An investigation of South Pole HOx chemistry: Comparison of model results with ISCAT observations
Unexpected high levels of OH and NO were recorded at the South Pole (SP) Atmospheric Research Observatory during the 1998-99 ISCAT field study. Model simulations suggest a major photochemical linkage between observed OH and NO. A detailed comparison of the observations with model predictions revealed good agreement for OH at NO levels between 120 and 380 pptv. However, the model tended to overestimate OH for NO levels < 120 pptv, while it underestimated OH at levels > 380 pptv. The reasons for these deviations appear not to involve NO directly but rather HOx radical scavenging for the low NO conditions and additional HOx sources for the high NO conditions. Because of the elevated levels of NO and highly activated HOx photochemistry, the SP was found to be a strong net source of surface ozone. It is quite likely that the strong oxidizing environment found at the South Pole extends over the entire polar plateau

Precision Measurement of the Newtonian Gravitational Constant Using Cold Atoms
About 300 experiments have tried to determine the value of the Newtonian
gravitational constant, G, so far, but large discrepancies in the results have
made it impossible to know its value precisely. The weakness of the
gravitational interaction and the impossibility of shielding the effects of
gravity make it very difficult to measure G while keeping systematic effects
under control. Most previous experiments performed were based on the torsion
pendulum or torsion balance scheme as in the experiment by Cavendish in 1798,
and in all cases macroscopic masses were used. Here we report the precise
determination of G using laser-cooled atoms and quantum interferometry. We
obtain the value G=6.67191(99) x 10^(-11) m^3 kg^(-1) s^(-2) with a relative
uncertainty of 150 parts per million (the combined standard uncertainty is
given in parentheses). Our value differs by 1.5 combined standard deviations
from the current recommended value of the Committee on Data for Science and
Technology. A conceptually different experiment such as ours helps to identify
the systematic errors that have proved elusive in previous experiments, thus
improving the confidence in the value of G. There is no definitive relationship
between G and the other fundamental constants, and there is no theoretical
prediction for its value, against which to test experimental results. Improving
the precision with which we know G has not only a pure metrological interest,
but is also important because of the key role that G has in theories of
gravitation, cosmology, particle physics and astrophysics and in geophysical

Peripheral neural cell sensitivity to mTHPC-mediated photodynamic therapy in a 3D in vitro model
Background: The effect of photodynamic therapy (PDT) on neural cells is important when tumours are within or adjacent to the nervous system. The purpose of this study was to investigate PDT using the photosensitiser, meta tetrahydroxyphenyl chlorin (mTHPC), on rat neurons and satellite glia, compared with human adenocarcinoma cell (MCF-7).Methods: Fluorescence microscopy confirmed that mTHPC was incorporated into all three cell types. Sensitivity of cells exposed to mTHPC-PDT (0–10 µg ml–1) was determined in a novel 3-dimensional collagen gel culture system. Cell death was quantified using propidium iodide and cell types were distinguished using immunocytochemistry. In some cases, neuron survival was confirmed by measuring subsequent neurite growth in monolayer culture.Results: MCF-7s and satellite glia were significantly more sensitive to PDT than neurons. Importantly, 4 µg ml–1 mTHPC PDT caused no significant neuron death compared with untreated controls but was sufficient to elicit substantial cell death in the other cell types. Initially, treatment reduced neurite length; neurons then extended neurites equivalent to those of untreated controls. The protocol was validated using hypericin (0–3 µg ml–1), which caused neuron death equivalent to other cell types.Conclusion: Neurons in culture can survive mTHPC-PDT under conditions sufficient to kill tumour cells and other nervous system cells
Revealing the former bed of Thwaites Glacier using sea-floor bathymetry: Implications for warm-water routing and bed controls on ice flow and buttressing
Abstract. The geometry of the sea floor immediately beyond
Antarctica's marine-terminating glaciers is a fundamental control on
warm-water routing, but it also describes former topographic pinning points
that have been important for ice-shelf buttressing. Unfortunately, this
information is often lacking due to the inaccessibility of these areas for
survey, leading to modelled or interpolated bathymetries being used as
boundary conditions in numerical modelling simulations. At Thwaites Glacier
(TG) this critical data gap was addressed in 2019 during the first cruise of
the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC) project. We present more than 2000 km2 of new multibeam
echo-sounder (MBES) data acquired in exceptional sea-ice conditions
immediately offshore TG, and we update existing bathymetric compilations.
The cross-sectional areas of sea-floor troughs are under-predicted by up to
40 % or are not resolved at all where MBES data are missing, suggesting that
calculations of trough capacity, and thus oceanic heat flux, may be
significantly underestimated. Spatial variations in the morphology of
topographic highs, known to be former pinning points for the floating ice
shelf of TG, indicate differences in bed composition that are supported by
landform evidence. We discuss links to ice dynamics for an overriding ice
mass including a potential positive feedback mechanism where erosion of
soft erodible highs may lead to ice-shelf ungrounding even with little
or no ice thinning. Analyses of bed roughnesses and basal drag contributions
show that the sea-floor bathymetry in front of TG is an analogue for extant
bed areas. Ice flow over the sea-floor troughs and ridges would have been
affected by similarly high basal drag to that acting at the grounding zone
today. We conclude that more can certainly be gleaned from these 3D
bathymetric datasets regarding the likely spatial variability of bed
roughness and bed composition types underneath TG. This work also addresses
the requirements of recent numerical ice-sheet and ocean modelling studies
that have recognised the need for accurate and high-resolution bathymetry to
determine warm-water routing to the grounding zone and, ultimately, for
predicting glacier retreat behaviour.

