A Kernel-space POF virtual switch
Protocol Oblivious Forwarding (POF) aims at providing a standard southbound interface for sustainable Software Defined Networking (SDN) evolvement. It overcomes the limitations of popular Open Flow protocols (an existing widely-adopted southbound interface), through the enhancement of SDN forwarding plane. This paper pioneers the design and implementation of a Kernel-space POF Virtual Switch (K_POFVS) on Linux platform. K_POFVS can improve the packet processing speed, through fast packet forwarding and the capability of adding/deleting/modifying protocol fields in kernel space. In addition, it is able to enhance flow table matching speed, by separating the mask table (consisting of flow entry masks used to figure out the matching field) and the flow table under a caching mechanism. Furthermore, K_POFVS can achieve efficient communication between the kernel space and the user space, via extending the Netlink communication between them. HandPainter – 3D sketching in VR with hand-based physical proxy
3D sketching in virtual reality (VR) enables users to create 3D virtual objects intuitively and immersively. However, previous studies showed that mid-air drawing may lead to inaccurate sketches. To address this issue, we propose to use one hand as a canvas proxy and the index finger of the other hand as a 3D pen. To this end, we first perform a formative study to compare two-handed interaction with tablet-pen interaction for VR sketching. Based on the findings of this study, we design HandPainter, a VR sketching system which focuses on the direct use of two hands for 3D sketching without requesting any tablet, pen, or VR controller. Our implementation is based on a pair of VR gloves, which provide hand tracking and gesture capture. We devise a set of intuitive gestures to control various functionalities required during 3D sketching, such as canvas panning and drawing positioning. We show the effectiveness of HandPainter by presenting a number of sketching results and discussing the outcomes of a user study-based comparison with mid-air drawing and tablet-based sketching tools
Impacts of tectonic subsidence on basin depth and delta lobe building
Channel avulsions on river deltas are the primary means to distribute sediment and build land at the coastline. Many studies have detailed how avulsions generate delta lobes, whereby multiple lobes amalgamate to form a fan-shaped deposit. These studies often assume steady subsidence and uniform basin depth. In nature, however, lobe building is disrupted by variable subsidence, and progradation of lobes into basins with variable depth: conditions that are prevalent for tectonically active areas. Herein, we explore sediment dispersal and deposition patterns across scales using measurements of delta and basin morphology compiled from field surveys and remote sensing, collected over 150 years, from the Selenga Delta (Baikal Rift Zone), Russia. Tectonic subsidence events, associated with earthquakes on normal faults crossing the delta, displace portions of the topset several meters below mean lake level. This allogenic process increases regional river gradient and triggers lobe-switching avulsions. The timescale for these episodes is shorter than the predicted autogenic lobe avulsion timescale. During quiescent periods between subsidence events, channel-scale avulsions occur relatively frequently because of in-channel sediment aggradation, dispersing sediment to regional lows of the delta. Avulsion settings for the Selenga Delta preserve discrete stratal packages that could contain predominately deep channels. Exploring the interplay between tectonic subsidence and sediment accumulation patterns will improve interpretations of stratigraphy from active margins and basin models

Deficiency of Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase Enhancer Protects Mice From Diet-Induced Obesity and Insulin Resistance
OBJECTIVE: Phosphoinositide 3-kinase enhancer A (PIKE-A) is a proto-oncogene that promotes tumor growth and transformation by enhancing Akt activity. However, the physiological functions of PIKE-A in peripheral tissues are unknown. Here, we describe the effect of PIKE deletion in mice and explore the role of PIKE-A in obesity development.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Whole-body PIKE knockout mice were generated and subjected to high-fat–diet feeding for 20 weeks. The glucose tolerance, tissue-specific insulin sensitivity, adipocyte differentiation, and lipid oxidation status were determined. The molecular mechanism of PIKE in the insulin signaling pathway was also studied.
RESULTS: We show that PIKE-A regulates obesity development by modulating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) phosphorylation. PIKE-A is important for insulin to suppress AMPK phosphorylation. The expression of PIKE-A is markedly increased in adipose tissue of obese mice, whereas depletion of PIKE-A inhibits adipocyte differentiation. PIKE knockout mice exhibit a prominent phenotype of lipoatrophy and are resistant to high-fat diet–induced obesity, liver steatosis, and diabetes. PIKE knockout mice also have augmented lipid oxidation, which is accompanied by enhanced AMPK phosphorylation in both muscle and adipose tissue. Moreover, insulin sensitivity is improved in PIKE-A–deficient muscle and fat, thus protecting the animals from diet-induced diabetes.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that PIKE-A is implicated in obesity and associated diabetes development by negatively regulating AMPK activity

