    Understanding thio-effects in simple phosphoryl systems : role of solvent effects and nucleophile charge.

    Recent experimental work (J. Org. Chem., 2012, 77, 5829) demonstrated pronounced differences in measured thio-effects for the hydrolysis of (thio)phosphodichloridates by water and hydroxide nucleophiles. In the present work, we have performed detailed quantum chemical calculations of these reactions, with the aim of rationalizing the molecular bases for this discrimination. The calculations highlight the interplay between nucleophile charge and transition state solvation in SN2(P) mechanisms as the basis of these differences, rather than a change in mechanism

    Large NcN_c QCD at non-zero chemical potential

    The general issue of large NcN_c QCD at nonzero chemical potential is considered with a focus on understanding the difference between large NcN_c QCD with an isospin chemical potential and large NcN_c QCD with a baryon chemical potential. A simple diagrammatic analysis analogous to `t Hooft's analysis at μ=0\mu=0 implies that the free energy with a given baryon chemical potential is equal to the free energy with an isospin chemical potential of the same value plus 1/Nc1/N_c corrections. Phenomenologically, these two systems behave quite differently. A scenario to explain this difference in light of the diagrammatic analysis is explored. This scenario is based on a phase transition associated with pion condensation when the isospin chemical potential exceeds mπ/2m_\pi/2; associated with this transition there is breakdown of the 1/Nc1/N_c expansion--in the pion condensed phase there is a distinct 1/Nc1/N_c expansion including a larger set of diagrams. While this scenario is natural, there are a number of theoretical issues which at least superficially challenge it. Most of these can be accommodated. However, the behavior of quenched QCD which raises a number of apparently analogous issues cannot be easily understood completely in terms of an analogous scenario. Thus, the overall issue remains open

    Predictive learning, prediction errors, and attention: evidence from event-related potentials and eye tracking

    Prediction error (‘‘surprise’’) affects the rate of learning: We learn more rapidly about cues for which we initially make incorrect predictions than cues for which our initial predictions are correct. The current studies employ electrophysiological measures to reveal early attentional differentiation of events that differ in their previous involvement in errors of predictive judgment. Error-related events attract more attention, as evidenced by features of event-related scalp potentials previously implicated in selective visual attention (selection negativity, augmented anterior N1). The earliest differences detected occurred around 120 msec after stimulus onset, and distributed source localization (LORETA) indicated that the inferior temporal regions were one source of the earliest differences. In addition, stimuli associated with the production of prediction errors show higher dwell times in an eyetracking procedure. Our data support the view that early attentional processes play a role in human associative learning

    The maximal tubes under the deformations of a class of 3-dimensional hyperbolic cone-manifolds

    Recently, Hodgson and Kerckhoff found a small bound on Dehn surgered 3-manifolds from hyperbolic knots not admitting hyperbolic structures using deformations of hyperbolic cone-manifolds. They asked whether the area normalized meridian length squared of maximal tubular neighborhoods of the singular locus of the cone-manifold is decreasing and that summed with the cone angle squared is increasing as we deform the cone-angles. We confirm this near 0 cone-angles for an infinite family of hyperbolic cone-manifolds obtained by Dehn surgeries along the Whitehead link complements. The basic method is based on explicit holonomy computations using the A-polynomials and finding the maximal tubes. One of the key tool is the Taylor expression of a geometric component of the zero set of the A-polynomial in terms of the cone-angles. We also show a sequence of Taylor expressions for Dehn surgered manifolds converges to one for the limit hyperbolic manifold.Comment: 27 pages, 10 figure

A logically separate and potentially complementary argument is to consider the application of Darwinian principles not only to genes but also to social entities and processes. This idea of extending Darwinian principles was suggested by Darwin himself. Attempts to do this appeared as early as the 1870s and proliferated until the early twentieth century. But such ideas remained dormant in the social sciences from the 1920s until after the Second World War. Some lessons can be learned from this earlier period, particularly concerning the problem of specifying the social units of selection or replication

    Advances in mapping population and demographic characteristics at small area levels

