Care as Everyday Staff Leadership
The analysis of data collected from a shadowing study conducted in Norway on pedagogical leaders indicated the importance of formal and informal interactions between leaders and their colleagues when working side by side. This article examines aspects of the pedagogical leaders’ everyday work that are vital to purposeful leadership and building and facilitating a caring community within early childhood education (ECE) centres. The data explore leadership care, including how pedagogical leaders emphasise the importance of care and consideration in their leadership work. Rather than focus on great leadership acts and accomplishments connected to their formal position, leadership care provided by pedagogical leaders gives care a distinctive value beyond their trivial and everyday importance
Critical thinking in kindergarten

‘Place’ as conceptual centre: a methodological focus on the bodily relations, movements and expressions of children up to three years of age in kindergarten
The purpose of this article is to show how attention on ‘place’ can be productive in methodology concerning the bodily relations, movements and expressions of children up to three years of age who are enrolled in kindergarten. While research that has adopted a hermeneutic and phenomenological approach has contributed to important knowledge concerning young children, we propose re-thinking methodology that takes children’s bodily relations, movements and expressions into concern. Using ‘place’ as a lens, we show how power relations are interrupted and allow for alternative ways for the researcher to relate to data. Inspired by Somerville (2010), elements of place are situated at the centre of the research analysis. The three key elements of place that are put to work are as follows: our relationship to place is constituted in stories and other representations; place learning is local and embodied; and place is a contact zone for cultural contact. The paper is part of a research project which explores how place can be more explicit in educational practices to strengthen kindergarten as a learning arena. We seek to explore how place relations work and what they have the possibility of producing in the analyzing process
Knowledge Development through Hybrid Leadership Practices
Abstract: This article considers the formal teacher leaders’ practices of leading knowledge development at the department level in early childhood education and care. To better understand these practices, we have utilised the hybrid leadership theory, along with qualitative shadowing and stimulated recall interviews. Our analyses demonstrate that these teacher leaders encourage knowledge development by functioning as hybrid leaders in their communities of practice, while our findings show that there are four leadership approaches to knowledge development that emerge from everyday work: providing professional guidance, acting as a role model in work performance, putting practices into words and supporting desired teaching practices. Moreover, our study reveals that the leading of knowledge development is dependent on teacher leaders’ practical knowledge and their influence in their communities of practice. We therefore posit that the provision of knowledge development through and within the relationships that comprise communities of practice is crucial developing ECEC as learning organisations
Critical thinking in kindergarten
In Norway kindergartens are viewed as the first step in childrens education. There is
an ongoing discussion in the early childhood field concerning how best to prepare
children for lifelong education. In this paper we want to discuss critical thinking in
relation to childrens everyday life in kindergarten. We focus on how kindergarten
teachers can practice critical thinking together with children by using documentation
as a starting point. We emphasize childrens active participation in critical thinking,
and point out some aspects we find important when it comes to accommodating
critical thinking in kindergarten. We argue that critical thinking must take into
account the social practice of thinking; both the power relations in the dialogue and
childrens movement, experimentation and way of being. It seems to be important to
fight for childrens rights when political goals appear to reduce childrens active
participation, and it is in this regard we find it interesting to discuss critical thinking
and how early childhood teachers can best arrange and prepare for such thinking in
kindergarten.
pensamento no jardim.
