    NtGCM User's Manual: 1.1 (High Pressure High Temperature Laser based) Nanotube Growth Chamber Monitor

    This manual describes the installation and use of NtGCM software. NtGCM is software designed for monitoring the growth of nanotubes in a high temperature and high pressure chamber using a laser*. NtGCM software monitors a dozen dierent parameters that are important to understanding the growth of the nanomaterials including the laser input power, the temperature at eight separate locations inside and outside the growth chamber, as well as the pressure and ow rate of the gaseous media that control the environment in the chamber. The measurements are all made in real time. The program features a robust user account management layer and a rich data display manager that allows plotted data, displayed units and other parameters to be changed on the y for the operator's convenience

    Critical Crossover Between Yosida-Kondo Dominant Regime and Magnetic Frustration Dominant Regime in the System of a Magnetic Trimer on a Metal Surface

    Quantum Monte Carlo simulations were carried out for the system of a magnetic trimer on a metal surface. The magnetic trimer is arranged in two geometric configurations, viz., isosceles and equilateral triangles. The calculated spectral density and magnetic susceptibility show the existence of two phases: Yosida-Kondo dominant phase and magnetic frustration dominant phase. Furthermore, a critical transition between these two phases can be induced by changing the configuration of the magnetic trimers from isosceles to equilateral triangle.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in J.     Biofilm Viscoelasticity and Nutrient Source Location Control Biofilm Growth Rate, Migration Rate, and Morphology in Shear Flow

    We present a numerical model to simulate the growth and deformation of a viscoelastic biofilm in shear flow under different nutrient conditions. The mechanical interaction between the biofilm and the fluid is computed using the Immersed Boundary Method with viscoelastic parameters determined a priori from measurements reported in the literature. Biofilm growth occurs at the biofilm-fluid interface by a stochastic rule that depends on the local nutrient concentration. We compare the growth, migration, and morphology of viscoelastic biofilms with a common relaxation time of 18 min over the range of elastic moduli 10–1000 Pa in different nearby nutrient source configurations. Simulations with shear flow and an upstream or a downstream nutrient source indicate that soft biofilms grow more if nutrients are downstream and stiff biofilms grow more if nutrients are upstream. Also, soft biofilms migrate faster than stiff biofilms toward a downstream nutrient source, and although stiff biofilms migrate toward an upstream nutrient source, soft biofilms do not. Simulations without nutrients show that on the time scale of several hours, soft biofilms develop irregular structures at the biofilm-fluid interface, but stiff biofilms deform little. Our results agree with the biophysical principle that biofilms can adapt to their mechanical and chemical environment by modulating their viscoelastic properties. We also compare the behavior of a purely elastic biofilm to a viscoelastic biofilm with the same elastic modulus of 50 Pa. We find that the elastic biofilm underestimates growth rates and downstream migration rates if the nutrient source is downstream, and it overestimates growth rates and upstream migration rates if the nutrient source is upstream. Future modeling can use our comparison to identify errors that can occur by simulating biofilms as purely elastic structures

    It is difficult to track the philosophy foundation and epistemology of systemic functional grammar (SFG) formulated by Halliday in the 1980s as this kind of grammar views language as a systemic resource for meaning. Besides, it has had global impacts on linguistics and flourished in contemporary linguistic theory. Anyone who is familiar with Halliday\u27s work realizes that his SFG is an approach designed to analyze English texts. Halliday (1994: xv) explicitly states that “to construct a grammar for purposes of text analysis: one that would make it possible to say sensible and useful things about any text, spoken or written, in modern English.” The aim of this study is not about the applicability of SFG to text analysis as many researchers and scholars do.     Economic evaluation of apixaban for the prevention of stroke in non-valvular atrial fibrillation in the Netherlands

    BACKGROUND: Stroke prevention is the main goal of treating patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Vitamin-K antagonists (VKAs) present an effective treatment in stroke prevention, however, the risk of bleeding and the requirement for regular coagulation monitoring are limiting their use. Apixaban is a novel oral anticoagulant associated with significantly lower hazard rates for stroke, major bleedings and treatment discontinuations, compared to VKAs.OBJECTIVE: To estimate the cost-effectiveness of apixaban compared to VKAs in non-valvular AF patients in the Netherlands.METHODS: Previously published lifetime Markov model using efficacy data from the ARISTOTLE and the AVERROES trial was modified to reflect the use of oral anticoagulants in the Netherlands. Dutch specific costs, baseline population stroke risk and coagulation monitoring levels were incorporated. Univariate, probabilistic sensitivity and scenario analyses on the impact of different coagulation monitoring levels were performed on the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER).RESULTS: Treatment with apixaban compared to VKAs resulted in an ICER of €10,576 per quality adjusted life year (QALY). Those findings correspond with lower number of strokes and bleedings associated with the use of apixaban compared to VKAs. Univariate sensitivity analyses revealed model sensitivity to the absolute stroke risk with apixaban and treatment discontinuations risks with apixaban and VKAs. The probability that apixaban is cost-effective at a willingness-to-pay threshold of €20,000/QALY was 68%. Results of the scenario analyses on the impact of different coagulation monitoring levels were quite robust.CONCLUSIONS: In patients with non-valvular AF, apixaban is likely to be a cost-effective alternative to VKAs in the Netherlands.</p

    Prototype edge-grown nanowire sensor array for the real-time monitoring and classification of multiple gases

    The monitoring and classification of different gases using a single resistive semiconductor sensor are challenging because of the similar response characteristics. An array of separated sensors can be used as an electronic nose, but such arrays have a bulky structure and complex fabrication processes. Herein, we easily fabricated a gas-sensor array based on edge-grown SnO2 nanowires for the real-time monitoring and classification of multiple gases. The array comprised four sensors and was designed on a glass substrate. SnO2 nanowires were grown on-chip from the edge of electrodes, made contact together, and acted as sensing elements. This method was advantageous over the post-synthesis technique because the SnO2 nanowires were directly grown from the edge of the electrodes rather than on the surface. Accordingly, damage to the electrode was avoided by alloying Sn with Pt at a high growth temperature. The sensing characteristics of the sensor array were further examined for different gases, including methanol, isopropanol, ethanol, ammonia, hydrogen sulphide and hydrogen.
