Effects of pre- and post-operative resistance exercise interventions on recovery of physical function in patients undergoing abdominal surgery for cancer: A systematic review of randomised controlled trials

Objective: To systematically review the effects of pre- and post-operative resistance exercise training on the recovery of physical function in patients undergoing abdominal surgery for cancer. Data sources: A systematic review of English articles using Medline, PEDro, Cinahl and The Cochrane Library electronic databases was undertaken. Eligibility criteria for selecting studies: Studies were included if they used a randomised, quasi-randomised, or controlled trial study design and compared the effects of a muscle-strengthening exercise intervention (+/- other therapy) with a comparative non-exercise group; involved adult participants (≥18 years) who had elected to undergo abdominal surgery for cancer; and used muscle strength, physical function, self-reported functional ability, range of motion and/or a performance-based test as an outcome measure. Results: Following screening of titles and abstracts of the 588 publications retrieved from the initial search, 24 studies met the inclusion criteria and were accessed for review of the full-text version of the article and 2 eligible met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. One exercise programme was undertaken pre-operatively and the other post-operatively, until discharge from hospital. There were no differences between groups in either study. Conclusion: The only two studies designed to determine whether pre- or post-operative resistance muscle-strengthening exercise programmes improved or negatively affected physical function outcomes in patients undergoing abdominal surgery for cancer provide inconclusive results. The exercise interventions of the included studies were performed for 5 and 8 session respectively

Evolving collective structures in the transitional nuclei W-162 and W-164

Excited states in the neutron-deficient nuclides W8874162 and W9074164 were investigated by using the γ-ray spectrometer Jurogam. A change in structure is apparent from the first rotational alignments in W162 and W164, whose rotationally aligned bands are interpreted as ν(h9/2)2 and ν(i13/2)2 configurations, respectively. The level schemes have been extended using recoil (-decay) correlations with the observation of excited collective structures. Configuration assignments have been made on the basis of comparisons of the deduced aligned angular momentum, as a function of rotational frequency, with the predictions of the cranked shell model

Sibling relationships and family functioning in siblings of early adolescents, adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder

The purpose of the study was to investigate how family functioning (defined as the ability that family members hold to manage stressful events, and intimate and social relationships), the degree to which family members feel happy and fulfilled with each other (called family satisfaction), and the demographical characteristics of siblings (age and gender) impacted on sibling relationships. The Circumplex Model of Marital and Family Systems and Behavioral Systems constituted the theoretical frameworks that guided our study. Eighty-six typically developing adolescents and young adults having a sister or a brother with autism spectrum disorder were enrolled. Results indicated that the youngest age group (early adolescents) reported to engage more frequently in negative behaviors with their siblings with ASD than the two older age groups (middle adolescents and young adults). No significant differences were found among the three age groups regarding behaviors derived from attachment, caregiving and affiliative systems. Family satisfaction and age significantly predicted behaviors during sibling interactions. Suggestions on prevention and intervention programs were discussed in order to prevent parentification among typically developing siblings and decrease episodes of quarrels and overt conflicts between brothers and sisters with and without AS