    Temporally and spatially highly resolved information on population characteristics, including demographic profile (e.g. age and sex), ethnicity and socio-economic status (e.g. income, occupation, education), are essential for observational health studies at the small-area level. Time-relevant population data are critical as denominators for health statistics, analytics and epidemiology, to calculate rates or risks of disease. Demographic and socio-economic characteristics are key determinants of health and important confounders in the relationship of environmental contaminants and health. In many countries, census data have long been the source of small-area population denominators and confounder information. A strength of the traditional census model has been its careful design and high level of population coverage, allowing high-quality detailed data to be released for small areas periodically, e.g. every ten years. The timeliness of data, however, becomes a challenge when temporally and spatially highly accurate annual (or even more frequent) data at high spatial resolution 31are needed, for example, for health surveillance and epidemiological studies. Additionally, the approach to collecting demographic population information is changing in the era of openand big data and may eventually evolve to using combinations of administrative and other data, supplemented by surveys. We discuss different approaches to address these challenges including a) the U. S. American Community Survey, a rolling sample of the U.S. population census, b) the use of spatial analysis techniques to compile temporally and spatially high-resolution demographic data, and c) the use of administrative and big data sources as proxies for demographic characteristics

A crucial and as yet unanswered question is whether EDCs have adverse impacts on the sustainability of wildlife populations. There is widespread concern that intersex fish are reproductively compromised, with potential population-level consequences. However, to date, only in vitro sperm quality data are available in support of this hypothesis. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine whether wild endocrine-disrupted fish can compete successfully in a realistic breeding scenario. METHODS: In two competitive breeding experiments using wild roach (Rutilus rutilus), we used DNA microsatellites to assign parentage and thus determine reproductive success of the adults. RESULTS: In both studies, the majority of intersex fish were able to breed, albeit with varying degrees of success. In the first study, where most intersex fish were only mildly feminized, body length was the only factor correlated with reproductive success. In the second study, which included a higher number of more severely intersex fish, reproductive performance was negatively correlated with severity of intersex. The intersex condition reduced reproductive performance by up to 76% for the most feminized individuals in this study, demonstrating a significant adverse effect of intersex on reproductive performance. CONCLUSION: Feminization of male fish is likely to be an important determinant of reproductive performance in rivers where there is a high prevalence of moderately to severely feminized males.Funding for this work was derived through the Endocrine Disruption in Catchments project, which was supported by the U.K. Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs and the U.K. Environment Agency

    The physical determinants of the DNA conformational landscape: an analysis of the potential energy surface of single-strand dinucleotides in the conformational space of duplex DNA

    A multivariate analysis of the backbone and sugar torsion angles of dinucleotide fragments was used to construct a 3D principal conformational subspace (PCS) of DNA duplex crystal structures. The potential energy surface (PES) within the PCS was mapped for a single-strand dinucleotide model using an empirical energy function. The low energy regions of the surface encompass known DNA forms and also identify previously unclassified conformers. The physical determinants of the conformational landscape are found to be predominantly steric interactions within the dinucleotide backbone, with medium-dependent backbone-base electrostatic interactions serving to tune the relative stability of the different local energy minima. The fidelity of the PES to duplex DNA properties is validated through a correspondence to the conformational distribution of duplex DNA crystal structures and the reproduction of observed sequence specific propensities for the formation of A-form DNA. The utility of the PES is demonstrated through its succinct and accurate description of complex conformational processes in simulations of duplex DNA. The study suggests that stereochemical considerations of the nucleic acid backbone play a role in determining conformational preferences of DNA which is analogous to the role of local steric interactions in determining polypeptide secondary structure

    'The heart of what we do': policies on teaching, learning and assessment in the learning and skills sector

    One of the stated aims of government policy in England is to put teaching, training,and learning at the heart of the learning and skills system. This paper provides a critical review of policies on teaching, learning and assessment in the learning and skills sector over the past five years. It draws upon data collected and analysed in the early stages of an ESRC-funded Teaching and Learning Research Programme project. Using evidence from policy sources, we argue that despite policy rhetoric about devolution of responsibility to the 'front line', the dominant 'images' that government has of putting teaching, learning and assessment at the heart of the Learning and Skills Sector involves a narrow concept of learning and skills; an idealisation of learner agency lacking an appreciation of the pivotal role of the learner/tutor relationship and a top-down view of change in which central government agencies are relied on to secure education standards
