    Selfdual strings and loop space Nahm equations

    We give two independent arguments why the classical membrane fields should be loops. The first argument comes from how we may construct selfdual strings in the M5 brane from a loop space version of the Nahm equations. The second argument is that there appears to be no infinite set of finite-dimensional Lie algebras (such as su(N)su(N) for any NN) that satisfies the algebraic structure of the membrane theory.Comment: 28 pages, various additional comment

    On Central Charges and Hamiltonians for 0-brane dynamics

    We consider general properties of central charges of zero branes and associated duality invariants, in view of their double role, on the bulk and on the world volume (quantum-mechanical) theory. A detailed study of the BPS condition for the mass spectrum arising from toroidal compactifications is given for 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 BPS states in any dimensions. As a byproduct, we retreive the U-duality invariant conditions on the charge (zero mode) spectrum and the orbit classification of BPS states preserving different fractions of supersymmetry. The BPS condition for 0-branes in theories with 16 supersymmetries in any dimension is also discussed.Comment: 23 pages, latex fil

    We give a detailed exposition of the Alexandrov-Kontsevich-Schwarz- Zaboronsky superfield formalism using the language of graded manifolds. As a main illustarting example, to every Courant algebroid structure we associate canonically a three-dimensional topological sigma-model.     Role of therapeutic drug monitoring in pulmonary infections : use and potential for expanded use of dried blood spot samples

    Respiratory tract infections are among the most common infections in men. We reviewed literature to document their pharmacological treatments, and the extent to which therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is needed during treatment. We subsequently examined potential use of dried blood spots as sample procedure for TDM. TDM was found to be an important component of clinical care for many (but not all) pulmonary infections. For gentamicin, linezolid, voriconazole and posaconazole dried blood spot methods and their use in TDM were already evident in literature. For glycopeptides, beta-lactam antibiotics and fluoroquinolones it was determined that development of a dried blood spot (DBS) method could be useful. This review identifies specific antibiotics for which development of DBS methods could support the optimization of treatment of pulmonary infections

    Successful reconstruction of whole mitochondrial genomes from ancient Central America and Mexico

    The northern and southern peripheries of ancient Mesoamerica are poorly understood. There has been speculation over whether borderland cultures such as Greater Nicoya and Casas Grandes represent Mesoamerican outposts in the Isthmo-Colombian area and the Greater Southwest, respectively. Poor ancient DNA preservation in these regions challenged previous attempts to resolve these questions using conventional genetic techniques. We apply advanced in-solution mitogenome capture and high-throughput sequencing to fourteen dental samples obtained from the Greater Nicoya sites of Jícaro and La Cascabel in northwest Costa Rica (n = 9; A.D. 800–1250) and the Casas Grandes sites of Paquimé and Convento in northwest Mexico (n = 5; A.D. 1200–1450). Full mitogenome reconstruction was successful for three individuals from Jícaro and five individuals from Paquimé and Convento. The three Jícaro individuals belong to haplogroup B2d, a haplogroup found today only among Central American Chibchan-speakers. The five Paquimé and Convento individuals belong to haplogroups C1c1a, C1c5, B2f and B2a which, are found in contemporary populations in North America and Mesoamerica. We report the first successfully reconstructed ancient mitogenomes from Central America, and the first genetic evidence of ancestry affinity of the ancient inhabitants of Greater Nicoya and Casas Grandes with contemporary Isthmo-Columbian and Greater Southwest populations, respectively

    An M-theory solution generating technique and SL(2,R)

