Persistent and Reversible Phase Control in GdMnO3_3 near the Phase Boundary

We have investigated temperature and magnetic-field dependence of dielectric properties in the orthorhombic GdMnO3_3 single crystal which is located near the phase boundary between the ferroelectric/spiral-antiferromagnetic phase and the paraelectric/AA-type-antiferromagnetic one. In this compound, strong phase competition between these two phases results in a unique phase diagram with large temperature and magnetic-field hystereses. Based on the phase diagram, we have successfully demonstrated the persistent and reversible phase switching between them by application of magnetic fields.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, proceeding of 25th International Conference on Low Temperature Physics LT2

Anomalous Coexistence of Ferroelectric Phases (PaP\parallel a and PcP\parallel c) in Orthorhombic Eu1y_{1-y}Yy_yMnO3_3 (y>0.5y>0.5) Crystals

We have investigated the magnetic and dielectric properties of orthorhombic Eu1y_{1-y}Yy_yMnO3_3 (0y0.60\leq y\leq 0.6) single crystals without the presence of the 4ff magnetic moments of the rare-earth ions. In y0.2y\geq 0.2, the magnetic-structure driven ferroelectricity is observed. The ferroelectric transition temperature is steeply reducing with increasing yy. In y0.52y\geq 0.52, two ferroelectric phases (PaP\parallel a and PcP\parallel c) are coexistent at low temperatures. In these phases, ferroelectricity has different origin, which is evidenced by the distinctive poling-electric-field dependence of electric polarization. Namely, the electric polarization along the c axis (PcP_c) is easily saturated by a poling electric field, therefore PcP_c is caused by the bcbc spiral antiferromagnetic order. On the other hand, the electric polarization along the a axis (PaP_a) is probably attributed to the collinear EE-type antiferromagnetic order, because PaP_a is unsaturated even in a poling field of 10610^6 V/m.Comment: 10 pages, 4figures, to be published in Journal of the Physical Society of Japa

In this study, it is examined whether the Zollner illusion effect is useful for apparel design, or not. Zollner illusion effect seems parallel lines to slant. Applying this effect to the apparel design, we may have the impression that it looks the straight body line to incline. As a result, we get the conclusion that the Zollner illusion effect is slightly useful for giving impression of slender waist

A distinct effect of transient and sustained upregulation of cellular factor XIII in the goldfish retina and optic nerve on optic nerve regeneration

Unlike in mammals, fish retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) have a capacity to repair their axons even after optic nerve transection. In our previous study, we isolated a tissue type transglutaminase (TG) from axotomized goldfish retina. The levels of retinal TG (TG R) mRNA increased in RGCs 1-6 weeks after nerve injury to promote optic nerve regeneration both in vitro and in vivo. In the present study, we screened other types of TG using specific FITC-labeled substrate peptides to elucidate the implications for optic nerve regeneration. This screening showed that the activity of only cellular coagulation factor XIII (cFXIII) was increased in goldfish optic nerves just after nerve injury. We therefore cloned a full-length cDNA clone of FXIII A subunit (FXIII-A) and studied temporal changes of FXIII-A expression in goldfish optic nerve and retina during regeneration. FXIII-A mRNA was initially detected at the crush site of the optic nerve 1 h after injury; it was further observed in the optic nerve and achieved sustained long-term expression (1-40 days after nerve injury). The cells producing FXIII-A were astrocytes/microglial cells in the optic nerve. By contrast, the expression of FXIII-A mRNA and protein was upregulated in RGCs for a shorter time (3-10 days after nerve injury). Overexpression of FXIII-A in RGCs achieved by lipofection induced significant neurite outgrowth from unprimed retina, but not from primed retina with pretreatment of nerve injury. Addition of extracts of optic nerves with injury induced significant neurite outgrowth from primed retina, but not from unprimed retina without pretreatment of nerve injury. The transient increase of cFXIII in RGCs promotes neurite sprouting from injured RGCs, whereas the sustained increase of cFXIII in optic nerves facilitates neurite elongation from regrowing axons. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. An Initial Step of GAS-Containing Autophagosome-Like Vacuoles Formation Requires Rab7

Group A streptococcus (GAS; Streptococcus pyogenes) is a common pathogen that invades non-phagocytic human cells via endocytosis. Once taken up by cells, it escapes from the endocytic pathway to the cytoplasm, but here it is contained within a membrane-bound structure termed GAS-containing autophagosome-like vacuoles (GcAVs). The autophagosome marker GFP-LC3 associates with GcAVs, and other components of the autophagosomal pathway are involved in GcAV formation. However, the mechanistic relationship between GcAV and canonical autophagy is largely unknown. Here, we morphologically analyzed GcAV formation in detail. Initially, a small, GFP-LC3-positive GcAV sequesters each streptococcal chain, and these then coalesce into a single, large GcAV. Expression of a dominant-negative form of Rab7 or RNAi-mediated knockdown of Rab7 prevented the initial formation of small GcAV structures. Our results demonstrate that mechanisms of GcAV formation includes not only the common machinery of autophagy, but also Rab7 as an additional component, which is dispensable in canonical autophagosome formation

The Quiescent Intracluster Medium in the Core of the Perseus Cluster

Clusters of galaxies are the most massive gravitationally-bound objects in the Universe and are still forming. They are thus important probes of cosmological parameters and a host of astrophysical processes. Knowledge of the dynamics of the pervasive hot gas, which dominates in mass over stars in a cluster, is a crucial missing ingredient. It can enable new insights into mechanical energy injection by the central supermassive black hole and the use of hydrostatic equilibrium for the determination of cluster masses. X-rays from the core of the Perseus cluster are emitted by the 50 million K diffuse hot plasma filling its gravitational potential well. The Active Galactic Nucleus of the central galaxy NGC1275 is pumping jetted energy into the surrounding intracluster medium, creating buoyant bubbles filled with relativistic plasma. These likely induce motions in the intracluster medium and heat the inner gas preventing runaway radiative cooling; a process known as Active Galactic Nucleus Feedback. Here we report on Hitomi X-ray observations of the Perseus cluster core, which reveal a remarkably quiescent atmosphere where the gas has a line-of-sight velocity dispersion of 164+/-10 km/s in a region 30-60 kpc from the central nucleus. A gradient in the line-of-sight velocity of 150+/-70 km/s is found across the 60 kpc image of the cluster core. Turbulent pressure support in the gas is 4% or less of the thermodynamic pressure, with large scale shear at most doubling that estimate. We infer that total cluster masses determined from hydrostatic equilibrium in the central regions need little correction for turbulent pressure.Comment: 31 pages, 11 Figs, published in Nature July
