Specifically, it examines how the distribution and circulation of breeds of livestock native to the British Isles influenced understandings of kind and location-of the dynamic interaction between heredity, human influence and environmental conditions, and their various fluid effects on ovine and bovine diversity. Drawing on extensive archival work in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Australia, I trace both the national origins and imperial expansion of British breeds. As Britain industrialized in the early nineteenth century, breeders faced the need to convert the specificity of their animals into fungibility while maintaining the distinctive character of their breeds, seemingly incompatible aims that nonetheless guaranteed the economic viability of their stock. Thus they reoriented local variability towards market standardization, transforming regional types of cattle and sheep into geographically transposable, bulky, and quick-fattening beasts suited for increasingly sophisticated economies and industrialized production. Tension between standardization and specialization shaped the dispersal of breeds throughout the empire as well. Here, stockbreeders served two masters: the unfamiliar climates and topographies of Australia, New Zealand, and North America, which demanded local adaptations, and the British consumer, whose dinner table was the end of the line for the bulk of colonial beef and mutton. As they tried to balance local adaptation and metropolitan taste, breeders experimented with heredity, testing the limits of contemporary understandings of heritability and breed plasticity, and developed of new strains of livestock genetically derived from British breeds, but culturally, economically and environmentally hybrid. In the process, imperialism itself was instantiated in these animals. Bodies of sheep and cattle were remade to suit new lands and later to fill the refrigerated holds of ocean liners. The empire itself was recast as a vast apparatus for feeding Britons.     Overcoming Fas-mediated apoptosis accelerates Helicobacter-induced gastric cancer in mice

    The initiating molecular events in Helicobacter-induced gastric carcinogenesis are not known. Early in infection, Fas antigen-mediated apoptosis depletes parietal and chief cell populations, leading to architectural distortion. As infection progresses, metaplastic and dysplastic glands appear, which are resistant to Fas-mediated apoptosis. These abnormal lineages precede, and are thought to be the precursor lesions of, gastric cancer. Acquisition of an antiapoptotic phenotype before transformation of cells suggests that loss of Fas sensitivity may be an early required trait for gastric cancer. We reasoned that forced Fas-apoptosis resistance would result in earlier and more aggressive gastric cancer in our mouse model. Fas antigen-deficient (lpr) mice or C57BL/6 wild-type mice were irradiated and reconstituted with C57BL/6 marrow forming partial lpr/wt chimera or wt/wt control mice, extending the life span of the lpr and ensuring a competent immune response to Helicobacter felis infection. Infected lpr/wt mice developed gastric cancer as early as 7 months after infection (compared with 15 months in wt/wt mice). At 10 months (90%) and 15 months (100%), mice developed aggressive invasive lesions. This earlier onset and more aggressive histology strongly argues that Fas-apoptosis resistance is an early and important feature of gastric cancer formation

    Evaluation of the Cumbria and Lancashire Network for Collaborative Outreach (CLNCO)

    Forward from funders The Cumbria and Lancashire Collaborative Outreach Network (CLNCO) has been unique in bringing together partners from two regions under shared governance to raise awareness of the outreach available to support young people’s progression to higher education. An impartial central team has provided all schools and colleges across Cumbria and Lancashire with information about the activities and interventions offered by our partners to ensure all young people have the opportunity to access information, advice and guidance about their future options. Discussing requests from individual schools has been an important part of this process. CLNCO partners have further collaborated in delivering innovative new activity to address identified gaps in engagement. CLNCO has also been unique in its approach to evaluating the network’s impact. The evaluation has focused on the relationships between partners and the effectiveness of collaboration. Our thanks go to Dr Ann-Marie Houghton and her team from REAP (Researching Equity, Access and Participation) at Lancaster University for their methodical and thorough approach to working within the challenging timeframes of the project. This resulting report will be shared amongst CLNCO partners to support the continuation of strong provider relationships across Lancashire and Cumbria and sustain the legacy of CLNCO in effectively co-ordinating outreach provision. As CLNCO draws to a close, HEFCE has launched a new initiative, the National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP) which will target specific areas in both counties and, like its predecessor, emphasise the value of inclusivity and collaboration. Its aim is to close the gap between expected and actual progression to meet the Government’s target of doubling the number of young people from widening participation backgrounds who enter higher education by 2020. We will use learning gained from CLNCO and this evaluation report to support our work under the new programme. Finally, we hope the findings presented here will provide useful insights for colleagues at a national level and support the country-wide sharing of best practice

    Accessing and assessing appropriate widening participation data:an exploration of how data are used and by whom

    When attempting to use data to inform practice and policy, the availability, accuracy and relevance of that data are paramount. This article maps the range of users interested in data relating to the UK11 Data requirements for England, Wales, Scotland, and N Ireland vary according to the complex remits of government and devolved administrations in the UK. Although the issues discussed in this paper predominantly relate to the English context, we argue, this does not detract from the central arguments presented regarding common and widely shared concerns relating to data collection and use by different users working within a HEI and the HE sector more broadly. It explores some challenges associated with identifying, defining, obtaining and using data to inform decisions about targeting and monitoring WP initiatives associated with student access, achievement and progression. It considers the pragmatic and strategic response by different users of institutional WP data within the UK. We use examples from previous institutional and commissioned WP research and evaluations undertaken over the past decade to illustrate some of the tensions concerning the access and assessment of WP data. We argue that whilst the increasing interest in WP participation data and evaluative feedback is commendable, attempts to establish a causal link between WP activity and changes in student awareness, aspiration, access and achievement are not straightforward. The diversity of producers, uses and users of WP data working in different sectors and institutions produces many challenges. The paper concludes with suggestions on ways data could be improved

    GUDMAP - An Online GenitoUrinary Resource

    The GenitoUrinary Development Molecular Anatomy Project (GUDMAP) is a consortium of laboratories working to provide the scientific and medical community with gene expression data and tools to facilitate research (see "www.gudmap.org":http://www.gudmap.org). The data provided by GUDMAP includes large _in situ_ hybridization screens (wholemount and section) and expression microarray analysis of components of the developing mouse urogenital system (including laser-captured material and FACS-isolated cells from transgenic reporter mice). In addition, a high-resolution anatomy ontology has been developed by members of the GUDMAP consortium to describe the subcompartments of the developing murine genitourinary tract. 

The GUDMAP Database Development Team and Editorial Office - both based in Edinburgh - function to ensure submission, curation, storage and presentation of the data submitted by the GUDMAP consortium. Our collective aim is twofold: 1) to simplify the process of submission so that data is publically available as soon as it is produced; and 2) to organize this information in a database and ensure that the online interface is continuously available and easy to use. Thus far, we have developed a range of tools that help both the submitter and the end user. These include: an online annotation tool that simplifies _in situ_ data submission through an ontology-based graphical user interface; a database interface that allows users to browse and query expression data, and to filter data by organ system; a heat-map display of microarray data and analyses. Furthermore, the Edinburgh team has developed a GUDMAP Disease Database that queries associations between genes, genitourinary diseases, and renal/urinary and reproductive phenotypes. In collaboration with GUDMAP consortium members at the CCHMC (Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center), the Disease Database is being extended to include mammalian phenotypes mapped to OMIM entries. 

By virtue of its impressive dataset and its ease of use we hope that the GUDMAP Website will continue to serve as a powerful resource for biologists, clinicians and bioinformaticians with an interest in the urogenital system
