    Preliminary Centaur Systems Analysis

    The Centaur is stored in the Orbiter payload bay on the Centaur Integrated Support System (CISS). The CISS not only cradles the Centaur prior to deployment but also provides any signal conditioning required to make the Centaur/Orbiter hardwire interfaces compatible. In addition, the CISS provides other Centaur functions such as controlling all the avionics safety features and providing all the helium supplies for tank pressurizations. Problems associated with a Centaur design concept using a transponder and two switchable antennas are defined. Solutions to these problems are presented

    International audienceThe development of regionalised hydrological models or procedures for estimating flow duration statistics has been the subject of international research since the 1970s. Historically these models have been based on multivariate statistical models that relate flow statistics to the physical and climatic characteristics of a catchment. The a priori classification of catchments has often been a component of this analysis. This paper discusses the background to the development of such models, with particular emphasis on the United Kingdom; it describes a new region of influence approach to estimating flow duration statistics and compares the performance of this method with current multivariate regression based methods for estimating flow duration statistics within the United Kingdom.     Advances in large-diameter liquid encapsulated Czochralski GaAs

    The purity, crystalline perfection, and electrical properties of n- and p-type GaAs crystals grown by the liquid encapsulated Czochralski (LEC) technique are evaluated. The determination of the dislocation density, incidence of twinning, microstructure, background purity, mobility, and minority carrier diffusion length is included. The properties of the LEC GaAs crystals are generally comparable to, if not superior to those of small-diameter GaAs material grown by conventional bulk growth techniques. As a result, LEC GaAs is suitable for application to minority carrier devices requiring high-quality and large-area substrates

    High purity low dislocation GaAs single crystals

    Recent advances in GaAs bulk crystal growth using the LEC (liquid encapsulated Czochralski) technique are described. The dependence of the background impurity concentration and the dislocation density distribution on the materials synthesis and growth conditions were investigated. Background impurity concentrations as low as 4 x 10 to the 15th power were observed in undoped LEC GaAs. The dislocation density in selected regions of individual ingots was very low, below the 3000 cm .3000/sq cm threshold. The average dislocation density over a large annular ring on the wafers fell below the 10000/sq cm level for 3 inch diameter ingots. The diameter control during the program advanced to a diameter variation along a 3 inch ingot less than 2 mm

    A new approach to estimating Mean Flow in the UK

    Traditionally, the estimation of Mean Flow (MF) in ungauged catchments has been approached using conceptual water balance models or empirical formulae relating climatic inputs to stream flow. In the UK, these types of models have difficulty in predicting MF in low rainfall areas because the conceptualisation of soil moisture behaviour and its relationship with evaporation rates used is rather simplistic. However, it is in these dry regions where the accurate estimation of flows is most critical to effective management of a scarce resource. A novel approach to estimating MF, specifically designed to improve estimation of runoff in dry catchments, has been developed using a regionalisation of the Penman drying curve theory. The dynamic water balance style Daily Soil Moisture Accounting (DSMA) model operates at a daily time step, using inputs of precipitation and potential evaporation and simulates the development of soil moisture deficits explicitly. The model has been calibrated using measured MFs from a large data set of catchments in the United Kingdom. The performance of the DSMA model is superior to existing established steady state and dynamic water-balance models over the entire data set considered and the largest improvement is observed in very low rainfall catchments. It is concluded that the performance of all models in high rainfall areas is likely to be limited by the spatial representation of rainfall.</p> <p style='line-height: 20px;'><b>Keywords: </b>hydrological models, regionalisation, water resources, mean flow, runoff, water balance, Penman drying curve, soil moisture model</p

    Quantum signatures of chaos in the dynamics of a trapped ion

    We show how a nonlinear chaotic system, the parametrically kicked nonlinear oscillator, may be realised in the dynamics of a trapped, laser-cooled ion, interacting with a sequence of standing wave pulses. Unlike the original optical scheme [G.J.Milburn and C.A.Holmes, Phys. Rev A, 44, p4704, (1991)], the trapped ion enables strongly quantum dynamics with minimal dissipation. This should permit an experimental test of one of the quantum signatures of chaos; irregular collapse and revival dynamics of the average vibrational energy.Comment: 9 pages, 9 Postscript figures, Revtex, submitted to Phys.