Family Planning Decisions, Perceptions and Gender Dynamics among Couples in Mwanza, Tanzania: A Qualitative Study.
Contraceptive use is low in developing countries which are still largely driven by male dominated culture and patriarchal values. This study explored family planning (FP) decisions, perceptions and gender dynamics among couples in Mwanza region of Tanzania. Twelve focus group discussions and six in-depth interviews were used to collect information from married or cohabiting males and females aged 18-49. The participants were purposively selected. Qualitative methods were used to explore family planning decisions, perceptions and gender dynamics among couples. A guide with questions related to family planning perceptions, decisions and gender dynamics was used. The discussions and interviews were tape-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed manually and subjected to content analysis. Four themes emerged during the study. First, "risks and costs" which refer to the side effects of FP methods and the treatment of side -effects as well as the costs inherit in being labeled as an unfaithful spouse. Second, "male involvement" as men showed little interest in participating in family planning issues. However, the same men were mentioned as key decision-makers even on the number of children a couple should have and the child spacing of these children. Third, "gender relations and communication" as participants indicated that few women participated in decision-making on family planning and the number of children to have. Fourth, "urban-rural differences", life in rural favoring having more children than urban areas therefore, the value of children depended on the place of residence. Family Planning programs should adapt the promotion of communication as well as joint decision-making on FP among couples as a strategy aimed at enhancing FP use
Tsukushi Modulates Xnr2, FGF and BMP Signaling: Regulation of Xenopus Germ Layer Formation
Cell-cell communication is essential in tissue patterning. In early amphibian development, mesoderm is formed in the blastula-stage embryo through inductive interactions in which vegetal cells act on overlying equatorial cells. Members of the TGF-beta family such as activin B, Vg1, derrière and Xenopus nodal-related proteins (Xnrs) are candidate mesoderm inducing factors, with further activity to induce endoderm of the vegetal region. TGF-beta-like ligands, including BMP, are also responsible for patterning of germ layers. In addition, FGF signaling is essential for mesoderm formation whereas FGF signal inhibition has been implicated in endoderm induction. Clearly, several signaling pathways are coordinated to produce an appropriate developmental output; although intracellular crosstalk is known to integrate multiple pathways, relatively little is known about extracellular coordination
Investment coordination in network industries: the case of electricity grid and electricity generation
Liberalization of network industries frequently separates the network from the other parts of the industry. This is important in particular for the electricity industry where private firms invest into generation facilities, while network investments usually are controlled by regulators. We discuss two regulatory regimes. First, the regulator can only decide on the network extension. Second, she can additionally use a capacity market with payments contingent on private generation investment. For the first case, we find that even absent asymmetric information, a lack of regulatory commitment can cause inefficiently high or inefficiently low investments. For the second case, we develop a standard handicap auction which implements the first best under asymmetric information if there are no shadow costs of public funds. With shadow costs, no simple mechanism can implement the second best outcome
