Another weak first order deconfinement transition: three-dimensional SU(5) gauge theory
We examine the finite-temperature deconfinement phase transition of
(2+1)-dimensional SU(5) Yang-Mills theory via non-perturbative lattice
simulations. Unsurprisingly, we find that the transition is of first order,
however it appears to be weak. This fits naturally into the general picture of
"large" gauge groups having a first order deconfinement transition, even when
the center symmetry associated with the transition might suggest otherwise.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figure
Kinetics of Bose-Einstein Condensation in a Trap
The formation process of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a trap is described
using a master equation based on quantum kinetic theory, which can be well
approximated by a description using only the condensate mode in interaction
with a thermalized bath of noncondensate atoms. A rate equation of the form n =
2W(n)[(1-exp((mu_n - mu)/kT))n + 1] is derived, in which the difference between
the condensate chemical potential mu_n and the bath chemical potential mu gives
the essential behavior. Solutions of this equation, in conjunction with the
theoretical description of the process of evaporative cooling, give a
characteristic latency period for condensate formation and appear to be
consistent with the observed behavior of both rubidium and sodium condensate
formation.Comment: 9 pages, Revte
Spin-dependent Bohm trajectories associated with an electronic transition in hydrogen
The Bohm causal theory of quantum mechanics with spin-dependence is used to
determine electron trajectories when a hydrogen atom is subjected to
(semi-classical) radiation. The transition between the 1s ground state and the
2p0 state is examined. It is found that transitions can be identified along
Bohm trajectories. The trajectories lie on invariant hyperboloid surfaces of
revolution in R^3. The energy along the trajectories is also discussed in
relation to the hydrogen energy eigenvalues.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figure
TuNet: End-to-end Hierarchical Brain Tumor Segmentation using Cascaded Networks
Glioma is one of the most common types of brain tumors; it arises in the
glial cells in the human brain and in the spinal cord. In addition to having a
high mortality rate, glioma treatment is also very expensive. Hence, automatic
and accurate segmentation and measurement from the early stages are critical in
order to prolong the survival rates of the patients and to reduce the costs of
the treatment. In the present work, we propose a novel end-to-end cascaded
network for semantic segmentation that utilizes the hierarchical structure of
the tumor sub-regions with ResNet-like blocks and Squeeze-and-Excitation
modules after each convolution and concatenation block. By utilizing
cross-validation, an average ensemble technique, and a simple post-processing
technique, we obtained dice scores of 88.06, 80.84, and 80.29, and Hausdorff
Distances (95th percentile) of 6.10, 5.17, and 2.21 for the whole tumor, tumor
core, and enhancing tumor, respectively, on the online test set.Comment: Accepted at MICCAI BrainLes 201

Dynamical brittle fractures of nanocrystalline silicon using large-scale electronic structure calculations
A hybrid scheme between large-scale electronic structure calculations is
developed and applied to nanocrystalline silicon with more than 10 atoms.
Dynamical fracture processes are simulated under external loads in the [001]
direction. We shows that the fracture propagates anisotropically on the (001)
plane and reconstructed surfaces appear with asymmetric dimers. Step structures
are formed in larger systems, which is understood as the beginning of a
crossover between nanoscale and macroscale samples.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
