dynamics of T1 relaxation
process provides a convenient tool for measuring the surface rheological
properties: we obtained e = 32+/-8 mN/m and ms+k = 1.3+/-0.7 mPa.m.s for SDS,
and e = 65+/-12 mN/m and ms+k = 31+/-12 mPa.m.s for BSA, in good agreement with
values reported in the literature
Transport of Single Molecules Along the Periodic Parallel Lattices with Coupling
General discrete one-dimensional stochastic models to describe the transport
of single molecules along coupled parallel lattices with period are
developed. Theoretical analysis that allows to calculate explicitly the
steady-state dynamic properties of single molecules, such as mean velocity
and dispersion , is presented for N=1 and N=2 models. For the systems with
exact analytic expressions for the large-time dynamic properties are
obtained in the limit of strong coupling between the lattices that leads to
dynamic equilibrium between two parallel kinetic pathways.Comment: Submitted to J. Chem. Phy

The MOSS camera on H-1NF
We have configured the modulated optical solid-state spectrometer, a recently developed high-resolution instrument for plasma Dopplerspectroscopy, as an imaging spectroscopiccamera. The camera features a wide field of view (∼10°), large aperture (40 mm), and high spectral resolution ν/Δν greater than 10 000. The camera installation on the H-1NF Heliac is described, together with the steps in the design process, including field widening. Calibration and characterization of the instrument function is discussed and the instrument performance is illustrated with some sample results of spatially resolved ion temperature measurements in H-1NF
Nematic and Polar order in Active Filament Solutions
Using a microscopic model of interacting polar biofilaments and motor
proteins, we characterize the phase diagram of both homogeneous and
inhomogeneous states in terms of experimental parameters. The polarity of motor
clusters is key in determining the organization of the filaments in homogeneous
isotropic, polarized and nematic states, while motor-induced bundling yields

Alpha/beta and gamma interferons are induced by infection with noncytopathic bovine viral diarrhea virus in vivo
In contrast to the results of previous in vitro studies, experimental infection of calves with noncytopathic bovine viral diarrhea virus (ncpBVDV) was found to induce strong alpha/beta and gamma interferon responses in gnotobiotic animals. These responses were associated with depressed levels of transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) in serum. The results of this study indicate that the immunosuppression caused by ncpBVDV is not associated with low interferon responses or elevated levels of TGF-β
Comprehensive Observations of a Solar Minimum CME with STEREO
We perform the first kinematic analysis of a CME observed by both imaging and
in situ instruments on board STEREO, namely the SECCHI, PLASTIC, and IMPACT
experiments. Launched on 2008 February 4, the CME is tracked continuously from
initiation to 1 AU using the SECCHI imagers on both STEREO spacecraft, and is
then detected by the PLASTIC and IMPACT particle and field detectors on board
STEREO-B. The CME is also detected in situ by ACE and SOHO/CELIAS at Earth's L1
Lagrangian point. The CME hits STEREO-B, ACE, and SOHO on 2008 February 7, but
misses STEREO-A entirely. This event provides a good example of just how
different the same event can look when viewed from different perspectives. We
also demonstrate many ways in which the comprehensive and continuous coverage
of this CME by STEREO improves confidence in our assessment of its kinematic
behavior, with potential ramifications for space weather forecasting. The
observations provide several lines of evidence in favor of the observable part
of the CME being narrow in angular extent, a determination crucial for deciding
how best to convert observed CME elongation angles from Sun-center to actual

The interaction of unidirectional winds with an isolated barchan sand dune
Velocity profile measurements are determined on and around a barchan dune model inserted in the roughness layer on the tunnel floor. A theoretical investigation is made into the factors influencing the rate of sand flow around the dune. Flow visualization techniques are employed in the mapping of streamlines of flow on the dune's surface. Maps of erosion and deposition of sand are constructed for the barchan model, utilizing both flow visualization techniques and friction velocities calculated from the measured velocity profiles. The sediment budget found experimentally for the model is compared to predicted and observed results reported. The comparison shows fairly good agreement between the experimentally determined and predicted sediment budgets
