Villagers and Archaeologists: An Examination of Past Behaviors at the Barton Site (21GD02)
After a 40 year hiatus, excavations at the Bartron site (21GD02) resumed from May 2008 through June 2008 with new research questions. The primary impetus for this research was an investigation into the nature of the reported wall trench structure (Feature 13), one of the characteristics of the site previously cited as evidence of Mississippian contact or influence in the Red Wing Locality. This structure was hypothesized to be part of Pierre Charles Le Sueur\u27s 1694/95 overwintering post on the southern end of Prairie Island. When excavated three centimeters below the previously excavated depth, the proposed wall trench structure was determined to be feature blur from the tops of at least three Oneota pits. Contexts were separated into primary and secondary contexts. Primary context is defined as undisturbed soil and features; secondary context is defined as the backfill from the 1968 excavation unit (Feature 10) that encompassed the reported wall trench structure. An interpretive garbology theoretical framework was used to analyze both primary and secondary contexts for evidence of past behaviors with a focus on reclamation, loss, and discard behaviors. The Oneota pit features examined showed aspects of loss and refuse disposal of primary, secondary, and ad hoc refuse. Archaeological methods were used on the secondary context, which was generated by archaeological behavior in 1968 in the absence of explicit field methodology. It was determined that a half or one inch mesh screen was used to filter soil in 1968; this conclusion is preliminary because of the small sample size. Other clarifications from the 2008 excavation include diagnostic pottery, a Late Woodland component, and radiocarbon dates. Diagnostic pottery from the 2008 excavations included a mix of Link and Bartron Phase pottery and the Angelo Punctated type. There was a larger than expected Late Woodland component, which remains unexamined. High precision radiocarbon dates place Feature Three/Five to circa cal. AD. 1255 +/- 30 years and circa cal. AD. 1280 +/- 30 years. Feature Seven dates to circa cal. AD. 1260 +/- 30 years and circa cal. AD. 1270 +/- 30 years

The present work aims to show a part of the poetic work of the Brazilan writer Manuel Bandeira, who inspired the creation of a varied chamber repertoire by several Brazilian composers. There are six chapters with the inclusion of an analysis of musical pieces prepared for a recital, forming part of this Master’s Project. In the first chapter, the focus is on the relationship between the poet and music. From his first references as a writer to the evident influence of language and musical themes throughout his poetic work. The chapter also discusses the trajectory of chamber music in Brazil and the birth of the Brazilian Modernist Movement responsible for developing a nationalist trend that would influence a whole generation of artists and connect Manuel Bandeira to many composers of the time. In the second chapter, the highlight goes to the composer Heitor VillaLobos, Bandeira’s first musical partner, author of important songs from the Brazilan vocal repertoire. The third chapter is dedicated to the friendship and musical partnership between the writer and the composer Jayme Ovalle, author of the famous song Azulão. In the fourth chapter, the Brazilian roots are planted in the songs resulting the writer’s partnership with the composer Francisco Mignone. The fifth chapter, relates the musical reinterpretation made with some of the most important poems of the poet’s work musiced in different ways by different composers. In addition, the composition based on his most famous poem Vou-me embora pra Pasárgada. The sixth and last chapter deals with the musical analysis of the sixteen chamber songs chosen for the recital in order to present an overview of the vocal work carried out from Manuel Bandeira’s poetic-musical genius painting a picture with the different colors of the Brazilian chamber music

Integrating Statistical Methods in Engineering Technology Courses
Statistical methods and procedures are very important in engineering applications. In most of the engineering fields electronic devices are used as sensing and controlling components. Lack of proper calibration of these devices and of performance analysis using different statistical methods may lead to erroneous measurements and results. In medical or manufacturing areas such errors in the experimental results could be catastrophic. Applying different statistical tests and procedures enhance the quality of engineering work. Traditionally, most engineering curricula have at least one required course in applied statistics in engineering, but that is not generally the case in engineering technology programs. Most of the engineering technology BS graduates work as field engineers and collect the data from different physical processes and do data analysis to validate the systems performances. Exposure to statistical methods use and data analysis will provide technology graduates with valuable skills in the current high-tech job market. This paper focuses on how statistical analysis and methods using hand calculations and software tools can be integrated in undergraduate engineering technology courses, enhancing the hands-on approach of real engineering projects with software assisted data analysis. Learning the skills of collecting experimental data from real processes and performing statistical analysis on it is the effective approach of solving engineering problems, and it provides higher learning outputs than simulation-based approach. Specifically, integration of statistical analysis was introduced in an industrial instrumentation class, in which the lab component included the use of various sensors and other measurement instruments. By the end of the class, students demonstrated newly acquired statistical skills by performing sensor calibration and they also applied simple linear regression analysis model on the experimental dat
