The Belgian Contribution to Global 1968
The calendar year of 1968 is almost universally associated with student unrest. Belgium fits into this picture rather well, with major student mobilisations in Leuven and Brussels occurring in the first half of that notoriously restless calendar year.1 Yet all-inclusive assessments of the social movements and political reconfigurations happening that year, not only in Belgium but elsewhere in Europe and North America as well, must go beyond the relatively narrow confines of university student milieus. For the purposes of this essay, I propose also to address fresh developments occurring within the worlds of labor and cultural productions. In terms of political developments, particular attention will be placed on discussions affecting the forces composing the traditional Old Left, i.e. social democracy and communism, with special emphasis given to the rise of a New and â eventually â a Far Left. Mention will likewise be made of important reverberations of such trends in the lifeworld of Catholicism. Leaving aside certain national peculiarities, all aforementioned categories of analysis are crucial for an understanding of 1968 around the world (...)
The article wishes to pay attention to two related, but analytically separate, features of the history of the Long Sixties in Western Europe. On the one hand, it focuses on a significant wave of progressive Catholicism which emerged in the wake of Vatican ii. Often just one or two years later, secular social movements likewise began to make their mark on European society in the proverbial Long Sixties culminating in the events of 1968. By virtue of the fact that Catholic activism often predate secular activism by a few years, Catholic activists often played disproportionate roles in the atmosphere of heightened social movement activity in many European societies, a moment sometimes referred to as the «spirit of 1968»

Political travel across the âIron Curtainâ and Communist youth identities in West Germany and Greece in the 1970s and 1980s
This article explores tours through the Iron Curtain arranged by West German and Greek pro-Soviet Communist youth groups, in an attempt to shed light on the transformation of European youth cultures beyond the âAmericanisationâ story. It argues that the concept of the âblack boxâ, employed by Rob Kroes to describe the influence of American cultural patterns on Western European youth, also applies to the reception of Eastern Bloc policies and norms by the Communists under study. Such selective reception was part of these groupsâ efforts to devise a modernity alternative to the âcapitalistâ one, an alternative modernity which tours across the Iron Curtain would help establish. Nevertheless, the organisers did not wish such travel to help eliminate American/Western influences on youth lifestyles entirely: the article analyses the excursionsâ aims with regard to two core components of youth lifestyles in Western Europe since the 1960s, which have been affected by intra-Western flows, the spirit of âdoing oneâs own thingâ and transformations of sexual practices. The article also addresses the experience of the travellers in question, showing that they felt an unresolved tension: the tours neither served as a means of Sovietisation nor as an impulse to develop an openly anti-Soviet stance.PostprintPeer reviewe
