Considerations on rescattering effects for threshold photo- and electro-production of on deuteron
We show that for the S-state -production in processes and the rescattering effects due to the
transition: (or are cancelled
out due to the Pauli principle. The large values for these effects predicted in
the past may result from the fact that the spin structure of the corresponding
matrix element and the necessary antisymmetrization induced by the presence of
identical protons (or neutrons) in the intermediate state was not taken into
account accurately. One of the important consequences of these considerations
is that photo- and electro-production on deuteron near threshold can
bring direct information about elementary neutron amplitudes.Comment: Add a new sectio
The Complexity of Computing Minimal Unidirectional Covering Sets
Given a binary dominance relation on a set of alternatives, a common thread
in the social sciences is to identify subsets of alternatives that satisfy
certain notions of stability. Examples can be found in areas as diverse as
voting theory, game theory, and argumentation theory. Brandt and Fischer [BF08]
proved that it is NP-hard to decide whether an alternative is contained in some
inclusion-minimal upward or downward covering set. For both problems, we raise
this lower bound to the Theta_{2}^{p} level of the polynomial hierarchy and
provide a Sigma_{2}^{p} upper bound. Relatedly, we show that a variety of other
natural problems regarding minimal or minimum-size covering sets are hard or
complete for either of NP, coNP, and Theta_{2}^{p}. An important consequence of
our results is that neither minimal upward nor minimal downward covering sets
(even when guaranteed to exist) can be computed in polynomial time unless P=NP.
This sharply contrasts with Brandt and Fischer's result that minimal
bidirectional covering sets (i.e., sets that are both minimal upward and
minimal downward covering sets) are polynomial-time computable.Comment: 27 pages, 7 figure
Light Hadron Masses from Lattice QCD
This article reviews lattice QCD results for the light hadron spectrum. We
give an overview of different formulations of lattice QCD, with discussions on
the fermion doubling problem and improvement programs. We summarize recent
developments in algorithms and analysis techniques, that render calculations
with light, dynamical quarks feasible on present day computer resources.
Finally, we summarize spectrum results for ground state hadrons and resonances
using various actions.Comment: 53 pages, 24 figures, one table; Rev.Mod.Phys. (published version);

Clonal karyotype evolution involving ring chromosome 1 with myelodysplastic syndrome subtype RAEB-t progressing into acute leukemia
s Karyotypic evolution is a well-known phenomenon in patients with malignant hernatological disorders during disease progression. We describe a 50-year-old male patient who had originally presented with pancytopenia in October 1992. The diagnosis of a myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) FAB subtype RAEB-t was established in April 1993 by histological bone marrow (BM) examination, and therapy with low-dose cytosine arabinoside was initiated. In a phase of partial hernatological remission, cytogenetic assessment in August 1993 revealed a ring chromosome 1 in 13 of 21 metaphases beside BM cells with normal karyotypes {[}46,XY,r(1)(p35q31)/46,XY]. One month later, the patient progressed to an acute myeloid leukemia (AML), subtype M4 with 40% BM blasts and cytogenetic examination showed clonal evolution by the appearance of additional numerical aberrations in addition to the ring chromosome{[}46,XY,r(1),+8,-21/45,XY,r(1),+8,-21,-22/46, XY]. Intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy was applied to induce remission in preparation for allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from the patient's HLA-compatible son. After BMT, complete remission was clinically, hematologically and cytogenetically (normal male karyotype) confirmed. A complete hematopoietic chimerism was demonstrated. A relapse in January 1997 was successfully treated using donor lymphocyte infusion and donor peripheral blood stem cells (PB-SC) in combination with GM-CSF as immunostimulating agent in April 1997, and the patient's clinical condition remained stable as of January 2005. This is an interesting case of a patient with AML secondary to MDS. With the ring chromosome 1 we also describe a rare cytogenetic abnormality that predicted the poor prognosis of the patient, but the patient could be cured by adoptive immunotherapy and the application of donor's PB-SC. This case confirms the value of cytogenetic analysis in characterizing the malignant clone in hernatological neoplasias, the importance of controlling the quality of an induced remission and of the detection of a progress of the disease. Photon- and meson-induced reactions on the nucleon
In an unitary effective Lagrangian model we develop a unified description of
both meson scattering and photon-induced reactions on the nucleon. Adding the
photon to an already existing model for meson-nucleon scattering yields both
Compton and meson photoproduction amplitudes. In a simultaneous fit to all
available data involving the final states , , ,
and the parameters of the nucleon resonances are
extracted.Comment: 57 pages, 14 figures, LaTex (uses Revtex and graphicx). Submitted to

