Curating Between the Lines
On this day in May 2013, a search on amazon.com for publications on âcuratingâ yields 292 results. While this number is quite literally miniscule to the curatorial fieldâs much more established older siblings (âart historyâ returns 403,584 results and âart criticismâ returns 97, 507 results), this search indicates two remarkable developments. First of all, the great majority of these books have been published since 2010, a remarkable influx in such a short period of time. Second, they contain..
The timing and magnitude of exchange rate overshooting
Empirical evidence suggests that a monetary shock induces the exchange rate to overshoot its long-run level. The estimated magnitude and timing of the overshooting, however, varies across studies. This paper generates delayed overshooting in a new Keynesian model of a small open economy by incorporating incomplete information about the true nature of the monetary shock. The framework allows for a sensitivity analysis of the overshooting result to underlying structural parameters. It is shown that policy objectives and measures of the economy's sensitivity to exchange rate dynamic affect the timing and magnitude of the overshooting in a predictable manner, suggesting a possible rationale for the cross-study variation of the delayed overshooting Phenomenon. --Exchange rate overshooting,Partial information,Learning
TIR-based dynamic liquid-level and flow-rate sensing and its application on centrifugal microfluidic platforms
For the first time we present a technique for the spatio-temporally resolved localization of liquid-gas interfaces on centrifugal microfluidic platforms based on total internal reflection (TIR) at the channel wall. The simple setup consists of a line laser and a linear image sensor array mounted in a stationary instrument. Apart from identifying the presence of (usually unwanted) gas bubbles, the here described online meniscus detection allows to measure liquid volumes with a high precision of 1.9%. Additionally, flow rates and viscosities (range: 1-10.7 mPa s) can be sensed even during rotation at frequencies up to 30 Hz with a precision of 4.7% and 4.3%, respectively
Convolutional Neural Networks for Epileptic Seizure Prediction
Epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder and an accurate forecast of
seizures would help to overcome the patient's uncertainty and helplessness. In
this contribution, we present and discuss a novel methodology for the
classification of intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) for seizure
prediction. Contrary to previous approaches, we categorically refrain from an
extraction of hand-crafted features and use a convolutional neural network
(CNN) topology instead for both the determination of suitable signal
characteristics and the binary classification of preictal and interictal
segments. Three different models have been evaluated on public datasets with
long-term recordings from four dogs and three patients. Overall, our findings
demonstrate the general applicability. In this work we discuss the strengths
and limitations of our methodology.Comment: accepted for MLESP 201
Ionic Fragmentation Channels in Electron Collisions of Small Molecular Ions
Dissociative Recombination (DR) is one of the most important loss processes of molecular ions in the interstellar medium (IM). Ion storage rings allow to investigate these processes under realistic conditions. At the Heidelberg test storage ring TSR a new detector system was installed within the present work in order to study the DR sub-process of ion pair formation (IPF). The new detector expands the existing electron target setup by the possibility to measure strongly deflected negative ionic fragements. At the TSR such measurements can be performed with a uniquely high energy resolution by independently merging two electron beams with the ion beam. In this work IPF of HD+, H3+ and HF+ has been studied. In the case of HD+ the result of the high resolution experiment shows quantum interferences. Analysis of the quantum oscillations leads to a new understanding of the reaction dynamics. For H3+ it was for the first time possible to distinguish different IPF channels and to detect quantum interferences in the data. Finally the IPF of HF+ was investigated in an energy range, where in previous experiments no conclusive results could be obtained
