    Solid-State Reaction of Nickel Thin Film Deposited on Titanium

    Diffusion couples prepared by ion plating of 25 to 200nm thick Ni film onto tita-nium suhstrates have been annealed for up to 16h at 623~773K. The interdiffusion and the subsequent solid-state reaction behavior is investigated by X-rays using a Seeman-Bohlin diffractometer. The formation of an amorphous phase is observed upon thermal annealing over a temperature range of 643 to 773K. The formation of the intermetallic compounds of Ni3Ti and NiTi2 following the amorphous phase are also observed upon thermal annealing over temperature ranges of 658 to 688K for Ni3Ti and of 658 to 773K for NiTi2. Dataon relative integrated intensities of X-ray refl.ections are used to determine thethicknesses of these phases as a function of time, temperature, and de-posited Ni film thickness. In the case where the thickness of deposited Ni film is 100nm, the solid-state reaction proceeds most rapidly resulting in the formation of the thickest amorphous phase of 34nm upon thermal annealing for 1h at 678K

    The impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on hospital admissions for alcohol-related liver disease and pancreatitis in Japan.

    COVID-19流行がアルコール関連の肝疾患・膵炎による入院に与えた影響を検証. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2021-07-14.During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, there have been health concerns related to alcohol use and misuse. We aimed to examine the population-level change in cases of alcohol-related liver disease and pancreatitis that required admission during the COVID-19 epidemic by interrupted time series (ITS) analysis using claims data. We defined the period from April 2020, when the Japanese government declared a state of emergency, as the beginning of the COVID-19 epidemic. This ITS analysis included 3, 026, 389 overall admissions and 10, 242 admissions for alcohol-related liver disease or pancreatitis from 257 hospitals between July 2018 and June 2020. The rate of admissions per 1000 admissions during the COVID-19 epidemic period (April 2020–June 2020) was 1.2 times (rate ratio: 1.22, 95% confidence interval: 1.12–1.33) compared to the pre-epidemic period. Analyses stratified by sex revealed that the increases in admission rates of alcohol-related liver disease or pancreatitis for females were higher than for males during the COVID-19 epidemic period. The COVID-19 epidemic in Japan might associates an increase in hospital admissions for alcohol-related liver disease and pancreatitis. Our study could support the concern of alcohol consumption and health problems during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Pemphigus vulgaris as an immune-related adverse event in recurrent metastatic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma treated with ipilimumab plus nivolumab: a case report and literature review

    Ipilimumab plus nivolumab therapy is approved for patients with unresectable advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Although a combination of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), compared to conventional chemotherapy, can improve overall survival in patients with advanced ESCC, this increases the incidence of immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Here, we describe an ESCC case that developed pemphigus vulgaris (PV), an extremely rare cutaneous irAE, during ipilimumab plus nivolumab treatment. The patient achieved a partial response to treatment. The PV was successfully managed after the cessation of ipilimumab and the use of a topical steroid. We should thus re-treat ESCC with nivolumab monotherapy. In the era of ICIs as standard cancer therapeutics, diagnostic criteria for blistering diseases need to be established to properly manage patients with cutaneous irAEs

    Identification of novel proteins differentially expressed in pluripotent embryonic stem cells and differentiated cells

    Mammalian pluripotent stem cells possess properties of self-renewal and pluripotency. These abilities are maintained by the strict regulation of pluripotent stem cell-specific transcription factor network and unique properties of chromatin in the stem cells. Although these major signaling pathways robustly control the characteristics of stem cells, other regulatory factors, such as metabolic pathways, are also known to modulate stem cell proliferation and differentiation. In this study, we fractionated protein samples from mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells cultured with or without the leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF). Protein expression was quantified by 2-dimensional differential gel electrophoresis (2D-DIGE). In total, 44 proteins were identified as being differentially expressed in the pluripotent stem cells and the differentiated cells. Surprisingly, half of the identified proteins were the proteins localized in mitochondria, which supply cellular energy and regulate cell cycle, development, and cell death. Some of these identified proteins are involved in the metabolic function and the regulation of pluripotency. Further analysis of the identified proteins could provide new information for the manipulation of pluripotency in ES cells

    International Pellet Watch: global monitoring of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in coastal waters. 1. Initial phase data on PCBs, DDTs, and HCHs

    Samples of polyethylene pellets were collected at 30 beaches from 17 countries and analyzed for organochlorine compounds. PCB concentrations in the pellets were highest on US coasts, followed by western Europe and Japan, and were lower in tropical Asia, southern Africa and Australia. This spatial pattern reflected regional differences in the usage of PCBs and was positively correlated with data from Mussel Watch, another monitoring approach. DDTs showed high concentrations on the US west coast and in Vietnam. In Vietnam, DDT was predominant over its metabolites (DDE and DDD), suggesting the principal source may be current usage of the pesticide for malaria control. High concentrations of pesticide HCHs were detected in the pellets from southern Africa, suggesting current usage of the pesticides in southern Africa. This study demonstrates the utility and feasibility of the International Pellet Watch approach to monitor POPs at a global scale

    A Genome-Wide Association Study Identified AFF1 as a Susceptibility Locus for Systemic Lupus Eyrthematosus in Japanese

    Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that causes multiple organ damage. Although recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have contributed to discovery of SLE susceptibility genes, few studies has been performed in Asian populations. Here, we report a GWAS for SLE examining 891 SLE cases and 3,384 controls and multi-stage replication studies examining 1,387 SLE cases and 28,564 controls in Japanese subjects. Considering that expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) have been implicated in genetic risks for autoimmune diseases, we integrated an eQTL study into the results of the GWAS. We observed enrichments of cis-eQTL positive loci among the known SLE susceptibility loci (30.8%) compared to the genome-wide SNPs (6.9%). In addition, we identified a novel association of a variant in the AF4/FMR2 family, member 1 (AFF1) gene at 4q21 with SLE susceptibility (rs340630; P = 8.3×10−9, odds ratio = 1.21). The risk A allele of rs340630 demonstrated a cis-eQTL effect on the AFF1 transcript with enhanced expression levels (P<0.05). As AFF1 transcripts were prominently expressed in CD4+ and CD19+ peripheral blood lymphocytes, up-regulation of AFF1 may cause the abnormality in these lymphocytes, leading to disease onset
