    Preliminary results of a study of magnetic properties in the Foum-Zguid dyke (Morocco)

    This work focuses on the study of flow and propagation of magma using rock magnetic analyses along sections across the thick Jurassic dyke of Foum-Zguid (Southern Morocco). Thermomagnetic data show that Ti-poor titanomagnetite is the main magnetic carrier. Petrographic analysis shows that the main Ti phase (ilmenite) occurs either as lamellae within spinel (center of the dyke) or as isolated grains (dyke margin). Bulk magnetic properties display distinct behavior according to the distance to the dyke margin; grain size of the main magnetic carrier decreases towards the center of the dyke, while the natural remanent magnetization and the bulk magnetic susceptibility increase. Only the magnetic susceptibility ellipsoid close to the dyke margin corresponds to that usually found in thin dykes, with the magnetic foliation sub parallel to dyke margins. Maximum principal axis is in most cases either parallel or perpendicular to the intersection between the planes of magnetic foliation and dyke wall. Moreover, when this axis is perpendicular to the intersection it is associated with a more oblate magnetic susceptibility ellipsoid shape, indicating the presence of complex magnetic fabrics. The studied magnetic properties show that, in this 100 m wide thick dyke, flow structures related with dyke propagation are only preserved close to the quickly cooled dyke margins.     Signaling probabilities in ambiguity: who reacts to vague news?

    Ambiguity affects decisions of people who exhibit a distaste of and require a premium for dealing with it. Do ambiguity-neutral subjects completely disregard ambiguity and respond to any vague news? We couple decision-making in ambiguity with a preliminary information processing stage, where news is used to test prior beliefs and, possibly but not necessarily, update them. All decision-makers, including ambiguity-neutral, recognize and account for ambiguity at this stage; higher confidence makes ambiguity-neutral subjects less susceptible to vague news. In a two-color Ellsberg experiment with imprecise signals about the unknown probability of success they are less likely to respond to signals; the difference between them and non-neutral to ambiguity subjects vanishes for high precision signals. Less than 60% subjects choose the ambiguous urn, even for high communicated probabilities of success, suggesting many participants, especially ambiguity-neutral, discard vague news at the information processing stage.     Disruption of the estrogen receptor β gene in mice causes myeloproliferative disease resembling chronic myeloid leukemia with lymphoid blast crisis

    Proliferation of pluripotent, bone marrow stem cells, which develop to lymphoid and myeloid progenitors, is negatively regulated by estrogen. Although in estrogen deficiency and in estrogen receptor knockout mice there is significant alteration in bone marrow hematopoiesis, the effects of aging on estrogen receptor deficiencies in mice have not been investigated yet. In this study we show that by 1.5 years of age, estrogen receptor β knockout (ERβ(–)(/)(–)) mice develop pronounced splenomegaly that is much more severe in females than in males. Further characterization of these mice revealed myelogenous hyperplasia in bone marrow, an increase in the number of granulocytes and B lymphocytes in blood, lymphadenopathy, and infiltration of leukocytes in the liver and lung. Analysis by flow cytometry of the bone marrow cells revealed that the percentage and total number of Gr-1(hi)/Mac-1(hi)-positive granulocytes were increased by 15–30% and 100%, respectively. The numbers of B cells in the bone marrow and spleen were significantly higher in ERβ(–)(/)(–) mice than in WT littermates. Some of the ERβ(–)(/)(–) mice also had a severe lymphoproliferative phenotype. Thus the absence of ERβ results in a myeloproliferative disease resembling human chronic myeloid leukemia with lymphoid blast crisis. Our results indicate a previously unknown role for ERβ in regulating the differentiation of pluripotent hematopoietic progenitor cells and suggest that the ERβ(–)(/)(–) mouse is a potential model for myeloid and lymphoid leukemia.
