Play it Again: Evolved Audio Effects and Synthesizer Programming
Automatic programming of sound synthesizers and audio devices to match a given, desired sound is examined and a Genetic Algorithm (GA) that functions independent of specific synthesis techniques is proposed. Most work in this area has focused on one synthesis model or synthesizer, designing the GA and tuning the operator parameters to obtain optimal results. The scope of such inquiries has been limited by available computing power, however current software (Ableton Live, herein) and commercially available hardware is shown to quickly find accurate solutions, promising a practical application for music creators. Both software synthesizers and audio effects processors are examined, showing a wide range of performance times (from seconds to hours) and solution accuracy, based on particularities of the target devices. Random oscillators, phase synchronizing, and filters over empty frequency ranges are identified as primary challenges for GA based optimization
Thermodynamic description of a dynamical glassy transition
For the dynamical glassy transition in the -spin mean field spin glass
model a thermodynamic description is given. The often considered marginal
states are not the relevant ones for this purpose. This leads to consider a
cooling experiment on exponential timescales, where lower states are accessed.
The very slow configurational modes are at quasi-equilibrium at an effective
temperature. A system independent law is derived that expresses their
contribution to the specific heat. -scaling in the aging regime of

Predictors of discordance among Chilean families
Parent-youth agreement on parental behaviors can characterize effective parenting. Although
discordance in families may be developmentally salient and harmful to youth outcomes, predictors
of discordance have been understudied, and existing research in this field has been mostly limited
to North American samples. This paper addressed this literature gap by using data from a
community-based study of Chilean adolescents. Analysis was based on 1,068 adolescents in
Santiago, Chile. The dependent variable was discordance which was measured by the difference
between parent and youth’s assessment of parental monitoring. Major independent variables for
this study were selected based on previous research findings that underscore youth’s
developmental factors, positive parental and familial factors and demographic factors. Descriptive
and multivariate analyses were conducted to examine the prevalence and associations between
youth, parental and familial measures with parent-youth discordance. There was a sizable level of
discordance between parent and youth’s report of parental monitoring. Youth’s gender and
externalizing behavior were significant predictors of discordance. Warm parenting and family
involvement were met with decreases in discordance. The negative interaction coefficients
between parental warmth and youth’s gender indicated that positive parental and familial
measures have a greater effect on reducing parent-youth discordance among male youths. Results
support the significance of positive family interactions in healthy family dynamics. Findings from
this study inform the importance of services and interventions for families that aim to reduce

A New Kinematic Distance Estimator to the LMC
The distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) can be directly determined
by measuring three of its properties, its radial-velocity field, its mean
proper motion, and the position angle \phi_ph of its photometric line of nodes.
Statistical errors of 2% are feasible based on proper motions obtained with any
of several proposed astrometry satellites, the first possibility being the
Full-Sky Astrometric Mapping Explorer (FAME). The largest source of systematic
error is likely to be in the determination of \phi_ph. I suggest two
independent methods to measure \phi_ph, one based on counts of clump giants and
the other on photometry of clump giants. I briefly discuss a variety of methods

