Terrestrial laser scanning and 3D imaging: Heritage case study – The Black Gate, Newcastle Upon Tyne

    Get PDF
This paper offers a case study on the recording of a section of wall on a complex heritage building, the Black Gate in Newcastle upon Tyne. The paper adopts case study methodology to assess the appropriateness of using a long range scanner based upon pulse technology for the recording of part of this historic structure and describes the scanning instruments adopted as well as the selection of appropriate software for the pre-processing and documentation. The study offers an overview of the survey planning stages, field operation, and processing of 3D point cloud data using the third party software adopted, including problems encountered. Issues emerging are discussed, in both the 2D and 3D modelling of detailed surfaces from point cloud data, and in the process of software selection, data preparation and export, pre-processing of point cloud data, meshing and the creation of 2D geometry and 3D animations. The paper describes the end results offered as deliverables for this project, and offers recommendations for a working method that can produce data suitable for producing stone-by-stone elevation drawings. The work processes and cost / time indicators are included in this case study and conclusions will consider whether the technique adopted could lead to an improved solution for heritage recording compared to those traditional techniques which are currently employed to produce stone-by-stone elevations. Areas for future research are identified

Virtual reality urban modelling - an overview

    Get PDF
This paper offers an overview of the increasing use of Virtual Reality (VR) technologies for the simulation of urban environments. It provides a summary of cities worldwide where three-dimensional computer modelling is being utilised to aid urban planning. The study considers the need for a digital representation of cities and raises issues pertaining to advantages, barriers and ownership. A case study of a pilot project on the visualisation of Newcastle upon Tyne is examined to show an approach adopted for the representation of this city in North East England. The process of this visualisation is summarised and future research is outlined in relation to this city model

Testing Bekenstein's Relativistic MOND gravity with Lensing Data

We propose to use multiple-imaged gravitational lenses to set limits on gravity theories without dark matter, specificly TeVeS (Bekenstein 2004), a theory which is consistent with fundamental relativistic principles and the phenomenology of MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) theory. After setting the framework for lensing and cosmology, we derive analytically the deflection angle for the point lens and the Hernquist galaxy profile, and fit galaxy-quasar lenses in the CASTLES sample. We do this with three methods, fitting the observed Einstein ring sizes, the image positions, or the flux ratios. In all cases we consistently find that stars in galaxies in MOND/TeVeS provide adequate lensing. Bekenstein's toy μ\mu function provides more efficient lensing than the standard MOND μ\mu function. But for a handful of lenses [indicated in Table 2,3, fig 16] a good fit would require a lens mass orders of magnitude larger/smaller than the stellar mass derived from luminosity unless the modification function μ\mu and modification scale a0a_0 for the universal gravity were allowed to be very different from what spiral galaxy rotation curves normally imply. We discuss the limitation of present data and summarize constraints on the MOND μ\mu function. We also show that the simplest TeVeS "minimal-matter" cosmology, a baryonic universe with a cosmological constant, can fit the distance-redshift relation from the supernova data, but underpredicts the sound horizon size at the last scattering. We conclude that lensing is a promising approach to differentiate laws of gravity (see also astro-ph/0512425).Comment: reduced to 17p, 16 figs, discussed cosmology and constraints on mu-function, MNRAS accepte

    Traffic simulation in 3D world

    Get PDF
This paper is the result of more than three months of research completed at the School of the Built Environment, Virtual Environment Suite. This study focusing on measuring the impacts of a change in the infrastructure using a 3D traffic simulation model. Various aspects about the research area and the simulation model were explained. Details on technical aspects of the simulation and the modelling are also given. The focus will lay on motor traffic and thus especially on the changes in traffic circulation as a result of relocating the car access of the City Site. The impacts of the infrastructure changes will be analysed, by simulating the current situation as well as the future situation. Comparison of the different simulations will show the impacts

A screen for round egg mutants in Drosophila identifies tricornered, furry, and misshapen as regulators of egg chamber elongation.

The elongation of tissues and organs during embryonic development results from the coordinate polarization of cell behaviors with respect to the elongation axis. Within the Drosophila melanogaster ovary, initially spherical egg chambers lengthen dramatically as they develop to create the elliptical shape of the mature egg. This morphogenesis depends on an unusual form of planar polarity within the egg chamber's outer epithelial cell layer known as the follicle cells. Disruption of follicle cell planar polarity leads to the production of round rather than elongated eggs; however, the molecular mechanisms that control this tissue organization are poorly understood. Starting from a broadly based forward genetic screen, we have isolated 12 new round egg complementation groups, and have identified four of the mutated genes. In mapping the largest complementation group to the fat2 locus, we unexpectedly discovered a high incidence of cryptic fat2 mutations in the backgrounds of publicly available stocks. Three other complementation groups correspond to the genes encoding the cytoplasmic signaling proteins Tricornered (Trc), Furry (Fry), and Misshapen (Msn). Trc and Fry are known members of an NDR kinase signaling pathway, and as a Ste20-like kinase, Msn may function upstream of Trc. We show that all three proteins are required for follicle cell planar polarity at early stages of egg chamber elongation and that Trc shows a planar polarized distribution at the basal follicle cell surface. These results indicate that this new mutant collection is likely to provide novel insight into the molecular mechanisms controlling follicle cell planar polarity and egg chamber elongation

Brazil, Politics, The Olympics and the FIFA World Cup

Interest in the development of the political system of the largest nation in South America has been a long-standing feature of scholarly research (see for example Rocha and McDonagh 2014; Levine and Crocitti 1999; McCann 2008). Academic interest in sport in South America has been given a significant boost by the scheduled hosting of the two largest sports megaevents – the FIFA men’s football World Cup Finals and the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games – in Brazil and Rio de Janeiro in 2014 and 2016 respectively. This is not to say that research has not been conducted until recently, but to acknowledge that the English-language literature has started to increase, and looks certain to grow even more rapidly in the coming years (for earlier research see Arbena 1999). One of the reasons is that the staging of these ‘megas’ focuses the attention of the global media and academics on the host nation and cities involved
