Acquiring Unique Collections: Collaborative Approaches to Metadata

Acquisition of unique digital material is an ongoing challenge for Special Collections units—often unique digital material comes with little or no metadata associated with the digital objects. Using two ongoing projects at the University of Oregon Libraries as case studies, this paper explores strategies archivists and librarians can use to increase descriptive metadata coming in with unique born-digital collections. Library staff involved with the Latino Roots and University of Oregon Veterans Oral History projects work with the content creators, in this case faculty and students, to build collections with rich descriptive information that is relevant both to librarians and to the communities being documented

Outcomes after pneumonectomy versus limited lung resection in adults with traumatic lung injury.

Pneumonectomy after traumatic lung injury (TLI) is associated with shock, increased pulmonary vascular resistance, and eventual right ventricular failure. Historically, trauma pneumonectomy (TP) mortality rates ranged between 53 and 100%. It is unclear if contemporary mortality rates have improved. Therefore, we evaluated outcomes associated with TP and limited lung resections (LLR) (i.e., lobectomy and segmentectomy) and aimed to identify predictors of mortality, hypothesizing that TP is associated with greater mortality versus LLR. We queried the Trauma Quality Improvement Program (2010-2016) and performed a multivariable logistic regression to determine the independent predictors of mortality in TLI patients undergoing TP versus LLR. TLI occurred in 287,276 patients. Of these, 889 required lung resection with 758 (85.3%) undergoing LLR and 131 (14.7%) undergoing TP. Patients undergoing TP had a higher median injury severity score (26.0 vs. 24.5, p = 0.03) but no difference in initial median systolic blood pressure (109 vs. 107 mmHg, p = 0.92) compared to LLR. Mortality was significantly higher for TP compared to LLR (64.9% vs 27.2%, p < 0.001). The strongest independent predictor for mortality was undergoing TP versus LLR (OR 4.89, CI 3.18-7.54, p < 0.001). TP continues to be associated with a higher mortality compared to LLR. Furthermore, TP is independently associated with a fivefold increased risk of mortality compared to LLR. Future investigations should focus on identifying parameters or treatment modalities that improve survivability after TP. We recommend that surgeons reserve TP as a last-resort management given the continued high morbidity and mortality associated with this procedure

Differences in approach run kinematics: successful vs. unsuccessful jumps in the pole vault

This study investigated biomechanical differences between successful and unsuccessful jumps during a pole vault competition. Two hundred and seven pairs of successful and unsuccessful jumps at the same height were analysed. Participants included male and female athletes of three different age groups with bar height clearances ranging from 2.81 to 5.91 m. Run-up parameters were collected using an Optojump Next system and a Stalker Pro II radar gun. A 2D kinematical analysis was conducted to obtain selected parameters of the take-off. Only trivial and small differences were found between successful and unsuccessful jumps. The speed at last touchdown showed a significant small difference between successful and unsuccessful jumps, as the greater speed at takeoff (+0.15 m/s) was observed at successful jumps compared to unsuccessful jumps. Furthermore, female athletes showed a significant small difference in horizontal hand–foot distance between successful jumps and unsuccessful jumps (+0.05 m and +0.06 m at pole plant and take-off, respectively). The results suggest that pole vaulters should produce a fast run-up and avoid a decrease in speed before take-off. Small adjustments in the take-off posture might increase the transfer of energy from the athlete to the pole and thus an improvement concerning the height of bar clearance

Direct cost of maintenance of totally implanted central venous catheter patency

Objetivo: Identificar el costo directo medio del mantenimiento de la permeabilidad de catéter venoso central totalmente implantado, con heparina, en el Hospital Día de un hospital público de alta complejidad especializado en tratamiento de pacientes oncológicos y estimar el costo directo medio de la substitución de la heparina por cloruro de sodio 0,9%. Método: Investigación cuantitativa, exploratorio-descriptiva, cuya muestra constituye la observación no participante de 200 mantenimientos de catéter venoso central totalmente implantado con heparina. El costo directo medio fue calculado multiplicándose el tiempo (cronometrado) despendido por profesionales participantes del procedimiento por el costo unitario de la mano de obra directa, sumándose al costo de los materiales y soluciones. Resultados: El costo directo medio total del mantenimiento del catéter, con heparina, correspondió a US$9.71 (DE=1.35) variando entre US$7.98 yUS$23.28. La estimativa del costo directo medio total del mantenimiento, substituyéndose la heparina por cloruro de sodio 0,9$8.81 (DP=1.29) ocurriendo, consecuentemente, la reducción de US$0.90/procedimiento. Conclusión: Los resultados obtenidos contribuyeron para la proposición de estrategias para auxiliar en la contención/minimización de costos del procedimiento. Post-modernism's use and abuse of Nietzsche

I focus on Nietzsche's architectural metaphor of self-construction in arguing for the claim that postmodern readings of Nietzsche misunderstand his various attacks on dogmatic philosophy as paving the way for acceptance of a self characterized by fundamental disunity. Nietzsche's attack on essentialist dogmatic metaphysics is a call to engage in a purposive self-creation under a unifying will, a will that possesses the strength to reinterpret history as a pathway to "the problem that we are". Nietzsche agrees with the postmodernists that unity is not a pre-given, however he would disavow their rejection of unity as a goal. Where the postmodernists celebrate "the death of the subject" Nietzsche rejects this valorization of disunity as a form of Nihilism and prescribes the creation of a genuine unified subjectivity to those few capable of such a goal. Postmodernists are nearer Nietzsche's idea of the Last Man than his idea of the Overman.Articl

LA JUSTICIA TRANSICIONAL EN COLOMBIA DESDE LOS ESTÁNDARES INTERNACIONALES DE PROTECCIÓN DE DERECHOS HUMANOS

The present scholarly-scientific work deals with the juridical-procedural and substantial tools that would allow us to overcome the current state of internal armed conflict, as well as the possible normative collision in the construction of a stable and lasting peace, with the objective of providing the bases necessary to resolve possible tensions between the national and international legal system in the framework of a process of transition that allows the realization of a peace agreement.The research method used is the logical deductive of study and documentary analysis of secondary sources, specifically legal norms, jurisprudence, national and foreign doctrine on the subjects. The results are the reflections on the elements provided by International Human Rights Law, International Humanitarian Law, experiences of the internal Colombian, foreign, and comparative order to ensure a stable and lasting peace under international and national law, without ignoring the rights of victims to truth, justice and reparation.La presente labor académico-científica versa sobre las herramientas jurídico-procesales y sustanciales que nos permitirían superar el estado de conflicto armado interno actual, así como la posible colisión normativa en la construcción de una paz estable y duradera, con el objetivo de brindar las bases necesarias para darle solución a las eventuales tensiones entre el ordenamiento jurídico nacional y el internacional en el marco de un proceso de transición que permita la materialización de un acuerdo de paz.
