    Whirl and Stall Flutter Simulation Using CFD

    This paper presents recent research on numerical methods for whirl and stall flutter using computational fluid dynamics. The method involves coupling of the HMB3 CFD solver of the University of Glasgow and a NASTRAN derived structural model. Based upon a literature survey, a significant amount of research has been conducted on the numerical investigation of tiltrotors, with a focus on the XV-15 and V-22 aircraft. Within this paper, the coupling procedure is presented along with a steady CFD computation to highlight the accuracy of the high-fidelity method. In addition to this, a simple method is used to investigate the whirl flutter boundary of a standard propeller and the XV-15 blade

    A Time-Marching Aeroelastic Method Applied to Propeller Flutter

    A time-marching aeroelastic method developed for the study of propeller flutter is presented and validated. Propeller flutter can take many forms with stall, whirl and classical flutter being the primary responses. These types of flutter require accurate capture of the non-linear aerodynamics associated with propeller blades. Stall flutter in particular, due to the highly detached nature of the flow, needs detailed unsteady flow modelling. With the development of modern propeller designs potentially adjusting the flutter boundary and the development of faster computing power, CFD is required to ensure accurate capture of aerodynamics.     Numerical investigation of a two-bladed propeller inflow at yaw

    The development of faster computing power and nonintrusive experimental techniques has allowed for the advancement in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) validation and the greater understanding of aerodynamic conditions previously deemed too extreme to accurately measure. To this end, a numerical study is conducted that focuses on a propeller at yaw. Current low-order methods are reliant upon an accurate inflow profile to determine overall blade loading patterns. To improve such methods, CFD can be used to determine an initial inflow profile from which to conduct additional lower-order calculations. Therefore, to ensure that CFD is able to accurately capture yawed inflow profiles, a validation study is conducted that compares numerical simulations against experiments. Good agreement is found between the two methods, and subsequently the azimuthal variation in skin friction and induced angle of attack, as a result of the yawed conditions, is analyzed

    Behavior of the breathing pyrochlore lattice Ba<sub>3</sub>Yb<sub>2</sub>Zn<sub>5</sub>O<sub>11</sub> in applied magnetic field

    The breathing pyrochlore lattice material Ba3Yb2Zn5O11 exists in the nearly decoupled limit, in contrast to most other well-studied breathing pyrochlore compounds. As a result, it constitutes a useful platform to benchmark theoretical calculations of exchange interactions in insulating Yb3+ magnets. Here we study Ba3Yb2Zn5O11 at low temperatures in applied magnetic fields as a further probe of the physics of this model system. Experimentally, we consider the behavior of polycrystalline samples of Ba3Yb2Zn5O11 with a combination of inelastic neutron scattering and heat capacity measurements down to 75 mK and up to fields of 10 T. Consistent with previous work, inelastic neutron scattering finds a level crossing near 3 T, but no significant dispersion of the spin excitations is detected up to the highest applied fields. Refinement of the theoretical model previously determined at zero field can reproduce much of the inelastic neutron scattering spectra and specific heat data. A notable exception is a low temperature peak in the specific heat at similar to 0.1 K. This may indicate the scale of interactions between tetrahedra or may reflect undetected disorder in Ba3Yb2Zn5O11

    Connectivity-Dependent Conductance of 2,2′-Bipyridine-Based Metal Complexes

    The present work provides an insight into the effect of connectivity isomerization of metal-2,2′-bipyridine complexes. For that purpose, two new 2,2′-bipyridine (bpy) ligand systems, 4,4′-bis­(4-(methylthio)­phenyl)-2,2′-bipyridine (Lmeta) and 5,5′-bis­(3,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzothiophen-5-yl)-2,2′-bipyridine (Lpara) were synthesized and coordinated to rhenium and manganese to obtain the corresponding complexes MnLmeta(CO)3Br, ReLmeta(CO)3Br, MnLpara(CO)3Br, MoLpara(CO)4 and ReLpara(CO)3Br. The experimental and theoretical results revealed that coordination to the para system, i.e., the metal ion peripheral to the conductance path, gave a slightly increased conductance compared to the free ligand attributed to the reduced highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)–least unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) gap. The meta-based system formed a destructive quantum interference feature that reduced the conductance of a S···S contacted junction to below 10–5.5 G o, reinforcing the importance of contact group connectivity for molecular wire conductance

    Does therapeutic writing help people with long-term conditions? Systematic review, realist synthesis and economic considerations