Structural analysis of an InGaN/GaN based light emitting diode by X-ray diffraction
The important structural characteristics of hexagonal GaN in an InGaN/GaN multi quantum well, which was aimed to make a light emitted diode and was grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition on c-plain sapphire, are determined by using nondestructive high-resolution X-ray diffraction in detail. The distorted GaN layers were described as mosaic crystals characterized by vertical and lateral coherence lengths, a mean tilt, twist, screw and edge type threading dislocation densities. The rocking curves of symmetric (00.l) reflections were used to determine the tilt angle, while the twist angle was an extrapolated grown ω-scan for an asymmetric (hk.l) Bragg reflection with an h or k nonzero. Moreover, it is an important result that the mosaic structure was analyzed from a different (10.l) crystal direction that was the angular inclined plane to the z-axis. The mosaic structure parameters were obtained in an approximately defined ratio depending on the inclination or polar angle of the sample. © 2009 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC
Damage mechanism of wind turbine blade under the impact of lightning induced arcs
It is not clear for the damage mechanism of the blade structure under the effect of the lightning strike arc. In this paper, the damage characteristics of blades under the effect of an lightning arc are obtained by the impulse large current experiment. Based on the actual blade structure, a magnetohydrodynamics model is built to be suitable for multifield coupling of the heat-magnetic-airflow and we obtain the temporal and spatial variation of the temperature and pressure. The experimental results show that the blade tends to crack from the position of the trailing edge near the arc attachment point and the crack extends in the direction of the blade root and tip. The length of carbonization damage caused by the high temperature of the arc is much smaller than the crack length due to the airflow impact. When the down-conductor is placed on the main beam, carbonization damage distributes in the area between the left web and the trailing edge. When placed on the right web, it distributes between the right web and the trailing edge. In the finite element simulation, the temperature of the arc ignited point increases to the peak value and then decreases rapidly and then, it increases to the maximum and tends to stabilize. The high temperature inside the blade region diffuses from the boundary between the pressure surface and the right web to the trailing edge. The pressure of the trailing edge increases to the maximum and then oscillates to decrease. The airflow inside the blade continuously oscillates between the right web and the trailing edge. It is recommended to improve the toughness of the epoxy resin adhesive and set the down-conductor on the main beam
4.5 years multi-wavelength observations of Mrk 421 during the ARGO-YBJ and Fermi common operation time
We report on the extensive multi-wavelength observations of the blazar
Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) covering radio to gamma-rays, during the 4.5 year
period of ARGO-YBJ and Fermi common operation time, from August 2008 to
February 2013. In particular, thanks to the ARGO-YBJ and Fermi data, the whole
energy range from 100 MeV to 10 TeV is covered without any gap. In the
observation period, Mrk 421 showed both low and high activity states at all
wavebands. The correlations among flux variations in different wavebands were
analyzed. Seven large flares, including five X-ray flares and two GeV gamma-ray
flares with variable durations (3-58 days), and one X-ray outburst phase were
identified and used to investigate the variation of the spectral energy
distribution with respect to a relative quiescent phase. During the outburst
phase and the seven flaring episodes, the peak energy in X-rays is observed to
increase from sub-keV to few keV. The TeV gamma-ray flux increases up to
0.9-7.2 times the flux of the Crab Nebula. The behavior of GeV gamma-rays is
found to vary depending on the flare, a feature that leads us to classify
flares into three groups according to the GeV flux variation. Finally, the
one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model was adopted to describe the emission
spectra. Two out of three groups can be satisfactorily described using injected
electrons with a power-law spectral index around 2.2, as expected from
relativistic diffuse shock acceleration, whereas the remaining group requires a
harder injected spectrum. The underlying physical mechanisms responsible for
different groups may be related to the acceleration process or to the

The impact of hyperhidrosis on patients' daily life and quality of life : A qualitative investigation
Background: An understanding of the daily life impacts of hyperhidrosis and how patients deal with them, based on qualitative research, is lacking. This study investigated the impact of hyperhidrosis on the daily life of patients using a mix of qualitative research methods. Methods: Participants were recruited through hyperhidrosis patient support groups such as the Hyperhidrosis Support Group UK. Data were collected using focus groups, interviews and online surveys. A grounded theory approach was used in the analysis of data transcripts. Data were collected from 71 participants, out of an initial 100 individuals recruited. Results: Seventeen major themes capturing the impacts of hyperhidrosis were identified; these covered all areas of life including daily life, psychological well-being, social life, professional /school life, dealing with hyperhidrosis, unmet health care needs and physical impact. Conclusions: Psychosocial impacts are central to the overall impacts of hyperhidrosis, cutting across and underlying the limitations experienced in other areas of life.Peer reviewe
