Radiative corrections to the lightest KK states in the T^2/(Z_2\times Z_2') orbifold
We study radiative corrections localized in the fixed points of the orbifold
for the field theory in six dimensions with two dimensions compactified on the
orbifold in a specific realistic model for low energy
physics that solves the proton decay and neutrino mass problem. We calculate
corrections to the masses of the lightest stable KK modes, which could be the
candidates for the dark matter.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure
Leptons and photons at the LHC: cascades through spinless adjoints
We study the hadron collider phenomenology of (1,0) Kaluza-Klein modes along
two universal extra dimensions compactified on the chiral square. Cascade
decays of spinless adjoints proceed through tree-level 3-body decays involving
leptons as well as one-loop 2-body decays involving photons. As a result,
spectacular events with as many as six charged leptons, or one photon plus four
charged leptons are expected to be observed at the LHC. Unusual events with
relatively large branching fractions include three leptons of same charge plus
one lepton of opposite charge, or one photon plus two leptons of same charge.
We estimate the current limit from the Tevatron on the compactification scale,
set by searches for trilepton events, to be around 270 GeV.Comment: 33+1 pages, 14 figure
Dark Matter in the Singlet Extension of MSSM: Explanation of Pamela and Implication on Higgs Phenomenology
As discussed recently by Hooper and Tait, the singlino-like dark matter in
the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) extended by a singlet Higgs
superfield can give a perfect explanation for both the relic density and the
Pamela result through the Sommerfeld-enhanced annihilation into singlet Higgs
bosons ( or followed by ) with being light enough to decay
dominantly to muons or electrons. In this work we analyze the parameter space
required by such a dark matter explanation and also consider the constraints
from the LEP experiments. We find that although the light singlet Higgs bosons
have small mixings with the Higgs doublets in the allowed parameter space,
their couplings with the SM-like Higgs boson (the lightest
doublet-dominant Higgs boson) can be enhanced by the soft parameter
and, in order to meet the stringent LEP constraints, the tends to
decay into the singlet Higgs pairs or instead of . So the
produced at the LHC will give a multi-muon signal, h_{SM} -> aa -> 4
muons or h_{SM} -> hh -> 4 a -> 8 muons.Comment: Version in JHE
Probing Kaluza-Klein Dark Matter with Neutrino Telescopes
In models in which all of the Standard Model fields live in extra universal
dimensions, the lightest Kaluza-Klein (KK) particle can be stable. Calculations
of the one-loop radiative corrections to the masses of the KK modes suggest
that the identity of the lightest KK particle (LKP) is mostly the first KK
excitation of the hypercharge gauge boson. This LKP is a viable dark matter
candidate with an ideal present-day relic abundance if its mass is moderately
large, between 600 to 1200 GeV. Such weakly interacting dark matter particles
are expected to become gravitationally trapped in large bodies, such as the
Sun, and annihilate into neutrinos or other particles that decay into
neutrinos. We calculate the annihilation rate, neutrino flux and the resulting
event rate in present and future neutrino telescopes. The relatively large mass
implies that the neutrino energy spectrum is expected to be well above the
energy threshold of AMANDA and IceCube. We find that the event rate in IceCube

Mutations of the BRAF gene in human cancer
Cancers arise owing to the accumulation of mutations in critical genes that alter normal programmes of cell proliferation, differentiation and death. As the first stage of a systematic genome-wide screen for these genes, we have prioritized for analysis signalling pathways in which at least one gene is mutated in human cancer. The RAS RAF MEK ERK MAP kinase pathway mediates cellular responses to growth signals. RAS is mutated to an oncogenic form in about 15% of human cancer. The three RAF genes code for cytoplasmic serine/threonine kinases that are regulated by binding RAS. Here we report BRAF somatic missense mutations in 66% of malignant melanomas and at lower frequency in a wide range of human cancers. All mutations are within the kinase domain, with a single substitution (V599E) accounting for 80%. Mutated BRAF proteins have elevated kinase activity and are transforming in NIH3T3 cells. Furthermore, RAS function is not required for the growth of cancer cell lines with the V599E mutation. As BRAF is a serine/threonine kinase that is commonly activated by somatic point mutation in human cancer, it may provide new therapeutic opportunities in malignant melanoma

Отмечена тенденция роста популярности эколого-биологических исследований среди старшеклассников г. Нижнего Новгорода и успешное вхождение в профессию выпускников научного общества учащихся.In the article, the research activity of the ecology and biology of senior pupils of the scientific society of the pupils "Eureka" in Nizhny Novgorod is considered as one of the significant innovative forms of professional self-determination. Impact of castor meal on root-knot and free-living nematodes
Soil amendment may enhance soil quality as well as reduce plant-parasitic nematode. Despite the many applications already undertaken using castor meal, its efficiency in controlling root-knot nematodes (RKN, Meloidogyne incognita) when applied to melon (Cucumis melo) is still not clear. Three different amounts of castor meal (Ricinus communis) applied were evaluated in microplots planted with melon either with or without RKN. The impact of castor meal on soil free-living nematode communities was also determined. Total nematode genera richness was estimated as 37 for the entire set of microplots sampled across both sampling dates. Rarefaction analysis resulted in 12 collector's curves out of the total of 30 that reached the horizontal asymptote. Univariate ANOVA with two factors yielded differences (p < 0.05) only with regard to the time factor. Simpson, Shannon, Evenness and Equitability indices showed a trend toward moderate increases by the end of the experiment, while the other indices were higher for tomato in pre-transplant sampling compared to harvest. Nematode community and diversity changed during the course of the experiment, although there was substantial confounding heterogeneity within and between the factorial combinations from the beginning. Root knot population was not reduced by the castor meal but increased throughout the period, regardless of treatment. RKN reduced melon yield, number and weight of melon
New insights into the genetic etiology of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias
Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/'proxy' AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted microglia implication. Gene prioritization in the new loci identified 31 genes that were suggestive of new genetically associated processes, including the tumor necrosis factor alpha pathway through the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex. We also built a new genetic risk score associated with the risk of future AD/dementia or progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD/dementia. The improvement in prediction led to a 1.6- to 1.9-fold increase in AD risk from the lowest to the highest decile, in addition to effects of age and the APOE ε4 allele

Este trabalho teve por objetivo revisar os principais aspectos da intoxicação por Senecio spp. no Rio Grande do Sul no que se refere à patologia, patogenia e epidemiologia dessa importante causa de morte em bovinos nesse Estado. Foram abordados, também, os principais fatores climáticos e ambientais que aparentemente favorecem a emergência e o estabelecimento da planta e a ocorrência da intoxicação, que tem aumentado a sua frequência nos últimos anos no Estado, e as possíveis formas de controle da planta incluindo o manejo correto do solo e a utilização de espécies domésticas menos susceptíveis nas áreas invadidas
