    Advanced Solar Power Systems

    Get PDF
The Advanced Solar Power System (ASPS) concentrator uses a technically sophisticated design and extensive tooling to produce very efficient (80 to 90%) and versatile energy supply equipment which is inexpensive to manufacture and requires little maintenance. The advanced optical design has two 10th order, generalized aspheric surfaces in a Cassegrainian configuration which gives outstanding performance and is relatively insensitive to temperature changes and wind loading. Manufacturing tolerances also have been achieved. The key to the ASPS is the direct absorption of concentrated sunlight in the working fluid by radiative transfers in a black body cavity. The basic ASPS design concepts, efficiency, optical system, and tracking and focusing controls are described

The Rhetorical Roots of Communication Centers

    Get PDF
This chapter traces the rich rhetorical roots of the creation of the modern communication center, following the lead of Sproule and Farrell as well as the postcard author. Placing this contemporary learning enhancement in the context of that abundant history reminds us that the precepts associated with the discipline of rhetoric and shared in communication center consultations are as classic as they are classical, and the questions deliberated by scholars and practitioners of this ancient art are timeless. The postcard\u27s photo of the venerated Athenian ruins offers both a symbolic and explicit link between the legacy of the paideia of antiquity and the efforts of communication center directors and their staffs

Constructing Community: An Exhibition of the Voices of Goodloetown

    Get PDF
This project presents four distinct voices of a Lexington community through the physical manifestation of an exhibition. The voices, consisting of maps, scholars, the press, and local residents, will be extracted and displayed as separate entities. It will be the role of the audience to put the abstracted pieces back together and to construct Goodloetown as a community. The humanities moves forward from feelings that are universally human and understands their meaning through investigation expressed through the arts. By specifically addressing two areas of social activity within Goodloe, the church and the garage, the project documents a fraction of the incredible wealth of humanity found in Goodloetown today. Although this incredibly vibrant community survives in the shadow of Thoroughbred Park despite an historic lack of attention from the surrounding city, it is now in danger of being displaced and ultimately destroyed

Georgia Newspaper Coverage Discovering Conventional Practices of the \u27Cherokee Question\u27: Prelude to the Removal, 1828-1832

This thesis analyzes the specific journalistic conventional practices of newspapers in Georgia as they focused on the “Cherokee Question” in 1828-1832, the critical period during which the state considered the removal of the Cherokees from Georgia. The research compares news and opinion texts in five Georgia newspapers with news and opinion texts in the newspaper launched by the Cherokee nation in 1828,the Cherokee Phoenix. While the conventional practices in the white-owned press tended to legitimize removal, the Phoenix adopted some of the same conventions in order to defend and negotiate Cherokee culture and issues

Training Speech Center Consultants: Moving Forward with a Backward Glance

    Get PDF
The commitment to a student-staffed speech center is at least twofold: though critical space allocation decisions as well as equipment purchase and placement required for successful operation are necessary and necessarily draw attention, the same kind of concentrated and thorough reflection is needed in considerations of staff training. Peer consulting, to be effective, calls for training that is intensive and extensive, theoretical and applied, but it should also prepare student consultants to faithfully reflect the nature, scope and state of the rhetorical art. Speech center consultants are better prepared to meet a greater variety of requests for assistance if they comprehend the study of rhetoric as a scholarly discipline and the character of rhetoric that spans disciplines and extends beyond the discourse of the academy

Winning with Good Kids: A Virginia Basketball Retrospective

When I arrived on the Grounds of Mr. Jefferson’s academical village 30 years ago, two readily apparent conditions seemed to dominate if not define the life of the University. The first was cultural. A year of coeducation had been successfully completed; as planned, the percentage of women arriving in the fall of 1971 exceeded the percentage of the previous entering class. The mixed feelings that so often accompany change were felt at the University. Even those who favored coeducation understood the nostalgia of others. Indeed, there would be no turning back. Shops on the Corner, hours at Memorial Gym, selected dormitory conversions all reflected the new demographics at Virginia, and if not every member of the faculty and student body at “the old U” was elated at the prospect of having women as four-year students and classmates, neither were they inhospitable. These were, after all, Virginia gentlemen; relations were, at worst, polite. The second condition was easier to discern, for it was one of the heart. The inhabitants of Mr. Jefferson’s University, his treasured Charlottesville and Albemarle County were a people crazy in love. They had, to a person it seemed, become enamored with basketball and the players who wore the Virginia uniform. Having advanced beyond all expectations in 1970-71 Atlantic Coast Conference play, this team had achieved the unprecedented: it had been ranked in the nation’s top twenty. Life in central Virginia has not been the same since

Wisdom to Know the Difference: The Rhetoric of Pat Nixon

    Get PDF
Henriette Wyeth Hurd painted the official portrait of Patricia Nixon. The woman depicted is serene, almost sad. She appears fragile, yet brave. Above all, the face that gazes from the canvas understands--the wisdom in her eyes reflects that sense of tribulation bequeathed by experience. Both the painting and the subject reflect calm at the center. It is an insightful portrayal of the American first lady known to the world as Pat