    Background Writing therapy to improve physical or mental health can take many forms. The most researched model of therapeutic writing (TW) is unfacilitated, individual expressive writing (written emotional disclosure). Facilitated writing activities are less widely researched. Data sources Databases including: MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsychINFO, Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts, AMED, and CINHAL were searched from inception to March 2013. Review methods Four TW practitioners provided expert advice. Study procedures were conducted by one reviewer and checked by a second. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and non-randomised comparative studies were included. Quality was appraised using the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Unfacilitated and facilitated TW studies were analysed separately under ICD-10 chapter headings. Meta-analyses were performed where possible using Revman 5.2. Costs were estimated from an NHS perspective and three cost-consequence case studies were prepared. Realist synthesis followed RAMESES guidelines. Objectives To review the clinical and cost-effectiveness of TW for people with long-term health conditions (LTCs) compared to no writing, or other controls, reporting any relevant clinical outcomes. To conduct a realist synthesis to understand how TW might work, and for whom. Results From 14,658 unique citations, 284 full text papers were reviewed and 64 studies (58 RCTs) were included in the final effectiveness reviews. Five studies examined facilitated TW, these were extremely heterogeneous with unclear or high risk of bias, but suggested that facilitated TW interventions may be beneficial in individual LTCs. Unfacilitated expressive writing was examined in 59 studies of variable, or unreported, quality. Overall there was very little or no evidence of any benefit reported in the following conditions (number of studies): HIV (six); breast cancer (eight); gynaecological and genitourinary cancers (five); mental health (five); asthma (four); psoriasis (three); chronic pain (four). In inflammatory arthropathies (six) there was a reduction in disease severity (n= 191, standardised mean difference (SMD) - 0.61 [95% confidence intervals (95% CI) -0.96, -0.26]) in the short term on meta-analysis of four studies. For all other LTCs there was either no, or sparse, data with no, or inconsistent, evidence of benefit. Meta-analyses conducted across all the LTCs provided no evidence that unfacilitated EW had any effect on depression at short term (n= 1,563, SMD -0.06, 95% CI -0.29 to 0.17, substantial heterogeneity), or long term (n= 778, SMD-0.04 95% CI -0.18 to 0.10, little heterogeneity) follow up, or on anxiety, physiological or biomarker-based outcomes. One study reported costs, none reported cost-effectiveness, twelve reported resource use; meta-analysis suggested reduced medication use but no impact on health centre visits. Estimated costs of intervention were low, but there was insufficient evidence to judge cost-effectiveness. Realist review findings suggested that facilitated TW is a complex intervention and group interaction contributes to the perception of benefit. It was unclear from the available data who might benefit most from facilitated TW. Limitations Difficulties with developing realist review programme theory meant that mechanisms operating during TW remain obscure. Conclusions Overall there is little evidence to support the effectiveness or cost-effectiveness of unfacilitated expressive writing interventions in people with LTCs. Further research focussed on facilitated TW in people with LTCs could be informative.The National Institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment programme

    Who should be prioritized for renal transplantation?: Analysis of key stakeholder preferences using discrete choice experiments

    Background Policies for allocating deceased donor kidneys have recently shifted from allocation based on Human Leucocyte Antigen (HLA) tissue matching in the UK and USA. Newer allocation algorithms incorporate waiting time as a primary factor, and in the UK, young adults are also favoured. However, there is little contemporary UK research on the views of stakeholders in the transplant process to inform future allocation policy. This research project aimed to address this issue. Methods Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE) questionnaires were used to establish priorities for kidney transplantation among different stakeholder groups in the UK. Questionnaires were targeted at patients, carers, donors / relatives of deceased donors, and healthcare professionals. Attributes considered included: waiting time; donor-recipient HLA match; whether a recipient had dependents; diseases affecting life expectancy; and diseases affecting quality of life. Results Responses were obtained from 908 patients (including 98 ethnic minorities); 41 carers; 48 donors / relatives of deceased donors; and 113 healthcare professionals. The patient group demonstrated statistically different preferences for every attribute (i.e. significantly different from zero) so implying that changes in given attributes affected preferences, except when prioritizing those with no rather than moderate diseases affecting quality of life. The attributes valued highly related to waiting time, tissue match, prioritizing those with dependents, and prioritizing those with moderate rather than severe diseases affecting life expectancy. Some preferences differed between healthcare professionals and patients, and ethnic minority and non-ethnic minority patients. Only non-ethnic minority patients and healthcare professionals clearly prioritized those with better tissue matches. Conclusions Our econometric results are broadly supportive of the 2006 shift in UK transplant policy which emphasized prioritizing the young and long waiters. However, our findings suggest the need for a further review in the light of observed differences in preferences amongst ethnic minorities, and also because those with dependents may be a further priority.</p

    Bordetella pertussis expresses a functional type III secretion system that subverts protective innate and adaptive immune responses

    Certain bacteria use a type III secretion system (TTSS) to deliver effector proteins that interfere with cell function into host cells. While transcription of genes encoding TTSS components has been demonstrated, studies to date have failed to identify TTSS effector proteins in Bordetella pertussis. Here we present the first evidence of a functionally active TTSS in B. pertussis. Three known TTSS effectors, Bsp22, BopN, and BopD, were identified as TTSS substrates in B. pertussis 12743. We found expression of Bsp22 in a significant proportion of clinical isolates but not in common laboratory-adapted strains of B. pertussis. We generated a TTSS mutant of B. pertussis 12743 and showed that it induced significantly lower respiratory tract colonization in mice than the wild-type bacteria. Respiratory infection of mice with the mutant bacteria induced significantly greater innate proinflammatory cytokine production in the lungs soon after challenge, and this correlated with significantly higher antigen-specific interleukin-17, gamma interferon, and immunoglobulin G responses later in infection. Our findings suggest that the TTSS subverts innate and adaptive immune responses during infection of the lungs and may be a functionally important virulence factor for B. pertussis infection of humans.Instituto de Biotecnologia y Biologia Molecula
