Observations of V592 Cas -— an Outflow at Optical Wavelengths

    Get PDF
We present new red optical spectra of V592 Cas aimed at exploring the properties of the outflow of this system in a spectral region where the underlying white dwarf and the accretion disk do not contribute significantly to the observed absorption components of the Hα and He I line profiles. We use the Hα emission line to study the wind, which appears as pronounced blueshifted P Cygni absorption troughs whose low velocity end contaminates the blue side of the emission line profile. The wind appears to be episodic in nature, with multiple events reaching velocities of 5000 km s^–1 in Hα. Similar (but weaker) wind signatures appear in the He I 5876 Å line but are absent in He I 6678 Å. Our data suggest that during wind episodes the wind is phase dependent and is visible for half of the orbit of the system. Considering that V592 Cas is viewed almost face-on, the symmetry axis of the outflow cannot be orthogonal to the disk and/or the outflow must have some other inherent asymmetry in outflow geometry. A possible origin of the wind is in a disk hotspot, either at the initial impact point of the accretion stream on the disk edge or as a result of disk overflow (similar to SW Sextantis stars). Simultaneous optical photometry during one night of our spectroscopic observations indicate that there is no clear relationship between the optical brightness variations and the strength of the outflow in this system

Spectroscopic and Photometric Analysis of the Nova-Like Cataclysmic Variable PG 1000+667: A New VY Sculptoris Star

    Get PDF
Multiyear photometry and orbit-resolved spectroscopy of the nova-like cataclysmic variable PG 1000+667 show behavior associated with the VY Sculptoris subclass of nova-like cataclysmic variables. Photometric observations over a 35 month interval from Indiana University\u27s robotic telescope Robo-Scope show two drops of 3 mag to a low state. Spectroscopy shows a periodic velocity variation in the Hβ emission line with P = 3.47 hr. This places the star just above the 2-3 hour period gap, which supports the VY Sculptoris classification

The Repair and Return to Flight of Solid Rocket Booster Forward Skirt Serial Number 20022

    Get PDF
On April 5, 1991, a solid rocket booster (SRB) forward skirt serial number (S/N) 20022 sustained buckling damage during water impact after the launch of Space Transportation System Flight 37 (STS-37). As of that date, five forward skirts had been lost during water impact. Repair attempts began with the least damaged skirt available (S/N 20022). Sp ecial hydraulic tooling was used to remove buckled areas of the skirt. Afterwards, its aft clevis pinholes were found to be out of alignment with the redesigned solid rocket motor (RSRM) check gauge, but weld passes were used to correct this condition. Meanwhile, USA Analytics generated mechanical property data for buckled and subsequently debuckled material. Their analysis suggested that structural integrity might be improved by adding stringer reinforcements, stiffeners, to the aft bay section of the skirt. This improvement was recommended as a fleet modification to be implemented on a case-by-case basis

Genetic maps of Saccharum officinarum L. and Saccharum robustum Brandes & Jew ex grassl.

Genetic analysis was performed in a population composed of 100 F1 individuals derived from a cross between a cultivated sugarcane (S. officinarum La Purple) and its proposed progenitor species (S. robustum "Mol 5829'). Various types (arbitrarily primed-PCR, RFLPs, and AFLPs) of single-dose DNA markers (SDMs) were used to construct genetic linkage maps to both species. The LA Purple map was composed of 341 SDMs, spanning 74 linkage groups and 1.881 cM, white the Mol 5829 map contained 301 SDMs, spanning 65 linkage gropus and 1,189 cM, Transmission genetics in these two species showed incomplete polysomy based on the detection of 15% of SDMs linked in repulsion in LA Purple and 13% of these in Mol 5829. Because of this incomplete polysomy, multiple-dose markers could not be mapped for lack of a genetic model for their segregation. Due to inclusion of RFLP anchor probes, conserved in related species, the resulting maps will serve as useful tools for breeding, ecology, evolution, and molecular biology studies within the Andropogoneae

The Chromospheric Activity of [HH97 FS Aur-79: a Close Binary With Late-Type Active (Dk7E+Dm3E) Components

    Get PDF
Using Doppler tomography we show that FS Aur-79, a near-contact close binary system with late-type active dK7e+dM3e components, has chromospheric prominences in two distinct emission regions associated with the primary star and a larger amount of chromospheric activity associated with the cooler secondary star. The line profiles, equivalent widths, and equivalent width ratios of the Hα and Hβ emission lines as a function of orbital phase further support that the majority of the chromospheric emission originates above the secondary star and near the neck region. Analysis of high-resolution spectra using the technique of broadening functions has enabled us to determine the radial velocity of the secondary star near quadratures to be approximately 224 km s−1. A Wilson–Devinney model of the system fitting the UBV light curves and radial velocities shows that there are star spots near the chromospherically active regions. Finally, the absence of Li I λ6708 in the spectra lets us put a lower limit on the age of this system to at least 500 Myr. © 2011. The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved

    Non-clasical Nucleation in Supercooled Nickel

The dynamics of homogeneous nucleation and growth of crystalline nickel from the super-cooled melt is examined during rapid quenching using molecular dynamics and a modified embedded atom method potential. The character of the critical nuclei of the crystallization transition is examined using common neighbor analysis and visualization. At nucleation the saddle point droplet consists of randomly stacked planar structures with an in plane triangular order. These results are consistent with previous theoretical results that predict that the nucleation process in some metals is non-classical due to the presence of long-range forces and a spinodal.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Quantum open systems and turbulence

We show that the problem of non conservation of energy found in the spontaneous localization model developed by Ghirardi, Rimini and Weber is very similar to the inconsistency between the stochastic models for turbulence and the Navier-Stokes equation. This sort of analogy may be useful in the development of both areas.Comment: to appear in Physical Review

Thermal expansion in small metal clusters and its impact on the electric polarizability

    Get PDF
The thermal expansion coefficients of NaN\mathrm{Na}_{N} clusters with 8N408 \le N \le 40 and Al7\mathrm{Al}_{7}, Al13\mathrm{Al}_{13}^- and Al14\mathrm{Al}_{14}^- are obtained from {\it ab initio} Born-Oppenheimer LDA molecular dynamics. Thermal expansion of small metal clusters is considerably larger than that in the bulk and size-dependent. We demonstrate that the average static electric dipole polarizability of Na clusters depends linearly on the mean interatomic distance and only to a minor extent on the detailed ionic configuration when the overall shape of the electron density is enforced by electronic shell effects. The polarizability is thus a sensitive indicator for thermal expansion. We show that taking this effect into account brings theoretical and experimental polarizabilities into quantitative agreement.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, one table.
