Chemical LTD, but not LTP, induces transient accumulation of gelsolin in dendritic spines

Synaptic plasticity underlies central brain functions, such as learning. Ca2+ signaling is involved in both strengthening and weakening of synapses, but it is still unclear how one signal molecule can induce two opposite outcomes. By identifying molecules, which can distinguish between signaling leading to weakening or strengthening, we can improve our understanding of how synaptic plasticity is regulated. Here, we tested gelsolin's response to the induction of chemical long-term potentiation (cLTP) or long-term depression (cLTD) in cultured rat hippocampal neurons. We show that gelsolin relocates from the dendritic shaft to dendritic spines upon cLTD induction while it did not show any relocalization upon cLTP induction. Dendritic spines are small actin-rich protrusions on dendrites, where LTD/LTP-responsive excitatory synapses are located. We propose that the LTD-induced modest - but relatively long-lasting - elevation of Ca2+ concentration increases the affinity of gelsolin to F-actin. As F-actin is enriched in dendritic spines, it is probable that increased affinity to F-actin induces the relocalization of gelsolin.Peer reviewe

Low-Density Lipoprotein Internalization, Degradation and Receptor Recycling Along Membrane Contact Sites

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) internalization, degradation, and receptor recycling is a fundamental process underlying hypercholesterolemia, a high blood cholesterol concentration, affecting more than 40% of the western population. Membrane contact sites influence endosomal dynamics, plasma membrane lipid composition, and cellular cholesterol distribution. However, if we focus on LDL-related trafficking events we mostly discuss them in an isolated fashion, without cellular context. It is our goal to change this perspective and to highlight that all steps from LDL internalization to receptor recycling are likely associated with dynamic membrane contact sites in which endosomes engage with the endoplasmic reticulum and other organelles.Peer reviewe

Trapped-mode excitation in all-dielectric metamaterials with loss and gain

Non-Hermitian photonics based on combining loss and gain media within a single optical system provides a number of approaches to control and generate the flow of light. In this paper, we show that by introducing non-Hermitian perturbation into the system with loss and gain constituents, the high-quality resonances known as trapped modes can be excited without the need to change the symmetry of the unit cell geometry. To demonstrate this idea, we consider a widely used all-dielectric planar metamaterial whose unit cell consists of a pair of rectangular nanoantennas made of ordinal (with loss) and doped (with gain) silicon. Since the quality factor of the trapped-mode resonance can be controlled by changing both spatial symmetry and non-Hermiticity, varying loss and gain allows us to compensate for the influence of asymmetry and restore the quality factor of the localized mode. The results obtained suggest new ways to achieve high-quality resonances in non-Hermitian metamaterials promising for many practical applications in nanophotonics.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

СТАЛИЙ РОЗВИТОК УКРАЇНИ: МОЖЛИВОСТІ ТА ЗАГРОЗИ

The article explores the opportunities and threats that arise in connection with the transition of Ukraine to sustainable development. A comparative analysis of the indicators of sustainable development of Ukraine with similar indicators of the countries in the comparative group is carried out. There have been selected countries meeting a number of common requirements, namely Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Georgia and Moldova. The study has proved the hypothesis of applying the Beyond GDP methodological approach to assessing sustainable development. There is a relationship between the index of economic freedom and the indicator of corruption perception due to the fact that the existence of administrative barriers reduces economic freedom and increases tolerance to corruption in the society. There have been analyzed the components of life quality and life safety and described the profile of Ukraine with the indicators of sustainable development. The opportunities and threats that will accompany the transition to sustainable development of Ukraine have been identified. Ukraine has significant innovative and economic potential to achieve. The main threats are increasing the intensity of conflicts, reducing corruption perception, increasing state fragility and state instability.В статье исследованы возможности и угрозы, возникающие в связи переходом Украины на путь устойчивого развития. Проведен анализ показателей устойчивого развития Украины с аналогичными показателями стран компаративной группы. В процессе исследования доказана гипотеза о возможности применения методологического подхода «за пределами ВВП» для оценки устойчивого развития. Установлено существование зависимости между индексом экономической свободы и показателем чувствительности к коррупции. Описан профиль Украины в показателях устойчивого развития. Определены возможности и угрозы, которые будут сопровождать переход к устойчивому развитию Украины. Установлено, что Украина имеет значительный инновационный потенциал, который возможно реализовать. Основные угрозы представляют рост интенсивности конфликтов, уменьшение чувствительности к коррупции и государственная нестабильность.У статті досліджено можливості та загрози, що виникають у зв’язку переходом України на шлях сталого розвитку. Проведено аналіз показників сталого розвитку України з аналогічними показниками країн компаративної групи. У процесі дослідження доведена гіпотеза про можливість застосування методологічного підходу «за межами ВВП» для оцінки сталого розвитку. Встановлено існування залежності між індексом економічної свободи та показником чутливості до корупції. Описано профіль України у показниках сталого розвитку. Визначені можливості та загрози, що супроводжуватимуть перехід до сталого розвитку України. Встановлено, що Україна має значний інноваційний потенціал, який можливо реалізувати. Основні загрози становлять зростання інтенсивності конфліктів, зменшення чутливості до корупції та державна нестабільність
