    UK architects' approach to designing schools

    What do architects think when designing schools? How do they approach the problem of designing a learning environment? What understanding do they have of the educational process? There are many questions concerning school design and what approaches best identify the important elements when designing a school. This study explores the ways in which designers understand and influence learning environments. Architects providing specialist design services in educational settings were interviewed using a serni-structured forrnat. Project files were analysed as case studies to illustrate the reality of designing a school. This study recognises and explores the critical role of the designer as a rnediator of the requirements of regulators (government- Department of Education) and users (teachers). It emerges that procedural elernents of design are influenced by the values and educational understanding of the participants as well as by the regulations and approvals process. It is a role of great responsibility and can be a deciding factor in the success of the educational setting. Knowledge of what happens and how the school design systern is organised gives both designers and anyone related to designing a classroom a greater awareness of learning spaces

    To Be, or Not To Be, That Is the Question - In a Group That Is

    There is a perception in Western Australia that some regions do not have many farmer groups and that there are large numbers of farmers who aren't involved with group activities. This was seen to be a problem for government and industry research organisations that are attempting to encourage change in rural communities through group processes. This perception was not supported by the results of a study of in which 172 south western grain belt farmers were surveyed at three major field days in WA during 2002. With 79% of those surveyed currently involved in an average of 1.7 farmer groups, it can be argued they are heavily involved with group activities. Interestingly older farmers tended to be involved in more groups. Those that are involved in groups do so to gain information, social interaction and to improve themselves, their enterprise and the community; whereas those not involved said they have other sources of information, limited time and the groups offered were not perceived to be applicable.     In Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), seasonal photoperiod is shown to regulate the onset of sexual maturation, yet which brain region(s) is involved, and how light information impacts the neuroendocrine system are still not fully understood in teleosts. Detailed knowledge about the photoperiodic regulation of maturation in fish is still missing. In birds, it is shown that gonadotropin-releasing hormone (Gnrh) is located in the same neurons as vertebrate ancient (VA) opsin, suggesting a direct photoreceptive regulation for the onset of sexual maturity. This study presents a comprehensive topographic mapping of gnrh2, gnrh3, kisspeptin 2 (kiss2), gonadotropin-inhibiting hormone (gnih), and VA opsin using in situ hybridization on mature Atlantic salmon brains. Neurons positive for gnrh3 are expressed in the olfactory bulb and ventral telencephalon, while gnrh2-positive neurons are located dorsally in the midbrain tegmentum. Gonadotropin-inhibiting hormone (Gnih)-expressing cell bodies are present in the ventral thalamus and extend caudally to the hypothalamus with kiss2-expressing cells appearing in a lateral position. VA opsin-positive cells are present in the telencephalon, the rostro-dorsal ring of the left habenula, the ventral thalamus, and the midbrain tegmentum. The results show no similar co-location as found in birds, hypothesizing that the photoreceptive modulation of Gnrh in salmon may interact through neuronal networks.     Simulator for Microlens Planet Surveys

    We summarize the status of a computer simulator for microlens planet surveys. The simulator generates synthetic light curves of microlensing events observed with specified networks of telescopes over specified periods of time. Particular attention is paid to models for sky brightness and seeing, calibrated by fitting to data from the OGLE survey and RoboNet observations in 2011. Time intervals during which events are observable are identified by accounting for positions of the Sun and the Moon, and other restrictions on telescope pointing. Simulated observations are then generated for an algorithm that adjusts target priorities in real time with the aim of maximizing planet detection zone area summed over all the available events.     Involving patients and families in a social robot study

    Innovative research in care practice for older people can benefit from the active involvement of patient and family partners. Involvement may begin with identifying priorities, then move to formulate research questions and to plan the research methods, to data collection, and finally to analysis and knowledge dissemination. However, in the field of dementia care, actively engaging patients and families in co-research is a novel practice that needs exploration. This paper describes the experiences and perspectives of two patient researchers and three family researchers, along with four clinicians (two physicians, a nurse, and an occupational therapist) within a social robot project in dementia care. Meeting notes, team reflection focus groups, follow–up interviews, and a research journal were used to document the research process. The results are presented in three themes: (a) identify challenges and lessons learned, (b) co-inquire enriched learning, (c) co-produce knowledge for care improvement. All team members agreed that an inclusive environment was important to facilitate meaningful partnerships for undertaking research together. Trust and respect were seen as vital for a rewarding and productive experience in the co-inquiry journey. Some of the challenges to sustaining participant engagement were competing priorities and a risk of tokenism. This article provides a rich description as well as practical details of the research experiences among team members. We offer examples of lessons learned and practical tips to help others increase the engagement of patients and families in research.     Using participatory research to co-produce an education and training e-resource to support care home staff to meet the sexuality, intimacy and relationship needs of care home residents with and without dementia

    AimTo present the methodological approach and research methods chosen in a research study designed to enable the collaborative creation of an education and training e-resource designed to facilitate and support care home staff to address the sexuality, intimacy and relationship needs of older care home residents.DesignCo-production using community-based participatory approach.MethodsFour participatory workshops with care home staff, residents and their significant others.ResultsWorkshops 1 and 2 identified and developed real-world case scenarios related to sexuality, intimacy and relationship needs and identified care staff training needs in this area. Then workshop 3 provided valuable feedback on the prototype training e-resource, and the final workshop identified care home staff engagement with and implementation of the e-resource in practice.ConclusionThe findings provide evidence that using participatory approaches, such as co-production, to develop education and training resources in a sensitive subject area with care home residents, significant others, carers and care home staff, was a useful approach in engaging a vulnerable population group, in a sensitive area.     Qatar-2: A K dwarf orbited by a transiting hot Jupiter and a more massive companion in an outer orbit

    We report the discovery and initial characterization of Qatar-2b, a hot Jupiter transiting a V = 13.3 mag K dwarf in a circular orbit with a short period, P_ b = 1.34 days. The mass and radius of Qatar-2b are M_p = 2.49 M_j and R_p = 1.14 R_j, respectively. Radial-velocity monitoring of Qatar-2 over a span of 153 days revealed the presence of a second companion in an outer orbit. The Systemic Console yielded plausible orbits for the outer companion, with periods on the order of a year and a companion mass of at least several M_j. Thus Qatar-2 joins the short but growing list of systems with a transiting hot Jupiter and an outer companion with a much longer period. This system architecture is in sharp contrast to that found by Kepler for multi-transiting systems, which are dominated by objects smaller than Neptune, usually with tightly spaced orbits that must be nearly coplanar