Quasi-free photoproduction of η-mesons off 3He nuclei
Quasi-free photoproduction of η-mesons has been measured off nucleons bound in 3He nuclei for incident photon energies from the threshold region up to 1.4 GeV. The experiment was performed at the tagged photon facility of the Mainz MAMI accelerator with an almost 4π covering electromagnetic calorimeter, combining the TAPS and Crystal Ball detectors. The η-mesons were detected in coincidence with the recoil nucleons. This allowed a comparison of the production cross section off quasi-free protons and quasi-free neutrons and a full kinematic reconstruction of the final state, eliminating effects from nuclear Fermi motion. In the S11(1535) resonance peak, the data agree with the neutron/proton cross section ratio extracted from measurements with deuteron targets. More importantly, the prominent structure observed in photoproduction off quasi-free neutrons bound in the deuteron is also clearly observed. Its parameters (width, strength) are consistent with the expectations from the deuteron results. On an absolute scale the cross sections for both quasi-free protons and neutrons are suppressed with respect to the deuteron target pointing to significant nuclear final-state interaction effects
Exclusive Leptoproduction of rho^0 Mesons from Hydrogen at Intermediate Virtual Photon Energies
Measurements of the cross section for exclusive virtual-photoproduction of
rho^0 mesons from hydrogen are reported. The data were collected by the HERMES
experiment using 27.5 GeV positrons incident on a hydrogen gas target in the
HERA storage ring. The invariant mass W of the photon-nucleon system ranges
from 4.0 to 6.0 GeV, while the negative squared four-momentum Q^2 of the
virtual photon varies from 0.7 to 5.0 GeV^2. The present data together with
most of the previous data at W > 4 GeV are well described by a model that
infers the W-dependence of the cross section from the dependence on the Bjorken
scaling variable x of the unpolarized structure function for deep-inelastic
scattering. In addition, a model calculation based on Off-Forward Parton
Distributions gives a fairly good account of the longitudinal component of the
rho^0 production cross section for Q^2 > 2 GeV^2.Comment: 10 pages, 6 embedded figures, LaTeX for SVJour(epj) document class.

Photoproduction of mesons off nuclei
Recent results for the photoproduction of mesons off nuclei are reviewed.
These experiments have been performed for two major lines of research related
to the properties of the strong interaction. The investigation of nucleon
resonances requires light nuclei as targets for the extraction of the isospin
composition of the electromagnetic excitations. This is done with quasi-free
meson photoproduction off the bound neutron and supplemented with the
measurement of coherent photoproduction reactions, serving as spin and/or
isospin filters. Furthermore, photoproduction from light and heavy nuclei is a
very efficient tool for the study of the interactions of mesons with nuclear
matter and the in-medium properties of hadrons. Experiments are currently
rapidly developing due to the combination of high quality tagged (and
polarized) photon beams with state-of-the-art 4pi detectors and polarized
targets
Eta, eta-prime photoproduction and electroproduction off nucleons
The photo- and electroproduction of eta, eta-prime mesons on nucleons are
investigated within a relativistic chiral unitary approach based on coupled
channels. The s-wave potentials for electroproduction and meson-baryon
scattering are derived from a chiral effective Lagrangian which includes the
eta-prime as an explicit degree of freedom and incorporates important features
of the underlying QCD Lagrangian such as the axial U(1) anomaly. The effective
potentials are iterated in a Bethe-Salpeter equation and cross sections for
eta, eta-prime photo- and electroproduction from nucleons are obtained. The
results for the eta-prime photoproduction cross section on protons reproduce
the appearance of an S_{11} resonance around 1.9 GeV observed at ELSA. The
inclusion of electromagnetic form factors increases the predicted eta
electroproduction cross sections on the proton, providing a qualitative
explanation for the hard form factor of the photocoupling amplitude observed at
CLAS.Comment: 26 page
