    Becoming an RN : a hermeneutic phenomenology study of the socialization of graduate RNs

    Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)Nationwide, there has been a trend for acute care facilities to hire a greater percentage of new graduate registered nurses (GRNs). It has been estimated that in acute care 42% of newly hired Registered Nurses (RNs) are likely to be new graduates; and turnover rates for these new hires can range between 35 and 60 percent. A high turnover rate of RNs can have several negative consequences including increased cost in training and recruitment, and decreased quality of patient care. Current literature has identified challenges that occur during the transition period between being a student and becoming a registered nurse. There is a gap in the literature regarding an understanding of the experience of the newly graduate RNs and an understanding of when GRNs feel like they are fully functioning as an RN and part of the health care team. A Hermeneutic Phenomenology study was conducted in a 500 bed acute care facility in Northeast Ohio. Ten GRNs agreed to participate in the study and completed one-on-one interviews with the researcher. Themes that emerged focused on the process of transitioning into the role of RN. Participants discussed challenges of the new RN role, especially their first code experience. Major themes that emerged included: self-esteem and confidence, development of critical thinking, mentoring, bullying, amount to learn, and high expectations

    State-to-State Rotational Rate Constants for CO+He: Infrared Double Resonance Measurements and Simulation of the Data Using the SAPT Theoretical Potential Energy Surface

    An extensive data set of 54 time-resolved pump-probe measurements was used to examine CO+He rotational energy transfer within the CO v=2 rotational manifold. Rotational levels in the range Ji=2-9 were excited and collisional energy transfer of population to the levels Jf=1-10 was monitored. The resulting data set was analyzed by fitting to numerical solutions of the master equation. State-to-state rate constant matrices were generated using fitting law functions and ab initio theoretical calculations that employed the SAPT potential energy surface of Heijmen et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 107, 9921 (1997)]. Fitting laws based on the modified exponential gap (MEG), statistical power exponential gap (SPEG), and energy corrected sudden with exponential power (ECS-EP) models all yielded acceptable simulations of the kinetic data, as did the theoretical rate constants. However, the latter were unique in their ability to reproduce both our kinetic data and the pressure broadening coefficients for CO+He. These results provide an impressive demonstration of the quality of the symmetry adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) potential energy surface

    Evaluation of Urethral Stent Placement for Benign Urethral Obstructions in Dogs

    BACKGROUND: Benign urethral obstructions (BUO) in dogs result in substantial morbidity because of challenges with conventional therapies. Treatment of malignant urethral obstructions with intraluminal urethral stents is reported to successfully relieve obstructions. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and outcome of urethral stent placement for treatment of BUO in dogs. ANIMALS: Eleven client‐owned animals with urethral stents placed for treatment of BUO. METHODS: Retrospective study in which medical records were reviewed in dogs diagnosed with BUO and treated with a metallic urethral stent. Data collected included signalment, cause of benign obstruction, procedure time, size and type of stent, complications, and short‐ and long‐term outcome. RESULTS: Eleven dogs with 15 urethral stents were included. Intraluminal urethral stent(s) relieved the obstructions in all dogs. Four dogs had 2 stents placed in separate procedures because of incomplete patency after treatment (n = 1), inadvertent compression of the stent (n = 1), or tissue ingrowth through the stent (n = 2). The median continence score after stent placement was 10 of 10 (range 3–10) with 6 dogs being continent, 3 mildly incontinent, and 1 each moderately and severely incontinent. All owners considered their dog to have an excellent long‐term clinical outcome with long‐term urethral patency. The median follow‐up time was 24 months (range 4–48). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Urethral stents appear to be an effective treatment for benign urinary obstructions. Moderate to severe incontinence developed in a minority (12.5%) of dogs. Stents relieved obstructions in all dogs with an excellent long‐term outcome

    State-to-State Rotational Relaxation Rate Constants for CO+Ne from IR-IR Double-Resonance Experiments: Comparing Theory to Experiment

    IR-IR double-resonance experiments were used to study the state-to-state rotational relaxation of CO with Ne as a collision partner. Rotational levels in the range Ji=2-9 were excited and collisional energy transfer of population to the levels Jf=2-8 was monitored. The resulting data set was analyzed by fitting to numerical solutions of the master equation. State-to-state rate constant matrices were generated using fitting law functions. Fitting laws based on the modifed exponential gap (MEG) and statistical power exponential gap (SPEG) models were used; the MEG model performed better than the SPEG model. A rate constant matrix was also generated from scattering calculations that employed the ab initio potential energy surface of McBane and Cybulski [J. Chem. Phys. 110, 11 734 (1999)]. This theoretical rate constant matrix yielded kinetic simulations that agreed with the data nearly as well as the fitted MEG model and was unique in its ability to reproduce both the rotational energy transfer and pressure broadening data for Ne-CO. The theoretical rate coefficients varied more slowly with the energy gap than coefficients from either of the fitting laws

    Electronic stress tensor analysis of molecules in gas phase of CVD process for GeSbTe alloy

    We analyze the electronic structure of molecules which may exist in gas phase of chemical vapor deposition process for GeSbTe alloy using the electronic stress tensor, with special focus on the chemical bonds between Ge, Sb and Te atoms. We find that, from the viewpoint of the electronic stress tensor, they have intermediate properties between alkali metals and hydrocarbon molecules. We also study the correlation between the bond order which is defined based on the electronic stress tensor, and energy-related quantities. We find that the correlation with the bond dissociation energy is not so strong while one with the force constant is very strong. We interpret these results in terms of the energy density on the "Lagrange surface", which is considered to define the boundary surface of atoms in a molecule in the framework of the electronic stress tensor analysis.Comment: 32 pages, 9 figure

    Smokestacks and Steeples: A Case Study of the Reciprocal Relationship between the Catholic Church and Industrial Milwaukee ,1870-1929

    This study analyzes a portion of Milwaukee\u27s history through the lens of Catholic history. Its focus is the role of the Milwaukee Catholic Church as an urbanizing force, within the framework of urban history. The backdrop to this narrative is Milwaukee\u27s period of heavy industrialization. I operate under the thesis that a reciprocal relationship existed between industrial Milwaukee and the Catholic Church through which both institutions were affected. The urban-industrial environment, especially in new industrial suburbs, was forged through this unique relationship. This study will examine the relationship between the Church and Milwaukee\u27s industrialists, ethnicity in the industrial era, the interaction between the Church and urban politics, the role of the Church in urbanization, and the Church\u27s role as an agency of social welfare, regardless of creed, in an era when state sponsored programs were non-existent. This study is written under the proposition that religion in an urban context must be portrayed as a player in its own right, acting upon and redefining the industrial community in its vicinity. Historically, urban churches actively shaped the industrial community around them. Likewise, the urban industrial community acted upon the church. When retelling urban history, it is necessary to take into account the central role played by church and religion. Although most previous urban and labor histories have ignored religion, this study is not the first to suggest a complex relationship between urban and religious histories. In the late 1990s, the noted urban historian Kathleen Conzen issued a call to urban and labor historians not to overlook the role of religion in their histories. Professor Conzen asserted correctly that American urban history has accepted an implicit secularization thesis . . . why religion has had such power, what the religious impulse has really meant to the lives of urban dwellers or the corporate development of the city, or what urbanization has meant for religion - these themes remain outside the purview of the field. Conzen\u27s call for a greater dialogue between the two sub-fields has gone mostly unheeded by urban historians