    In this paper we generalize the O(p+1,p+1) solution generating technique (this is a method used to deform Dp-branes by turning on a NS-NS B-field) to M-theory, in order to be able to deform M5-brane supergravity solutions directly in eleven dimensions, by turning on a non zero three form A. We find that deforming the M5-brane, in some cases, corresponds to performing certain SL(2,R) transformations of the Kahler structure parameter for the three-torus, on which the M5-brane has been compactified. We show that this new M-theory solution generating technique can be reduced to the O(p+1,p+1) solution generating technique with p=4. Further, we find that it implies that the open membrane metric and generalized noncommutativity parameter are manifestly deformation independent for electric and light-like deformations. We also generalize the O(p+1,p+1) method to the type IIA/B NS5-brane in order to be able to deform NS5-branes with RR three and two forms, respectively. In the type IIA case we use the newly obtained solution generating technique and deformation independence to derive a covariant expression for an open D2-brane coupling, relevant for OD2-theory.Comment: 24 pages, Latex. v2:Sections 3.2 and 3.3 improved. v3:Some clarifications added.     String Multiplets from an Invariant 2-Brane

    We study a three-dimensional gauge theory obtained from the dimensional reduction of a D4-brane worldvolume theory in the background of space-time moduli. An SL(3) symmetry in this theory, which acts on fields as well as coupling constants, is identified. By comparing the energies with the string tensions, we show that certain 1/2 supersymmetric classical solutions of this theory can be identified as SL(3,Z) multiplets of type II strings in eight dimensions. Results are then generalized to the non-linear Born-Infeld action. We also discuss the possibility of 1/8 BPS states in this theory and their representations in terms of string networks.Comment: 17 pages, Latex, minor correction

    Nuclear fission: The "onset of dissipation" from a microscopic point of view

    Semi-analytical expressions are suggested for the temperature dependence of those combinations of transport coefficients which govern the fission process. This is based on experience with numerical calculations within the linear response approach and the locally harmonic approximation. A reduced version of the latter is seen to comply with Kramers' simplified picture of fission. It is argued that for variable inertia his formula has to be generalized, as already required by the need that for overdamped motion the inertia must not appear at all. This situation may already occur above T=2 MeV, where the rate is determined by the Smoluchowski equation.     Influence of a CVT on the fuel consumption of a parallel medium-duty electric hybrid truck

    Hybrid electric vehicles are being developed to reduce the pollutant emissions and the fossil-fuel consumption of transportation. Innovative technologies are inserted to improve the performance of hybrid vehicles, including trucks and buses. Thereby, trends towards gear shifting automation motivate the research on replacing a discrete conventional Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Theoretically, such a transmission enables better operation points of the thermal engine, and therefore a reduction of its fuel consumption and emissions. However, the conventional (hydraulic actuated) CVT efficiency during quasi-stationary operation is typically lower than the efficiency of a classical discrete gearbox, which leads to higher fuel consumption. This paper is focused on the study of the interests of a CVT for a medium-duty Hybrid Electric Truck (HET). The complete model and control of CVT-based and AMT-based HET are described in a unified way using Energetic Macroscopic Representation (EMR). These models are transformed to backward-models to be computed by the Dynamic Programming Method (DPM). Such a method leads to define the (off-line) optimal energy management strategies for a fair comparison of both hybrid trucks. For the studied driving cycle, the hybridization allows a fuel saving of 10% with an AMT and 3% with a CVT. The fuel consumption is higher for the CVT-based HET in comparison with the AMT-based HET due to the lowest efficiency of the CVT (85%) compared to the AMT (around 92%). However, future (on-demand) CVTs with an increased efficiency could be a solution of interest to reduce the fuel consumption of such applications. The developed method can be used to test these new CVTs, other vehicles or other driving cycles

    Fission Hindrance in hot 216Th: Evaporation Residue Measurements

    The fusion evaporation-residue cross section for 32S+184W has been measured at beam energies of E_beam = 165, 174, 185, 196, 205, 215, 225, 236, 246,and 257 MeV using the ATLAS Fragment Mass Analyzer. The data are compared with Statistical Model calculations and it is found that a nuclear dissipation strength, which increases with excitation energy, is required to reproduce the excitation function. A comparison with previously published data show that the dissipation strength depends strongly on the shell structure of the nuclear system.Comment: 15 pages 9 figure