Modification of aftertaste with a menthol mouthwash reduces food wanting, liking, and ad <i>libitum </i>intake of potato crisps
This research investigated the effect of modifying the aftertaste of potato crisps on (1) temporal sensory perception and (2) appetite using three mouthwash conditions (no mouthwash, a water mouthwash, and a menthol mouthwash). For the sensory study, 17 screened female subjects were trained on the Temporal Dominance of Sensations (TDS) methodology. Subjects undertook TDS to monitor all sensory attributes during the mastication of a 2 g crisp until swallowing (at 20s), then conducted the mouthwash, and then continued the TDS task to monitor aftertaste until 90s. For the appetite study, 36 subjects (18 male, 18 female) completed 100 mm Visual Analogue Scales (VAS) for desire, liking, hunger, and thirst, followed by an ad libitum eating task. For the VAS scales testing, subjects chewed and swallowed a 2 g crisp, and then immediately conducted the mouthwash before completing the VAS scales. For the ad libitum task, subjects were given 12 min to consume as many crisps as they desired on a plate (up to 50 g). Every three minutes they were required to conduct a mouthwash. TDS results showed that in comparison with no mouthwash, the water mouthwash significantly reduced aftertaste attributes such as savoury, salty, and fatty mouthcoating, and the menthol mouthwash significantly increased aftertaste attributes of cooling, minty, and tingly. The water mouthwash did not influence desire and liking of crisps, or hunger and thirst. The water mouthwash did not influence ad libitum intake of the crisps over a 12 min period. The menthol mouthwash significantly reduced desire and liking of the crisps, as well as hunger and thirst. Furthermore, the menthol mouthwash significantly reduced ad libitum crisp intake by 29% over the 12 min period
Low Temperature Photo-oxidation of Chloroperoxidase Compound II
Oxidation of the heme-thiolate enzyme chloroperoxidase (CPO) from Caldariomyces fumago with peroxynitrite (PN) gave the Compound II intermediate, which was photo-oxidized with 365 nm light to give a reactive oxidizing species. Cryo-solvents at pH ≈ 6 were employed, and reactions were conducted at temperatures as low as − 50 °C. The activity of CPO as evaluated by the chlorodimedone assay was unaltered by treatment with PN or by production of the oxidizing transient and subsequent reaction with styrene. EPR spectra at 77 K gave the amount of ferric protein at each stage in the reaction sequence. The PN oxidation step gave a 6:1 mixture of Compound II and ferric CPO, the photolysis step gave an approximate 1:1 mixture of active oxidant and ferric CPO, and the final mixture after reaction with excess styrene contained ferric CPO in 80% yield. In single turnover reactions at − 50 °C, styrene was oxidized to styrene oxide in high yield. Kinetic studies of styrene oxidation at − 50 °C displayed saturation kinetics with an equilibrium constant for formation of the complex of Kbind = 3.8 × 104 M− 1 and an oxidation rate constant of kox = 0.30 s− 1. UV–Visible spectra of mixtures formed in the photo-oxidation sequence at ca. − 50 °C did not contain the signature Q-band absorbance at 690 nm ascribed to CPO Compound I prepared by chemical oxidation of the enzyme, indicating that different species were formed in the chemical oxidation and the photo-oxidation sequence
InP/Ga0.47In0.53As monolithic, two-junction, three-terminal tandem solar cells
The work presented has focussed on increasing the efficiency of InP-based solar cells through the development of a high-performance InP/Ga(0.47)In(0.53)As two-junction, three-terminal monolithic tandem cell. Such a tandem is particularly suited to space applications where a radiation-hard top cell (i.e., InP) is required. Furthermore, the InP/Ga(0.47)In(0.53)As materials system is lattice matched and offers a top cell/bottom cell bandgap differential (0.60 eV at 300 K) suitable for high tandem cell efficiencies under AMO illumination. A three-terminal configuration was chosen since it allows for independent power collection from each subcell in the monolithic stack, thus minimizing the adverse impact of radiation damage on the overall tandem efficiency. Realistic computer modeling calculations predict an efficiency boost of 7 to 11 percent from the Ga(0.47)In(0.53)As bottom cell under AMO illumination (25 C) for concentration ratios in the 1 to 1000 range. Thus, practical AMO efficiencies of 25 to 32 percent appear possible with the InP/Ga(0.47)In(0.53)As tandem cell. Prototype n/p/n InP/Ga(0.47)In(0.53)As monolithic tandem cells were fabricated and tested successfully. Using an aperture to define the illuminated areas, efficiency measurements performed on a non-optimized device under standard global illumination conditions (25 C) with no antireflection coating (ARC) give 12.2 percent for the InP top cell and 3.2 percent for the Ga(0.47)In(0.53)As bottom cell, yielding an overall tandem efficiency of 15.4 percent. With an ARC, the tandem efficiency could reach approximately 22 percent global and approximately 20 percent AMO. Additional details regarding the performance of individual InP and Ga(0.47)In(0.53)As component cells, fabrication and operation of complete tandem cells and methods for improving the tandem cell performance, are also discussed
On-Line Learning with Restricted Training Sets: An Exactly Solvable Case
We solve the dynamics of on-line Hebbian learning in large perceptrons
exactly, for the regime where the size of the training set scales linearly with
the number of inputs. We consider both noiseless and noisy teachers. Our
calculation cannot be extended to non-Hebbian rules, but the solution provides
a convenient and welcome benchmark with which to test more general and advanced
